This product has just about everything I need. It dries very fast, the fabric is very soft, and the inner lining has a good length to it to prevent rubbing. I love that the pockets zip completely to prevent items from falling out during exercise. My only wish would be to make the front pockets slightly larger (or at least one of them) so that my ph... Read Moreone can fit better. With the current pocket size and a 6.1" phone with a slim case, it barely fits into the pocket. If you had a larger sized phone or thicker case it would be very difficult to get in and out of the pocket and nearly impossible to zip up.
Otherwise, steller product!
We're glad to hear the shorts are working well for you overall! As these were designed for trail running, you might prefer to carry your phone in an arm band, hip bag or running vest. Alternatively, you could see if the pockets on our [Multi Trails Shorts](https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-multi-trails-shorts-8-inch/57602.html) are a better fit and contact us if you have any questions or concerns. I like the build in
I like the build in liner quite a bit. It's more of a boxer brief fit than standard briefs. The pockets are a nice addition as well that is often missing from running shorts.
Perfect athletic shorts, the attached full length compression underwear is just as comfortable as any standalone underwear. Good length, don't get turned away by the 8in inseam. they are not too long
Im 205lbs athletic. Love these shorts. The built in boxer briefs fit perfectly snug will the fabric lets you breath. The length and fit are all perfect and the best part is the zipper pockets!!
I love these shorts. Use them for working out and running. The liner is very comfortable. I originally ordered size Large, which I wear in all other brands. Patagonia's was too small. Patagonia made it easy to exchange. The XL is perfect.
I have used for running the past month. Love the pockets and fit. The boxer briefs liner is comfortable and great support as underwear. Highly recommend and will purchase more in the future.
Don't get me wrong, these shorts are decent. They're almost bathing suit quality and will probably be used for that.
I bought two pair. The lining kinda rides up and can feel like it bunches up. Im a large and wear large with most other shorts and pants. These feel a bit tight- so much so that I though about getting then in XL.

Great shorts for being active. Comfortable, durable, quick drying, and easy moving. I bought 1 pair for recent hiking and trail running excursions and liked them so much I bought another pair.
Bought these running shorts as I started to build up my mileage, love the comfort and fit, length prevents chafing. The pockets are well placed and holds just the essentials. Quite surprised at the versatility, back them on trip and used them for swimming and climbing. Quite durable and dries quickly!
I first got size M which was supposed to match my waist size, but exchanged it for L which fits.
I somehow missed that these pants have a lining, and am pleasantly surprised by its comfort and functionality. The pockets are made well and the fabric is very serviceable.
My wife loves the color and pattern as well.
Title basically, i love the shorts but i have a longer legs so i wish theyd make a 9 or 10 inch inseam in this style but otherwise great shorts, dont even need underwear lol
Bought a pair from REI, made me want to come by two more pairs from Patagonia. Shorts that are truly good for everything from swimming to hiking. Would go so far as to call it a Swiss Army knife for shorts.
So I own 7 pair of these nine trail shorts. Love em, use them for gym and hiking. But the pair I just order stays wrinkled all the time unlike my others. The material seems thinner/ softer. I had to actually iron these shorts with starch to get the wrinkles out. I already own a pair of the gray. The same color I just ordered on sale. I like the gra... Read Morey so I figured Ill buy another of the same color to have. So comparing the two side by side you can tell the difference in the material and color. Unfortunate because I think these are the best active short Ive ever owned. I Hope Patagonia is not trying to save money by using cheaper materials because the price point is still the same for the consumer.
Love the everything about these shorts from the brief liner to the zipper pockets. I took the advice of some of the other reviews and bought a size larger than my baggie shorts and it worked out great. 10 out of 10, would recommend.
The best running / active shorts I've found yet. Incredibly good fit, very breathable, and the zipper pockets and liner make it perfect for things not bouncing out of pockets and keeping your loins not sweaty when exerting yourself.
I'm 6'0" 170lbs. Medium is great. This is my second pair of the 9 trails. They're useful for everything. I love the zipper pocket for hikes to ensure things don't fall out of my pockets. These shorts are light and comfortable. The liner is comfortable and supportive. I I am not sure I like how the material hangs off the thighs. Seems like excess material, but it does give your legs more freedom on those reaching climbs.
Love the short liner, print, and material. I had these shorts several years ago and the drawstrings were too short to tie a good knot. Great to see the new version has longer drawstring. One wish: wish the back pocket was big enough for a phone or there was a centered pocket for more balanced running.
I love the Nine Trails running shorts because they have a full boxer brief liner rather than a traditional running short liner. I haven't put these through the miles yet, but my only concern is that the liner is much lighter weight than the previous edition. Favorite trail running shorts
These are my favorite pair of trail shorts, so much so that I now have 4 of them! The boxer brief liner is very comfortable and doesn't ride up. The zipper pockets make them great for causal use too, as it is easy to store keys and a phone.
The best features of these shorts are- they are true to size, light , has nice inner compression . Look good and well made. First time owning Patagonia shorts. I will be a repeat customer for sure of this great brand!
I just bought my 3rd pair to take with me on another long travel trip. I absolutely love these shorts. They have zipper pockets, packs small, lightweight, quick drying, nicely fitted. These are my shorts that I go to for traveling and even for the gym.
These shorts check all the boxes. Light weight, stylish and perfect pockets. The rear pocket is the perfect size to store your phone when running without bouncing around. Loved these shorts so much I bought a pair for my running buddy for Christmas last year.
Best liner , best pockets, best versatility, most comfortable , 100% worth the price. I have 3 pairs and buying more. The 2 older pairs look as good as the day I bought them 4 years ago. You seriously cannot kill these shorts. Believe me I have tried. Just buy em.
My go to running shorts with temperatures 40 degrees F and up. There is an inner liner . Pockets are useful without being obtrusive. Good for training and trail runs. Not a racing short. Easily doubles as a swim suit.
I really like the material and feel of the shorts. They are light and breathe well for intense outdoor activity. They do seem to run slightly larger than I imagined so you may go with a large if you between a L or XL size.
Bought my first pair for trail runs but now have 4 pairs that I wear everywhere. The 3 zip pockets make them great travel shorts. The fit and length make them great at kids soccer games. And of course I run in them all the time.
The fit of these shorts was very strange for me. I happily wear a medium in the excellent Terrebonne shorts. These shorts had an odd baggy fit between the hip bones and waist band and the rise from crotch to navel was short so I had to return them.
These are the perfect running shorts. Light, breathable, and comfortable. I have a few pairs and use them train running, hiking, bouldering in the gym. Perfect for and athletic occasion!
The shorts feel and look amazing, they feel slightly too tight in the crotch area, but nothing too bad. My biggest gripe is the drawstring is incredibly thin and has no elasticity to it which means it barely holds a tie, so the fear of these falling is a definite down side. Other than that great pair of shorts look and material is amazing.
I cant say enough good things about these shorts; the fit, the materials, breathability, comfort, and security of having zippered shorts on the trail. These are my favorites to run in and I've been at it for over 30 years; marathons, IronMan, Ultras, you name it. Its just validation that they got it right with these. I've worn lots of oth... Read Moreer brands from major running companies too. Very light and the under liner is supportive without being restrictive and doesn't bunch up.
Sized up to large as the last pair were medium and were too tight in the thighs and waist. Dry quickly and have plenty of secure pockets. The length isnt too short or too long. My favorite pair of shorts to trail run and casually lounge.
I love this short. I bought a pair several years ago. The zip up pockets are ideal for storing during OCR's or long training runs. After a great deal of wear and tear I decided I should replace them. They ran a little larger for the same size than previous purchase.
I really love these shorts for a few reasons. First, they have a nice liner that fits me just right and is comfortable. Second, the shorts look nice so I can wear them running, hiking, or even doing errands around town. Third, these shorts are light, they dry quickly, and the zippered pockets are useful for me. Five stars!
Most expensive running shirts I have bought, but totally worth it. Will buy more next time they are on sale.
The integrated compression shorts are so nice for long runs. Barely know they are there. Pockets are very useful when carrying keys, wallet, etc.
Buy them, you will not regret it.
The fit of these shorts is great. Im 5 nine about 190lbs and the large fit perfect. I love that the drawstring is in the front and easy to tie. Baggy if you have muscular legs
I have muscular legs and am 5 foot 8 inches, so had to get a medium to fit in the shorts, but with my height, these are too baggy looking, and long, so they weren't flattering. Had to return. Was not the fit for me.
Our family loves the nine trails line, though I'd also recommend sizing up. My husband is consistently a large in all Patagonia bottoms, except these which he sizes up to an xl for a roomier, more comfortable fit.
The nine trails running shorts are perfect for any distance run. The zippered pockets are great for car keys or nutrition. The shorts are also perfect for visits to the gym and for my new sport, pickleball!
Ive worn the same shorts for 20 years as an avid runner. These trail 9 shorts have won me over though and Ive recently replaced my entire stock of running shorts with these exclusively. All the quality and worldly commitment youd expect from Patagonia and their products. Excellent choice.
The Nine Trails have been my go-to running shorts for a few years now. The liner is the best I have found in running shorts from any brand so far and the zip pockets are a welcome change from most competing options. Nine Trails Running Shorts are my favorite shorts for both gym and running. They are very comfortable to wear and have lasted surprisingly well with a gym routine that includes a lot of rowing.
These are much more expensive than my last (decathlon) running shorts but the difference in quality and comfort is abundantly clear. Extremely comfortable, light, and free moving.
I love these shorts, they are my go to running/trail short I have bought numerous pairs. The zippered side pockets and back pocket work great. Fabric dries fast and the colors/patterns are original. I cut the brief liner out of them when I get them which gives me more freedom of motion.
The Nine Trails Running Shorts have been my go-to running shorts for years now. The built-in liner is amazing the materials hold up to years of continuous use. It's nice to have a pair of shorts that aren't overly minimalistic, with 3 zippered pockets these shorts work great for backpacking, casual hikes, and long trail runs.

Excellent fit
I have two pairs of these shorts and I love how perfectly they fit. They're not as loose as some shorts, and I appreciate the slimmer fit. The external material is very strong, as I've taken them off trail through scrub oak forests with very little signs of wear and tear.

I know there's some debate about the brief v. boxer brief liner, and I don't have a dog in that fight, because I use and appreciate both. I find these shorts create very little chafing, and the liners distribute moisture quickly.
Bottom line is that these are excellent shorts, and I'll get another pair when these inevitably wear out in a few years.
I'm an ultra runner and I love these shorts:
1. they keep chafing to a minimum

Daily walks or running, gym, hiking, camping, yoga, backpacking. They're easily one of my most worn clothing items. I originally wanted them to be my dedicated hiking/ camping shorts, but they're so incredibly comfortable and so functional I wanted to get more use out of them.
Integrated capilene shorts with super efficient moisture wicking ability (no more need to buy separate compression shorts now), stretch material, and a variety of zipper pockets. These things have been through the ringer. Daily use, rough backcountry exploits (lots of scrapping on rock), and way too many washes.
These shorts still look and feel brand new. Strech band is solid, drawstring is intact, no stitching fraying or coming undone. Just so well made. I recently got a second pair to rotate out, and between these two, I eliminated a need for hiking shorts, hiking compression shorts, gym shorts, and gym compression shorts. Literally halved my apparel. Stoked on that.

During hot weather runs these shorts will dry quickly. The liner is what makes the difference in keeping dry, you wont notice it and it provides good support.

Sizing on this short is tricky.
I need a med waist but there is not enough room thru the butt and thighs.
Would prefer a roomier fit.
Having said that .materials and pocket design are excellent
I found these shorts to be perfect for backpacking on trails. Not too long, very comfy stretchy liner, four zippered pockets, comfortable waistband, nice cord to hold them up. All this, and they weren't stinky after four days of backpacking. Highly recommend over heavier shorts with mesh liners.

Lightweight with plenty of pockets and zippers. What else can I ask for. Not into lined shorts - I'm in the water a lot. I could see these manifesting into a performance surf trunk in the near future. Please!
These are great! I use them for running and the are lightweight and you barely feel them. They still have pockets if you need to secure something while you are running the trails! I will be getting another pair for the rotation!
Love these, for running I mainly use Strider Pro 5" but these are great for more casual use, lighter runs or in gym (for running I prefer light/small shorts hence the 5"). Comfortable and pockets are useful.
Longer than most running shorts, great inside liner that isn't too tight or pinches. Theres a nice give yet supports too. Love the zippered pockets large enough for phones & keys. My new fav running shorts. Only recommendation is making the waistband a bit wider.
Decided to try something different from my regular running shorts and now I will never go back. I have worn for easy morning runs and longer trail runs and love then every time. Comfortable (liner fits perfect with no chafing), the right length and with three zipper pockets when needed. Will be getting more colors.
Wear these shorts for my activities and especially thru-treks in hotter climates. Lightweight, comfortable, stretchable, breathable, and never have to wear underwear again!
I own these shorts in three different varieties - which I adopted from a friend who does the same thing. Have a pair for every occasion!
Love these! Fit is perfect (Medium and I'm 6' and 165lbs). Quality materials that are appropriately snug on inner layer and loose on the actual shorts. zipper pockets are great. Should have purchased more in different colors, but love the light blue I bought.

Looks Great and Feels Great
I love the design of these shorts. They do run a bit small and the draw string on mine is hard to tie because it is not long enough. One spot on the shorts had a thread pull, which was a bummer for as much as these cost.

Really poor quality from patagonia.
Drawstring just isn't up to par for $75 shorts. Thighs are noticeably tight and sizing up to XL makes the waist too loose, which the drawstring won't fix. Perfect running shorts
Not too long, not too short. The built-in liner actually fits, unlike a lot of liners. What really sets these shorts apart is that all three pockets have zippers, so there's no chance of anything flying out.
I initially bought these shorts for running. And I've found them to be perfect. So much so that I wear them any time the temperature allows.

Perfect Running Shorts
I've now enjoyed several pairs of these wonderful shorts and logged many miles. They have become my go-to for training miles as well as races. This m... Read Moreay seem counterintuitive to say in a review, but these shorts are my favorite because when I have them on, I don't have to think about them and can just focus on the run.
These are by far the best running shorts I have ever utilized. I am predominately a recreational runner who does track workouts and weekend long runs routinely. No matter the agenda, these shorts literally kill it, thereby giving me one less thing to concern myself over with my body and gear. The things I am especially thankful for in these are:
- ... Read MoreZipper pockets. You'll never lose any accessories in these. The back pocket fits my iphone SE without it bouncing around. Idk about bigger phones though.
- Moisture wicking. Everything athletic nowadays excels at this feature; but these never get "drenched" per se. I can't say that about most shorts I've worn in the past.
- No chafing. This one is more subjective, obviously. No guarantee that this will apply to everyone, but I think that the briefs underneath do a good job at preventing rubbing, if that's a problem for anyone considering these.
- Not too long, not too short. Their length doesn't hinder their cooling properties. For my height too, they are a perfect fit.
The only issue I have with these, which is a major one, is the drawstrings. If you carry stuff like your phone, or anything else, these will sag unless you tie them tightly. With how dependent the security these shorts rely on them, if they were to break, they become completely obsolete. They are susceptible to getting stuck in one of those accidental "tight rock knots" you occasionally get plighted with if you accidentally untie them improperly. Akin to the way your shoes can get stuck in this frustrating unpickable knot, you end up picking at them for minutes on end with your fingernails to no avail. Long story short, one of these knots occurred with my drawstrings, and it resulted into their fate. I managed to cut into the shorts using some scissors to reattach the broken end, saving their functionality; but maybe for future models, make them a little thicker so that this issue is less likely to occur. I hate having the lifespan of my clothing reduced because of needing to make improvised repairs.
Otherwise, fantastic shorts. I will continue to use them despite their state of disrepair, along with the other 4 pairs that elevate my running experience. :D

Amazing liners
I was surprised by the size of the liner in these shorts, initially thinking that the boxer-brief style would be excessive. Now that I've used them on several long runs, including ones with significant creek crossings, I couldn't be happier! The pockets seemed to be a little small at first, but they hold everything I'd want to put in... Read More them on a run.
The only downside I encountered was that if the drawstring gets tied into a knot, it's challenging to untie!
These shorts are super breathable and are perfect for pretty much any kind of circumstance.
I've worn these at the gym doing squats, deadlifts, and other straining exercises that might rip other lesser quality shorts. I have also worn these on longer distance runs and its risen to every challenge.

I found these shorts to be well designed and well made. I feel like the pocket size is well thought out. I cant feel the car key when I put it in my pocket while Im running. The liner is the right size and the fit is not too lose to flop around or too tight to be restrictive on the trails when running up. Will buy another one for sure. The material... Read More feels great as well.
I just bought my fourth pair. Ive worn running shorts daily from many different brands since I was 12- these are the best Ive ever found.
I base my laundry cycle around these shorts- when I dont have a clean pair to reach for, its time to do a load.
Fresh out of the shower, I throw on a pair of 9 trails and a polo shirt for zoom meetings every ... Read Moreday. After 2 wears, they rotate to yoga, road biking, the climbing gym, to swing my kettlebells, volley ball, etc. i can usually wear them for 2 or 3 active outings before they need a wash.
Only activity they dont participate in is rafting/kayaking/swimming in the river and lounging on rocks- the fabric is not as durable as Baggies. Between these, and baggies, Im wearing Patagonia shorts every day of the summer.
The liner is great, and it means I never run out of underwear in the summer before doing laundry. I will say, the high performance of the liner is a trade off, as they will wear out long before the shorts do- thats fine, Ill cut out the liner and order another pair.
3 Zippered pockets were the main feature that sold me originally. I never lose anything, whether Im running, on a bike, or laying on the couch- everything stays where it needs to.
You wont regret picking up a pair if youre thin, athletic, and like shorts with zippered pockets and a liner.
These are definitely my new favorite running shorts. I typically dont like slash pockets and was skeptical of the liner shorts, but these are awesome. The zippered pockets are handy and the zippers keep the pockets from flaring out. Love the fit and length of the shorts too.
I have a hard time finding good road/trail running shorts that dont chafe my inner thighs. These do the trick and they are comfortable and look cool! Perfect length for me. Im 59, weight 165 and have a 30in inseam.
These shorts are great but the liners are holding them back. The liners wear out much faster than I would expect out of a Patagonia product. These are by far the worst liner I had from Patagonia running short and I have been using this short or its equivalent for more than 15 years.
I was skeptical about these. I've never been a fan of liners in shorts. These are incredibly comfortable though. The liner doesn't ride up at all. If you're on the thicc side, I'd size up. I have a slightly more athletic build and the medium fits, but feels tight getting into, the large feels great
After I read the review of Donald Buraglio on his article ULTRA GEAR 101 published by ULTRARUNNING MAGAZINE from September 2020 I bought one to give a try. It worked very well. I used it for my ultrarunning races and so far, so good.
On April 2022 I bought two Nine Trails shorts. But in this opportunity, something was different. The boxer brief li... Read Morener was perfect. But the exterior panels did not shed the moisture at all. All the body sweat goes down directly to the foot, causing feet and socks to quickly become damp. For ultrarunners this is a problem as it is particularly important to be able to keep your feet dry as much as possible.
I guess that the reason for this change is that they have used another type of fabric for the exterior panels, which is not suitable.
I must clarify that my place of running is in Puerto Rico and temperatures can be between 80 to 90 degrees, which is why you perspire a lot and the humidity that your feet receive is abundant. With this new short, after running for 80 to 90 minutes, the shoes, the socks and the feet are wet.
With the first Nine trail short I bought it is different. Perspiration comes out easily to the outside and thus prevents it from falling to the feet.
We're sorry to hear that these shorts have been a disappointment. The last time that we made any changes to this style was in Spring 2018, so we're not sure what is different from the pair you purchased in 2020. We'll reach out to you privately to find a solution. Thanks for the review Gustavo!

Definitely on the small side...
Love the shorts. the materials are great! The color choices, simple and classic, but man....
The sizing got me. Im a 32 in waist and 5'11...
But the medium was REALLY tight on the interior lining. Im a pretty thin guy but that was a no go. will be returning...and possibly exchanging? word to those interested *Size Up*
What can I say, I virtually live in these very versatile shorts and have for quite awhile now! Of course, most of the time in pretty fair whether. The shorts are great. Really breathable, decent pockets, inseam is great but and I mean one huge but: you can see everything up front in these. Im not sure what it is with Patagonia running shorts, but they seem to be very flat fronted so to speak. Flat fronts are great for women, but its too revealing for men. At least it is for me.
