Stylish & Rugged
This is a solid winter parka. Not too thick or thin and incredibly warm. I originally ordered a medium, which fit, but wasn't quite exactly right. Very nice coat
This is a very nice coat. Warm enough to wear on its own for most occasions, at least where I live, and light enough that you can layer under it without becoming too bulky to move. This is the only article of Patagonia gear that I've ever been let down by. I'm in Boston and this jacket is just not up for cold weather. There's virtually no insulation in the sleeves and my arms get cold within 5 minutes of being outside. Today I took my dogs for a walk in 28º weather with a t-shirt and heavy flannel underneath an... Read Mored had cold elbows and arms within 5 minutes of leaving the house. I don't get cold easily, in the past I have worn the same thing under my Down Sweater or Nanopuff and have been comfortably warm so it is frustrating to have my "warmer" jacket underperform so woefully. It's a nice looking jacket but seems to be designed for fashion instead of function. If you live down south and think that 50º is cold, this is for you, otherwise look elsewhere.
Warm, Comfortable, & Stylish!
I purchased the buckwheat color of the Patagonia Men's Isthmus Parka about a month ago and couldn't be happier. It's warm (7/10--perfect for casual wear or hiking), comfortable, and stylish. I had to size up in this jacket. Now everyone has a different body shape/type so sizing up may not be needed for everyone. For reference, I own a silent down in XL and a stretch nano storm in XL. However, in a down sweater or nano puff I need XXL. I dont like my jackets fitting like gloves on me. In XL this jacket made me think "this is a very... Read More nice jacket" but in XXL it was "this jacket is amazing". VERY warm. 100% warmer than my silent down. With just a tshirt under this jacket I can be very comfortable to 20 degrees, with my silent down I would say 30 would be the lowest before Id want a long sleeve under it. Ive worn this jacket while it was actively snowing and while playing in the snow with my child. It was 14 degrees out and I had a therm long sleeve under the jacket, the jacket kept ALL moisture out but I did manage to work up a little sweat just by very minimal amount of activity. This jacket will keep me and you warm to any temps without needing a bunch of under layers. This jacket is by far one of the best winter jackets Patagonia has to offer.
Comfortable and Warm
I am 6 feet tall and weighing 191 lbs. That puts me on the overweight side. This Isthmus parka fits well when I only wear one layer underneath it. That said, it keeps me warm in outdoor temperatures as low as 30° F with only one shirt underneath it. I have absolutely enjoyed my purchase so far.
Perfect for Portland winter
Just right balance to stay warm and dry in drizzle and rain. Hand warmer pockets are comfortable and flap pockets are perfect for stuff like keys, dog bags, and a hat. The hood is cut just right to block the rain but not your vision. Plus it looks good, understated technical yet doesnt look like mountain gear.
Keep Warm, Pack Light
I was very surprised to find how light the jacket was when it first arrived (I thought it would be a little puffy). However, my initial skepticism was put to rest as soon as I took it outside. For the test run, I wore it outside for about an hour with the real feel around 20 degrees F. Underneath, I wore only a thin long sleeve shirt, but neverthel... Read Moreess stayed toasty the whole time. The outer material did a nice job blocking the wind, and seems to be fairly water resistant. Perfect for the uk - love it
I am quite particular about my winter jackets. I’ve been through a few !! I measure every jacket with the same test, can I wear a T-shirt underneath, stay dry, keep warm and look great. Uk winter weather damp, cold and windy so this jacket needs to deliver and it does just that. My first Patagonia and I can’t see me switching brands again.
Tight Under Arms & Short
Another great looking jacket! In our case, the fit was off. Wearing a fleece underneath, the jacket was too tight under the arms. For this reason, we will return it. For a man of 6' 0", it was shorter than wanted. It is a handsome, well-conceived jacket. We are sorry it didn't work for us.

Really wanted to love this jacket
Fit is great, the pile on the interior is super soft, and while its not SUPER warm, it is if you layer. The only reason I would not recommend is a bit nitpicky, while the fleece pile is super soft, this is also its downfall. I found it matting around the back and neck within a season of use. While the jacket itself will likely last a number of year... Read Mores, I anticipate the matting only getting worse and because of the light color of the fleece, it is very visible and looks like I am wearing an feral dog around my neck. I'd much rather see a stronger fleece lining that may not be as soft, but will keep its shape for more than a couple years.
Thanks for taking time out to leave us a review. We value your feedback and are sorry to hear you weren't satisfied with the fleece lining of the Isthmus Parka. Please know you are welcome to return this as it is covered under warranty given your situation. We welcome you to check out our [Men's Isthmus Jacket](https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-isthmus-jacket/26990.html?dwvar_26990_color=OWBR) as it has a similar style and feel to the parka, minus the fleece lining. No such thing as too many pockets
Used daily for 10K steps and recreational hikes during below-freezing weather. The number and utility of the pockets allows for a pack to be skipped without leaving behind any essentials. Warm, Comfy - Killer build
This fur lined parka has been the solution to a lot of my cold days. I originally bought it to replace one jacket, but it ended up replacing a couple instead because of its versatility. Some nice touches : the DWR coat actively works and beads rain quite well, the zippered hood attachment is clutch, and the pockets are large. Fit wise, I’m 6’3 but ... Read Moreskinny so a large was perfect. Usually I’d rep an XL just to compensate for length but Patagonia XLs are very wide and boxy if you don’t have the body mass to fill them with. I’d recommend buying this jacket if you’re just over those cold city temps at night (loves 30 degree weather) and you want something fashionable yet technical.
Overall good piece. Just warm
Overall good piece. Just warm enough for 0 to 5 deg. Mainly for casual wear. Nice removable good option. Hood feels a bit small. Hand warmer pockets feel a little out of position if you are coming from other jackets. Too bad there's no fleece for the sleeves, that could make it just a tad warmer.
Decent, not the best
The external material on the jacket is thinner than expected and not as bulky/canvas-like as You tend to see with heavy-duty/rugged parkas. I always have a hard time finding jackets small enough for me so that I don't lose most of my heat. This jacket fits perfectly and doesn't impede my movement either. 170lbs, 5'11". Very well made. Perfect for your New England falls and winters. Handles heavy rain and wind very well.. You will probably need to layer up though. I ordered a large. Its a little to long, but fits my back and my arms, with some room for layering. If you want a form fit, order one size down.
Great looking jacket / terrible sizing
Loved everything about the jacket, but the sizing was terrible. Bought a large, was way to big. Returned and bought a medium, was too tight across the shoulders. I am 6'1" and 190 lbs with an average build. I tried so hard to make this jacket work, but in the end it was not working at all.
Great look / very narrow / not very breathable
I like the parka. It is well constructed, the design is great, and the materials look high quality. I find the fit a bit narrow at the bottom, but the one size up is too long in the arms / torso. But... the jacket is not very breathable. For this reason, I don't think it is suitable for anything but light activity. E.g. good for waiting for the bus in winter, but not so great for raking leaves. I don't know how I would compare it to the industry standard, but I find it far less breathable than my previous, very warm (but now worn out), parka of 12+ years. I know making clothes out of recycled plastic is good for the planet ... but I miss the natural fibers of my previous jacket. All in all, I rate this 5 stars on style, 5 stars on comfort, 4 stars on fit, 3 stars on breathability.
Only one thing to become perfect parka.
Overall, this is the best parka I've ever had. Fitting, Style, Versatility, Material are on top rank. Only one thing that is its weakness is warmer pockets. It should be fleece lined since added weight is negligible (this is not performace jacket) while added feeling will be much more appreciated. Hope to see this come true.

An awesome jacket for everyday use
This jacket is well worth the money, its nicely made, with good attention to detail and stitching that will hold up to daily use. Normally I would have to pair my old coat with a hat to keep my head warm, however the hood on this jacket is more then enough. I am very happy with the fit, and the length of the jacket as well. I would absolutely buy this again. Only cons are keeping the inner lining clean, it doesn't run all the way down the arms, so that helps. The pockets are nice and deep, with plenty of storage for phone, keys etc. Overall I'm super happy with the jacket, we will see how well it holds up. My previous jacket worked well for 10 years or so, and I am now using it as my coat for yard work, etc.

The jacket itself is great - tuff, and burly beyond its weight - this jacket is a keeper. Something about the design of the hood also makes it stay comfortably on my head without it slipping off in the rain or restricting visibility. It definitely keeps me comfortably warm during the colder days or nights when commuting or walking around with just one layer underneath. The jacket also has an internal drawsting located slightly above the waist which helps trap air. The newer version has chest pockets with flaps on the top. The older version has two vertical zippered pockets which i find to be much more ergonomical. The fit of this coat is not ideal for me, but it probably works well for most people.
