Rock shorts vs. Quandry
After a year, I really like my Quandry shorts- I just bought a couple of pairs as back up in case Patagonia quits making them. They are good for travel (they look good, even with repeated daily wear with rough hand washing), hiking, backpacking, scrambling and running (shortish, say up to five miles)- they are quick drying, comfortable and have use... Read Moreful pockets. They got me away from trying various running shorts for this purpose (which in addition to looking uber dory on my old body, left thighs exposed when bushwacking, and worked poorly with a harness) But I live in SE UT and wandering often involves sliding and chimneying through abrasive sandstone. The quandry shorts quickly started to show signs of wear, rear pocket threading came undone, etc. No complaint here, this is very rough use and I didn't really expect these light shorts to hold up. (I learned long ago that I would shred my favorite wool blend shirts in a single short crack- I now wear cotton t-shirts instead). So I bought a pair of Rock shorts to try for this purpose. They are stouter and they hold up better. But they are also a little stiffer, don't stretch much and are missing the zippered front pocket useful for a phone found on the Quandry shorts. As a result, they are not as comfortable. They were fine for a shortish warm hike (up Tuk) but I probably wouldn't wear them on a long day and certainly not on a backpack. I will wear them if I know the day will involve cracks/scrambling. I expect they will wear out much faster than the old stand-up shorts I once revered- but I'm willing to compromise some in order to avoid that thick fabric. I know all this commentary is a bit obvious. Both are good shorts, just buy them for the right activity.
nice shorts, poor durability
These shorts fit really well and have great features. The durability of this material is awful. I've worn them less than 10 times and there are two areas on the thighs that have worn through with little use. I can't think of anything rough I've done in these shorts that would cause this so I'll attribute the wear to a weak fabri... Read Morec choice. Disappointing to say the least
