Goodbye at last, merino Long Johns

These replaced my old Pata merino wool long underwear. I resisted for a long time because of the way some synthetics can feel, but they nailed it with these. Super comfy on the skin. Loose enough that I can climb or ski in them without relying on the fabric stretch entirely, but tight enough that they slip on under outer layers without issue. I als... So so much more than a base layer!

These are deceptively warm under my lightweight, no-insulation snowboard pants. Coupling these with a lighter ski/riding pant seems to make for a less bulky, better functioning pant on the coldest of Vermont-cold days. This thermal layer is absolutely a much warmer layer than the Capilene mid weight, making it much more than just a base layer. So g... Read Morelad to add these to my quiver!

Great long Johns

Some of the reviews on here report an odd fit, which they definitely have. They are kinda bagging leggings with a secure waistband. I have furry tree trunk legs so that was awesome for me! I wear 35waist and usually need a relaxed/athletic cut pant or a stretch material slim cut - so These fit me perfectly. I could see how if you have little baby c... Read Morehicken legs you would probably want to shop down a size or hit the gym. Yeah idk if people want long Johns to fit like strink wrap tubing around your downstairs mix-up but I hate being suffocated by sweatpants and thermals when skiing or running so these are probably the best baselayer bottoms Ive ever owned bc fit. They seem so thin and light but are stupid warm. For resort skiing in Montana above 10F I would just wear these plus my bibs and I dont notice my legs at all.

I like the long Johns

I like the long Johns overall the waist fits me well (I wear a 32). I like the fabric but if Patagonia offered something a little heavier I would buy it. My main feed back is the legs are a little baggy at least in part because the are longer than other l.J.s I own . This is mainly an issue when pairing them with work pants, just too much fabric. ... Great material!

Love this material - it is light and breathable but very warm. I have big legs and it is tough to find slimmer garments that fit me decently. The calves are a bit tight and pulling them up above my ski boots is a bit uncomfortable so I would prefer a bit wider fit in the calf area. Very pleased with my purchase!

I bought these for additional

I bought these for additional warmth while skiing. Unfortunately, the ankle cuffs are very large, untapered, and without elastic. This would require folding the excess material around the lower leg which is intolerable in well fitting ski boots. They would likely work well for all other applications and seemed well made otherwise.

Go-to thermals

I have three pair of these. They're basic thermals that I layer if I need more warmth that one pair provides. I'm 6'1, slim, and long-limbed, and these fit me well for length and waist. High quality

Like everything Patagonia makes, these are high-quality thermal bottoms. Comfortable and warm. My only criticism is that the inner fly piece is too small, fly opens too easily, still very functional though

December 28, 2022

Warm as ever when skiing.

These base layer are fantastic. They have what I would call a waffle weave which makes them super comfortable. They are thinner than expected but super warm.

Super light and not restrictive

Super light and not restrictive of movement, but surprisingly warm in spite of being essentially weightless.

Super Comfortable

Little baggy in the fit, which is nice for ski touring. Makes an awesome below the bibs layer for 20-35f temperatures. Breathes well, fairly warm. I catch myself not thinking about them all day, which is usually a sign of great gear to me!

Say Goodbye to Cold Legs

I bought this specifically for the cold, wet and windy Cape Town winters when you gotta be outside but don't want your legs to freeze. I'd wear this under a pair of jeans and they were brilliant. Warm but restrictive

I have other base layers that are much less restrictive. This garment is bulky and the waist band is too thick and tight. To make them work, you must have oversized outer wear for comfort and freedom of movement. Not exactly what I was expecting.

Warm, comfy, lacking in durability, big floppy ankles

Was taking a trip to Ecuador to climb some Andean peaks, including Chimborazo, the closest you can get to the sun on Earth. I tried half a dozen different baselayer before settling on these. I have only worn them once, for about ten hours, and they are already showing more wear and tear than other baselayers I have had for a decade or more. No other baselayer has shown this much wear and tear, even when worn with the same shells. Doesn't bode well for long term lifespan. -Loose ankles**. This is totally a preference thing. There are two groups or opinions here. One group of people like loose ankles, and they pull the ankles up to their calves to keep them out of their ski boots or mountaineering boots, which causes bunching of fabric up around the calf. The other group of people likes snug tight fitting ankles that go inside the boot(s). Being snug prevents folds, wrinkles, and pressure points. I am in the latter group. So while SOME people may appreciate the loose floppy ankles with tons of extra fabric, I don't. I'd definitely want them more snug. Think about which group you belong to. All things considered, would not buy again, not even at half price. Maybe if I could get them at 70% off or more, but even at 50% off, they're not worth it. I have a 31" waist and inseam, and the small fit well (except the big baggy ankles...)

Odd fit

As others have noted, the fit is odd, with a tight waist but somewhat baggy legs. I bought one size smaller than my usual, and it mostly worked OK. The material is lighter and thinner than I expected, but it performed well on a rafting trip where I wore it nonstop. All in all, a good product.

Returned Them

I was expecting something different than what these were. These long underwear were what I would call light weight. I was looking for something much thicker for extreme weather. You can see right through the material. I returned them.

July 15, 2022

8% spandex! fail

Stop putting spandex in these!! You don't need the stretch, obviously, since the mid-weights are 100% poly. Spandex isn't breathable and has high moisture absorption .... pretty much the worst combo for long underwear. Come on, y'all should know better than this.

Time Will Tell

I bought these in XS (my usual size) when my twenty year old red expedition weight couldn't hold up to one more waistband replacement. Not Quite Right

Bought these for the light weight fabric to help out with my ultralight backpacking kit. Love the fabric weight(5.7oz for the mediums) and comfort but the crotch and ankles are just too loose. An essential winter hiking layer, or casual winter layering piece.

I just bought my second pair of these. My first pair is still going strong after 4 years, but I decided to double up after finding a second pair on sale. January 15, 2021

love the fabric but needs some tweaks to be perfect

I love this fabric. The fit is truly odd though. First of all the length is about 2 inches longer than I expected. For me that is not a big deal, I actually like pulling it down over my feet when im cold-kickin it. The real peculiarities lie in the crotch and waist area. For one the front flap doesn't overlap; there is basically just a hole ... Read Morethere which is annoying. If I dont wear underwear my junk will just find its way out between the flaps. Secondly there is enough space to fit like 4 pairs of buttcheeks in the torso portion. I can pull the waist bad up to my nipples. its just a very weird combination of form fitting and baggy. I use them to wear over smartwool leggings that fit my body effortlessly. otherwise in order for them to fit as a standalone piece I roll the waist down 2 cuffs and the leg openings up one big cuff. Also the tags are so annoying and in order to return/warranty them you are supposed to keep the STY portion which just happens to be at the bottom of a tag that feels like it is long enough to be tucked in your socks. I still love them strangely enough and I wear them every day (seriously) the fabric and lofting is so amazing that I can deal with the absurd fit. PS the tops fit perfect. Dont change those please.

At 5'7 & 138lbs and an avid cyclist, these fit well in the seat and thighs, but are ~4" too long and too large a diameter in the lower cafe. They tend to bunch up in the ski boot.

Expedition Weight Capilene Seekers

I've seen quite a few reviews on hear discussing the current Thermal Weight Capilene not being as warm as their predecessor the Expedition Weight Capilene. I believe the current iteration is meant to strike the balance between warmth and breath-ability. However, if you find yourself wanting the warmth of the Expedition weight I would suggest t... Read Moreaking a look at the Men's Crosstrek Fleece Bottoms. They are made from the exact same material as the old Expedition Weight (Polartec Power Stretch). They may not be as tight as other baselayers but aren't too much of a compromise. If you are looking for breath-ability and overall versatility these are perfect. Hope this helps!

Capilene thermal bottoms-mens

I haven't used them hiking yet but wore them around the house on a cold evening. They feel very comfy and as warm as expected. They fit well; I'm 5'5" and got a small. Unfortunately, the listed weight was way off; very much misadvertising. They are listed at 4.7oz for a medium and i was told 4.3oz for a small. My small weighs 6.... Read More4oz, about 50% more then the listed weight. As someone trying to lighten their pack with an efficient clothing system, this was very disappointing and has me reconsidering patagonia for other lightweight options like rain jacket. Unfortunately i had worn it around for a couple hours and ripped the tags off before weighing it.

Lightweight and packable,not very warm

I purchased these a month ago. They feel nice and are easy to pack. However, they are not warm. They aren't as warm as my older edition Capilene Midweight bottoms. They aren't as warm as some older, cheaper bottoms I have. If you're looking to save ounces, they're great. If you want to stay warm,go with something else.

Great product

Tested in AK in -44 Degrees F and it was perfect as the base layer of multi-layer system. Love this long underwear!

I'm a long-time fan and customer of all things Patagonia. Very good products for the things I like to do. I also like your support on protecting the environment.

Long Johns

I am a Skier and Fly Fisher, needed a medium weight and heavy weight Long Johns. Couldn't be happier with the Patagonia line. Always top quality, love the companies Environmental stand, and the overall comfort is yet to be matched.

Very Warm

I wore these up to Squaw in February and they kept me very warm and dry. A good fit, true to size.

Ribbed.

One could argue these pants are in the gradation between the mid-weight bottoms and a pair of fleece pants, but for me this is not entirely the case, read on. These thermals are ribbed with a 1/2 inch wide horizontal band of insulation and then just the thin carcass material for the the next 1/2 inch. Which in a 3 layer set up below a pair of fleece ... Read Morepants, with the wind and water resistant outer layer, would make the over all set up slightly lighter weight/less bulky but equally as warm, compared to a not ribbed full insulation design. I intended to use these in a 2 layer set up below a pair of rain pants that are not air tight at the ankle, this setup allows a little cold wind up the ankle, which would be of no consequence,if your bottom layer had a full insulation design. Zoom in really close on the web pictures, and you can see what I mean.

The fit in the legs is extremely disappointing.

The legs would fit someone weighing 100 pounds more than my 185. The legs are cut so different and huge than the same exact item in MIDWEIGHT. Compare the specs yourself.

A bit disappointed

Bought these thermal weight bottoms believing they would a good replacement for my 10+ year old thermal weight bottom. They are not nearly as warm of comfortable as the original fleece type offering. I am not saying that they are not useful or well made, but they require heavier shell insulation to achieve the same overall warmth and they just don&#... Read Morex27;t give the same instant comfort of the expedition fleece. They are fine if you know what you are getting, but definitely not an equal replacement for the great expedition weight Patagonia classics.

Love these!

These are great and are a perfect weight for wearing under my shell while backcountry skiing. I got them just before Christmas and I just returned from a hut trip to Canada where we had a week of cold temps (high temps of -20 C on several days). These did a good job of both keeping me warm and also breathing enough so I didn't get too sweaty. ... a layer of comfort

best long underwear ever... low bulk and super warm with a low profile waistband that makes for a comfortable fit under every layer i have. awesome.

January 11, 2017

Awesome base layer!

Love the new fabric style. Very warm for the weight and moves with my legs better than the older version.

Versatile

These baselayer bottoms work great in a variety of conditions. I wore them under lightweight hiking pants with temps in the 40s and was not cold while on the trail. They also work well to layer under jeans for walking around town in the winter, and even inside with jeans they don't feel too hot. I love that I can leave them on all day, whether I... I tried on the merino thermal weight bottoms to compare and these were a looser fit (more comfortable for me),whereas the merino bottoms were more like tights.
