Beyond the Mountain by Steve House (Patagonia published paperback book)

February 9, 2014

What a Classic!

I have read quite a few mountaineering/alpinist books (among them 'Touching the Void' and 'The Shining Mountain' - two extraordinary books) and while I am just halfway through Steve House's 'Beyond the Mountain', I can safely say this is also an extraordinary book, well written and gripping - and it ranks right up... Read More there with some of the greatest mountaineering books of all time.. Steve has a great writing style, every chapter seems to grab you and hold on - and he lays it bare on himself, very open, honest and on his motives, strengths, and fears. This to me is what a key essence of the book is - very open and honest on things that went well and things that did not go so well. These days you hear a lot of what Alex Honold has been doing, well some of the things that Steve does in this book are pretty unbelievable, even if told in Steve's modest style. I cannot recommend this book enough (even though I am barely halfway through it!). You will not be disappointed.

Brilliant read

I just finished reading Beyond the Mountain. I have been climbing since I was around 13 (I am now 42) and I have read a wide range of climbing literature. Beyond the Mountain is, by far, one of the best I have read. I actually caught Steve's presentation at Mountain Fest (Keene Valley) a couple of years ago when he presented Beyond the Mounta... Read Morein and spoke about his experiences in climbing and life. I have no idea why it took me so long to get around to reading it, but it did and that was my loss. Don't do what I did, read it now.

Must Read

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is quite well written, and I think gives the reader a very good presentation of the concept of "suffering well". There is much to learn here with regard to preparation, and true light and fast alpinism, and overcoming adversity. I have recommended it to a few non climbers too, who all enjoyed the book ve... Read Morery much. I am quite sure that anyone with ANY sense of adventure will be more than pleased with this book.
