Laxaþjóð | A Salmon Nation

Our relationship with nature not only defines our history, it shapes our future, too. Yet beneath the surface of Iceland’s fjords, an industrial fish farming method threatens to destroy one of Europe’s last remaining wildernesses. Laxaþjóð | A Salmon Nation tells the story of a country united by its lands and waters, and the power of a community to protect the wild places and animals that helped forge its identity.

Community Energy in Switzerland

By supporting local energy communities in Switzerland, you can benefit from clean, affordable power and expand our country’s solar-energy capacity.

Here Comes the Sun

More than half of the 9.6 million roofs in Switzerland could be used for solar panels. This would help us meet over 40 percent of our annual electricity demand.

When citizens get together in energy communities to own and produce power themselves, the financial benefits stay local. It also helps shift our power supply to one of the least damaging forms of energy for our planet—solar.

Support the development of solar energy in Switzerland today.

Stories of Community Energy

Mission Possible in Grimentz

The citizens of Grimentz, in the Val d'Anniviers, are contributing toward transforming their energy system by putting solar panels on top of a municipality building, while still maintaining the heritage of this small town in the Alps. The energy will be used to charge the electric cars that park at the resort nearby.

The Energy Enabler

Diego Fischer is a self-proclaimed “energy transformation enabler” who started Coopsol and Diego Fischer Solar and Engineering. His work began in 2015 with the city of Neuchâtel, and by the end of September 2016, he had raised 150,000 Swiss francs and started Coopsol with 100 members. Today, they have 340 solar panels (which is equivalent to the solar-panel capacity of about 30 households) and 192 members.

Stade de Genève

La Fondation du Stade de Genève and Services Industriels de Genève (SIG) built a 5,000m2 solar-power plant on the roof of the Stade de Genève, the local stadium in Geneva. It produces enough energy to power 367 houses in the city. Currently, 30 percent of the power produced is being used by the stadium, while the other 70 percent is sold to Geneva residents.

SIG launched Mon m2 solaire, which offers Geneva residents shares in the Stade de Genève solar-energy project. Over 6,000 shares have been purchased for the price of 330 Swiss francs a year, which provides members with 100kWh of electricity per share for 20 years. (That’s enough energy to recharge an electric bike 300 times!)

Get Involved

Together, we can restore power to the people and bring the benefits of clean energy home.

Join or Invest in Community Energy

The community-energy movement in Switzerland is just beginning to develop. Becoming a member of an energy community is the best way to invest your money in a citizen-led power future, but there are funding opportunities outside of a membership.

Build Your Own Energy Community

If you’re interested in starting your own energy community and can’t find a project in your area, you can get advice from others who have done it so you can set up your own. There are many organisations and people in Switzerland who specialize in establishing community-energy projects.

Become a member of the Swiss Association for Citizen Energy

By becoming a member, you will support an association that is not only concerned with the development of renewable energies, but also works on energy efficiency and energy sobriety solutions, because the best energy for the climate is the one we do not use.
