One step closer
to Vjosa National Park
Albanian government partners with Patagonia to create the world's first wild river national park.
Albanian government signs commitment to partner with Patagonia, creating Europe's first wild river national park.
In a public ceremony, the Albanian government committed to work together with a team of experts, including EcoAlbania, Riverwatch, Euronatur and others from the Save the Blue Heart campaign, to protect the Vjosa forever.
The Vjosa River and its tributaries run untamed from source to sea, creating a biodiverse ecosystem that covers over 300km. This ecosystem is home to 1,100 species of animals, including 13 globally threatened animal and two plant species. This wild and untamed area is an impressive mosaic of different habitat types, including some that have the highest level of conservation importance in Europe.
