Laxaþjóð | A Salmon Nation

Our relationship with nature not only defines our history, it shapes our future, too. Yet beneath the surface of Iceland’s fjords, an industrial fish farming method threatens to destroy one of Europe’s last remaining wildernesses. Laxaþjóð | A Salmon Nation tells the story of a country united by its lands and waters, and the power of a community to protect the wild places and animals that helped forge its identity.

A Net Plus

This is the story of how Bureo locked arms with Patagonia to keep 71,000 pounds of discarded fishing net waste out of the ocean each year by putting it into our hat brims. Introducing the traceable, 100% recycled NetPlus®.

2020 / 8 Min

Discarded fishing nets are one of the most harmful forms of plastic pollution. That’s why we’ve been supporting Bureo in the development of NetPlus®, the traceable, 100% recycled plastic material used for the brim stiffeners in our hats. It’s made from damaged nets collected in fishing communities in Chile and Argentina—a project that benefits fishermen by helping supplement their income, and benefits our planet by repurposing 71,000 pounds of waste per year. This is the story of how Bureo locked arms with Patagonia to create a new solution to our oceans’ overwhelming plastic pollution problem. This is just the first step in Bureo’s fight against ocean plastics that harm marine life and break down the food chain.
