Laxaþjóð | A Salmon Nation

Our relationship with nature not only defines our history, it shapes our future, too. Yet beneath the surface of Iceland’s fjords, an industrial fish farming method threatens to destroy one of Europe’s last remaining wildernesses. Laxaþjóð | A Salmon Nation tells the story of a country united by its lands and waters, and the power of a community to protect the wild places and animals that helped forge its identity.

Community Energy in Germany

What if every building in your village had solar panels? What if citizens owned the power grid? What if we could start an energy transformation? You don’t have to imagine anymore. This could be our reality in Germany.

Community Energy Has a Long History in Germany

Several rural areas in Germany had energy cooperatives as far back as the late 1800s—so, we’ve pioneered in this sector before. But the development of large-scale coal, oil and nuclear operations, in addition to recent regulations, has slowed the growth of citizen-owned energy. It is now up to us, the citizens, to restore community power.

Join an energy community. Invest in one. Or build your own.

Stories of Community Energy

Kohle-Michl

Michael Schabl, known as "Kohle-Michl", is the campaign manager for Raus aus der Steinkohle (Get Out of Hard Coal). In 2017, he led the citizens' petition to shut down a coal-fired Stadtwerke München power plant in Unterföhring. He now produces electricity with solar panels on the roof of his barn in Riedenberg, which he shares with his energy community.

BürgerEnergie Berlin

What if the citizens of Germany's largest city controlled their own power grid? BürgerEnergie Berlin (BEB) is a cooperative fighting for control of the grid to ensure a more equitable energy system in the capital. In 2020 they scored a win when the current owner, Vattenfall, agreed to sell back grid rights to Berlin. Now, BEB is campaigning to secure cooperative access during the next call for tenders. They are also helping rental tenants with solar-energy community projects and partnering up with ElektrizitätsWerke Schönau (EWS) to provide citizen-controlled electricity for all Berliners.

ElektrizitätsWerke Schönau (EWS)

After the 1986 Chernobyl explosion, Schönau im Schwarzwald, a small town in the south of Germany near the border of France and Switzerland, mobilized. The town formed the energy cooperative, ElektrizitätsWerke Schönau (EWS), and committed to replacing nuclear energy with safer and cleaner alternatives. EWS, which is run by mothers, teachers, doctors and other determined citizens, is now in full control of their power supply and has partners all over Germany.
