Laxaþjóð | A Salmon Nation

Our relationship with nature not only defines our history, it shapes our future, too. Yet beneath the surface of Iceland’s fjords, an industrial fish farming method threatens to destroy one of Europe’s last remaining wildernesses. Laxaþjóð | A Salmon Nation tells the story of a country united by its lands and waters, and the power of a community to protect the wild places and animals that helped forge its identity.

Join the Community-Energy Movement

To build a resilient energy future, we need to work together.

Europe’s Energy Transformation is Happening Now

The tools and framework for community energy already exist in many countries throughout Europe. Now, citizens must mobilize to make community-owned renewable power an even bigger reality. All it takes is our involvement and willingness to act for a cleaner, more equitable energy future.

Join an energy community. Invest in one. Or build your own.

Stories of Community Energy

Hammarby Sjöstad 2.0

It started as an old port and industrial area, but today 25,000 people are living in the transformed Hammarby Sjöstad district in Stockholm, Sweden. The citizens' initiative ElectriCity, which runs the Hammarby Sjöstad 2.0 project, wants the district to be climate neutral by 2030. To get there, they’ve launched a pilot project to invest in local renewable energy that’s stored and shared through citizen-owned microgrids.

It’s in Our Hands

From political activist to engineer, community organizer, financial supporter and so many more—the roles within the community-energy movement are endless. Here are a few you can take on to make the biggest impact.

Join an Energy Community

Becoming a member of your local energy community is an action that’s critical to the health of the European citizen-owned power movement. Within the EU there are already 1,500 established energy cooperatives, and the network is growing.

Invest in Community Energy

Becoming a member of an energy community is the best way to invest your money in a citizen-owned power future. But if you can’t join a cooperative, you can still financially support the movement.

Build Your Own Energy Community

REscoop.eu and Friends of the Earth have put together a handy little booklet that serves up plans and exact steps for starting your own community-energy project.

Or find your region to learn about establishing a new cooperative in your area.
