It's a better sweater jacket
I chose a size XL and sizing is spot-on. I usually downsize to a large on most Patagonia jackets. I'm 6-0. 205#. My chest measurement is about 23-24 inches across. It fits me perfect and it's not a bulky fleece jacket which is what I'm looking for. So far no complaints.

I own 3 patagonia's sweaters and I love them they are the best!!!! Quality speaking cannot be beaten by any brand... With that being said... I purchased this sweater for my son for the second time. He has a long walk across the parking lot into work each day, starting at 6:30 am and it gets mighty cold in Idaho. This is his favorite sweater and I hope you keep it in stock because I will probably want to buy it again! Thank you Patagonia.
Pilling Like Crazy
I love these sweaters but man do they pull. You would think for 155 dollars they would figure out a way to not have this be an issue. Other than that it fits great and looks great. I have 3 of these but the black one seems to be the most noticeable with the pilling.

High quality warmth but cut is small
I have 3 of the Better Sweater style vests. Love them and wanted one with sleeves. As a larger man I do not like pullovers and wanted the zip up. This is my first ever purchase from Patagonia. Very well made, paying attention to minute details. Very happy and satisfied. For sure gonna be a returning customer. So glad I bought it. If you want something casual on a pair of jeans, its a no brainer. Just get it. Thank Patagonia for such a quality product.
Fit is off
I find the fit on these jackets to be way off. It is supposed to be a regular fit not a slim fit. Well its the slimmest regular fit ever. I ordered both a M and a L as I often fit in one or the other. I started with the L and it was too small so I didnt even get the M out of the package. I returned both. Im 59, 185.

Good Looks and Warm
Best looking fleece jacket striking a perfect balance between work and casual situations. I looked through nearly 100 before choosing this one. My body dimensions match size medium dimensions across the size chart. The size medium jacket fits me great which is surprising as I was expecting the waist to be oversized after a previous Patagonia jacket... Read More purchase years back. I heard they adjusted the size of these a bit ago which is good for me considering they don't have an adjustable drawcord hem. The size would allow for a shirt and mid-warmth sweater to be layered underneath. The chest pocket fits a phone, hand pockets are warm. Jacket overall is warm but I wear polos to work so I'd prefer it to be a bit warmer and more wind resistant with perhaps a secondary layer of thin, dense fabric inside. An adjustable hem would probably benefit some people with multi-sized dimensions. New navy is a solid color especially with the heathered look.
Awful fabric is pilling everywhere
I've had the jacket for 10 months now so am able to write with reasonable experience. Within weeks the fabric started pilling at the collar, but now is very unsightly. The fit is snug yet comfortable. For example, my 1995 Synchilla fleece is still going strong with no pilling at all. I'm now going to give this piece of pilling away to charity and will try their new Synchilla jacket in the hope that the fabric isn't as bad.

Great Daily Kick-around
This is my go-to for something to put on no matter where I'm going. Great fit, soft, subtle color. My only complaint is that the chest pocket zipper is shot and the main zipper is failing. Admittedly, I bought this in 2018, but I don't know how to replace zippers so it might be getting retired soon, unfortunately.
Great Jacket - Too Long for Some Reason
I'm 5'9" and always order large jackets/fleeces, etc. from Patagonia. Until this one, they fit perfectly. This sweater/jacket is unusually long and I can't figure out why. Fabric needs improvements
I have owned the jacket for five months. I really like the fit and color of the jacket. Unfortunately the outer surface of the fabric is now rough with pills. A soft roughness like an old teddy bear. Hey David, thanks for the feedback about the pilling on your jacket. This is something that is unfortunately common, and inevitable, with knit garments due to the nature of those fibers. Happy with the full-length zipper
Happy with the full-length zipper version of this sweater. It is comfortable, the tight-knit fleece performs well, and I like the color pattern. I'm 5'10" 175 lbs and a Medium may have been better fitting (but the Large works fine, just a little long).
Great overall but wish arms were longer
I like almost everything about this. It's quite warm, looks good, and is well made. It's geared towards casual, non-active uses since it's pretty heavy and doesn't breath too well. Great Product, however what I noticed with the Better sweater as well as the Better Vest is the chest pocket's develop holes in them. It was easy to repair myself but it was annoying have small items (chapstick) getting stuck in the linings of the sweater. Other than that this is a great product that fits my frame well. However, as you wear the jacket, the fleece will gradually pack down and the jacket will feel more relaxed in fit. Also, I prefer the heathered or mixed colourways(i.e. Nickel, Stonewash, Khaki) over the solids(Black, Navy, Green). The inevitable fabric piling that occurs over time is more pronounced, more obvious, on the solid colourways. Overall great product. Would prefer to have a slim fit version for men, with more taper towards the waist. Sleeves are slightly long for me but workable. Any thought to a cotton/wool/natural fiber product only? Also would definitely benefit from one or two inside pockets! Thanks.
I don’t like the heathered material. The color wasn’t truly black and frays easily.

The better Sweater Jacket is my daily driver. Better Sweater Fleece is worthless if you step outside. I find that the material is so porous that walking on a cool day is enough to let the breeze in and cool me down. Cheap quality that I would expect to find at Target for 1/4 the price
My wife & I both bought these & they 'pill-up' so bad that she constantly has to use a 'clothes shaver' on them. She says the quality is no better than one of the big box stores. For the exorbitantly high prices you guys charge for your gear I'm very disappointed in the quality.

Nice jacket BUT too THIN
Hi, I just want to say I love Patagonia as a company, and would love to continue supporting its business. This year's XXS seems larger, and the arms are much longer than my older sweater. Please please please stop changing what's been working for people. If you want to introduce new sizes for everyone else, do it like J.Crew and Banana Republic and introduce Regular, Petite, and Long/Tall sizes and keep the old sizes as they were. The fit in the Better Sweater is what I have come to expect an... Read Mored count on from Patagonia. I am 5'11" 175# and wear a 15 1/2 34-35 dress shirt. My arms are a bit long for my height so a medium in some shirts and jackets may fit me well in the chest and shoulders but be too short in the sleeves . The Better Sweater jacket in medium fits me perfectly in the body -- trim, but not tight, and the sleeves fit me perfectly. The trim fit makes it just right for layering under a Nano-Puff or Down Sweater. Couldn't be happier.
As other reviews have mentioned, the arms are longer. Also, unlike most Patagonia jackets, this one has a trim to it. So instead of the massive waste of fabric meant for fat American bellies, the larger sizes broaden the shoulders and waist proportionately. The fabric is thick, durable, and extremely comfortable. Great coat all around.
Arm length and sizing just wrong.
I tried a size L, my usual size, on in a store. Too tight all over and the sleeve length was ridiculously long. I could possibly live with that if the cuffs had some kind of elastic or Velcro closures but they don't. The cut of this product was not well thought out. So....it didn't go home with me.
Quality still good
Not sure what the fuss about sizing is, the jacket is true to size. This 2015 version is a little longer than my 2011 better sweater, but the extra length is welcomed as I'm 6'3". The sleeve length is pretty much the same My only complaints with the jacket is that it feels lighter (and less warm), and the zippers feel a lot cheaper.... Read More I love the strong feel of the zippers on my older better sweater, and the new ones feel almost like plastic or something. Anyway, still happy with this sweater, it's extremely comfortable
Sleeves Absurdly Long
I typically wear shirts with 33" arms. I bought a Medium and the sleeves are about 4" too long. Almost completely cover my hands. Also, the length of this jacket could stand to be shortened by a couple inches. I'm 5'-11" and this jacket feels like it was designed for a much taller person...with unnaturally long arms. Whoeve... Read Morer at Patagonia signs off on sizing needs to be re-evaluated. It's really too bad because the overall style of the jacket is great.
Sizing is one size too large
Unfortunately this sweater is one size too large. I am 6'2" and pretty slim and I am almost always a medium so I got the medium but it's at least one size too big. Just about to order a small so hopefully that one does the trick. I would recommend going to a store to try on before buying. That's my experience, hope it helps you ... Read Moreout with sizing!
Had high hopes, sizing failed me
Overall build and quality of the jacket is the best out there - but the sizing is completely off. Ordered down a size and still sleeve length and jacket length was too long. Traditionally wear the same size in all other items by Patagonia, but for some reason the sizing is completely off with this product. Looks like many others have had this same ... Read Morecomplaint, hopefully Patagonia is paying attention to the reviews and will address this sizing issue in a product update.
To chime with others: the sizing is strange. I have a large Better Sweater vest. Fits great. But the jacket version? A full 3-4 inches longer in the torso. Arms gorilla-length. Tried a medium. No luck. Too tight. It's as if the large was mislabeled since that vest version of the large fits fine.
So Far ,So Good!
I recently bought this to "update" a simple Synchilla Full-Zip, that was an excellent piece, and what a treat this is. The red color looks great, the fit (on a smaller build) is spot on, though the sleeves are a little long on my short arms. I have not had it too much, nor have I put it too lot's of abuse, but take that for what you ... Read Morewill. If there were anything I would say, it would be that the wind rips through pretty badly, though any sweater/fleece would experience the same thing. Great for going to the market, walking the dog on a cool day, sitting in cold offices, airplanes, or classrooms, sightseeing, and hanging out around the house. I probably wouldn't hike in it, but it hasn't gotten cold enough yet to make that call.
Good jacket but pilling. Size is goofy.
I may have an older model but I'm looking to get a new version and wanted to pass on my feedback. I'm 5'11", 190lb, muscular chest, short torso w/ crazy long legs. 17" x 34" slim / tailored dress shirt. My main issue is w/ the sizing. Large capilene crews are way too short. My Large R1 pullover doesn't even make i... Read Moret to my waist. I bought a Large Better Sweater and felt like a kid. The medium fits me much better. Guessing your correct size w/out trying on first is like shooting from the hip. I'm a Large in every other brand, regardless if it's for active or casual duty. On another note, the jacket is pilling quite a bit. I often wear it over scrubs in the cooler temps and then layer it in the winter. Regardless of the issues I still really like the item. I like the warranty, I like the environmental stance, etc. I still have products from 20 years ago and those that didn't last were replaced. I'll still buy your gear but would really like to see the sizing streamlined regardless of manufacturing facility, intended fit (slim vs regular), and intended usage.
Light, Warm and Oddly Sized
I like this sweater a lot. It's light, yet very warm. I purchased it to wear at home and work during those cool autumn days. I really like the material and workmanship that is typical of the Patagonia brand. The only complaint has to do with sizing. I'm 5'10" and 196lbs and I had originally purchased a size large. However, upon ... Read Moretrying it on I found the sleeves were a few inches too long and the section around my torso was very loose. I mailed the item back and ordered a medium. The medium fit just fine.
Works for me
It's like a sweater only better, just as the name says. Still wearing my original one, after several years, I would say it holds up very well. I personally have not had a problem with fabric pilling. As one reviewer had mentioned. I hope this doesn't happen cuz I love my better sweater jacket. I was grateful to have this jacket while trav... Read Moreeling last fall up in Vermont
I own a Better Sweater from last year (2014) in size medium. I am 5'11" and 170 lbs. I just tried on the new version of the Better Sweater with the added Napoleon pocket in size medium. Unfortunately, the sleeve length is now two or more inches longer and covered half of my hand whereas the old version fit me perfectly. Too bad!
hate to be a pill...
Surprised to see that Patagonia has deleted old reviews of this product! I wrote last year that the Better Sweater Jacket I had was a nice fit, comfortable wear and satisfactorily warm BUT the fabric pills something fierce! After just a few months of casual use -- mostly indoors! -- the front and arms looked awful from pilling. I liked to wear the ...
