Great shorts. These are purpose-built for running, not hanging around town. Thanks to Patagonia for making such light, functional running gear. Pockets are excellent--spare but there.
LOVE these and highly recommend! I'm about 6'2" and 225-230, would probably go with an XL as they are a little tight, but the "plan" is to lose a few more lbs, so I think they'll be perfect!
I can see where a young fast runner would love them as there is a cell phone pocket and a little pocket for car key. Very light weight and good for hot races. not very practical for older runner. Terrible liner, have to return
Really wanted to love these shorts, ran with them twice and each time the liner was rubbing terribly against my upper leg. Ended each run with serious chaffing. Was really optimistic because the short exterior, especially the pockets seem great but the lining is way too short. Have to return.

Internal Liner: A "Brief" Complaint
I bought my first pair of these (reluctantly) about 6 years ago. I was skeptical of the internal liner, (okay, so it's underwear) but I got very used to the boxer brief liner in the strider pro shorts. Great running shorts
This will be my ninth pair of the strider shorts. The development continues to get better and better as does the quality and the overall fit and feel. These shorts are great. Got a set of 5" and 7" ones and they're both awesome. My only complaint is that there's no way a modern smart phone will fit into that rear pocket. When they say "most smart phones"will fit, I don't know which ones they're referring to. Overall great if you can get around that.
These are great. Super simple but with I believe four (4) nice little technical elastic pockets around the waist. Pockets are perfect for a key, gels, and can even my iphone (med size phone). Aussi bien que la version en 5 pouces que j'ai depuis quelques années déjà. Cependant les poches sur les côtés sont plus petites qu'avant donc une veste Houdini en boule ne passe plus. C'est dommage pour ma part.
I own 3 pairs of the previous boxer brief liner 7in inseam strider pro; I thought between the incredible quality, and my own ignorance, that a dialed product would not be redesigned for the worse. I referred more friends, strangers, and clients to them than maybe any other piece of gear in my kit. Since those care free initial years, I have been nursing them along since I saw they moved to the brief liner. I have repaired, worn supplemental liners after blown seams, learned to sew stretchy fabric, rationed their use, hang dried and gentle washed them to extend their life, and convinced myself the chafing from breakdown still beat the replacements. The new liner simply does not work the same way, the boxer was incredible for comfort and preventing chaffing during any activity. You could literally live in them. and that was not only nice but necessary when I was working in the field. I gave the new ones a try and after poor fit and chaffing, exchanged for the normal strider (per the recommendation of the very helpful and understanding customer service folks) with the boxer liner but no pockets; it was a different liner and no pockets, more constricting fit, and a less dynamic material. If I could source that original liner material, I'd happily retrofit and repair my way to oblivion with five star reviews all of the way. While this note might have been a better submission to the worn wear blog, I do think it has a place here, reviewing these redesigned shorts again, as a document, a testament, an homage, and most certainly, a humble yet emotionally charged request to designers to bring back those award winning, crowd pleasing, pinnacle of the skies out thighs out experience. Great short buttttt....
I've had two pairs of strider pro 7" shorts. One is probably 7 years old the other maybe 5.

I had to order online and without checking them out because no local stores have them. I figured they'd be the same old trusty shorts. I excitedly opened the box and found that the boxer brief had been replaced with one of those shorter inserts. The one that used to be exclusive to the 5" strider pro. This was a SUPER bummer! I just know that these type of inserts don't work for me as I chafe like crazy with them. I'm finding its harder to find running shorts with the longer spandex boxer brief these days. Now I'm stuck wondering if I should return them or cut out the liner and wear a set of separate briefs. I just love the versatility of having a brief in the shorts.
I do really like the new pocket layout sizes. My phone fits more secure than my 5 year old shorts, like my 7 y/o shorts do. The outer material still feels great and pocket layout is great.
Patagonia, PLEASE bring back the boxer briefs. My skin down under will thank you. Heck, why not offer both sized briefs in the 7"? I'm pretty bummed. Looks like I'll be stretching the lifespan of my old trusty shorts even more, much to my girlfriend's dismay. I'd totally buy some older models with the boxer briefs if you have any left!

excellent summer shorts
Excellent most comfortable shorts for summer.
maybe ,the side cuts could be lowered to nine trails shorts height.
it is too hi for my liking, but that did not prevent me from buying one on every color.
These are great running shorts. The pockets are pretty small, so I never run with anything in them, but they work for holding my phone or headphones while I'm walking. The inner liner negates the need for underwear, but it is a little snug.
Over all I like Patagonia running shorts but I am not a fan of the brief liners which seem tight in the thigh which is why I decided to return. Depending on your build these might be great and in general Patagonia is my turn to brand.
Very handy back pocked w zip that perfectly fits my phone for longer runs, also nice and sleek design of the side pockets with no extra zippers. Highly recommended!
These shorts are essentially exactly as offered. Liner wasn't shown in the description on the site so I was expecting something that fit way different. On long runs the liner digs in, hard. Material a bit stiff but dries quickly.
I ordered a pair in my size but they were so small it hurt to wear them so I sent them back for the next size up. Now the fit is fine but I'd still rate these shorts as nothing more than average.
I consider the 2018 Strider shorts (both 5" and 7") to be the pinnacle of running shorts, and was let down with this new generation of Strider shorts.

Perfect running shorts due to ample storage, including large phones in side pockets (a must vs the back pocket, which tends to wobble). Great design and a great fit with so much storage options.
I really wanted to love these shorts. I own two pairs of the Patagonia nine trails shorts for hiking and running and was looking for something a bit lighter and breathable for hot weather runs, I thought these would fit the bill. They are indeed lighter and more breathable, but those pros are outweighed by several cons. First, fit: the outer is nic... Read Moreely sized but the inner brief liner is way too loose. As a result they are not supportive enough down there and this creates discomfort when running. Next, pockets: the rear pocket is nice for keys but the side pockets for phones are too loose and the phone or anything heavy bounces around like crazy; I have to hold my phone when running in these. Durability wise these are definitely not great; my nine trails shorts are 2+ years old and going strong but these shorts are popping threads after just a few months of usage. Finally, the shorts quite noticeably smell bad after a single run/workout, worse than any shorts (even cheap department store shorts) I've owned. Overall very disappointed in this subpar product from a typically stellar company.

Almost perfect, liner is a problem
These are really nice and I would love to keep them, but the liner is really tight and not comfortable, would much prefer the liner style that is on the nine trail shorts. Returning due to this.
These shorts will be my main workout and hiking shorts. They are a little bit longer than expected, but still looks great. The liner is a bit tight, and needs some getting use to.
I like everything about this short except its a little restrictive in the upper thigh area when running. Doesn't allow for full motion of upper legs. I also wish there were just basic side pockets. Love the location of the zipper key pocket. The liner rubbed and caused irritation so I cut it out. Ive never been a fan of short liners.
The shorts are good and they fit very well. The only thing that sort of disappointed me a bit is that they feel a bit more "plasticky" form outside - this is normal for most of running shorts but I like a bit more fabric feel. Incredibly light and comfortable, but you might size up.
I originally bought these in a size Large, as I have always worn L running shorts from Patagonia, but upon arrival, they fit like 1975 Boston Marathon shorts. Once I switched to XL, I am having trouble wearing anything else. They are so light and comfortable and the somewhat-hidden side slit is amazing as far as letting your leg move freely.
I have a slightly more athletic build and the liner in these is tight. Like really tight. Its a brief liner so it really digs in. The pockets on the side are all separate. So you have 4 mini side pockets and one medium-small rear pocket. None of which a modern smart phone could fit in. The fit of the shorts themselves is nice as is the material.
It's soft and practical: side pockets are big enough for an iPhone 13 pro max, back pocket is big enough for a wallet and keys. I love the fabric and the inner underpants because they never chafe. It's baggy enough but not too much. It's just perfect. I own 4 of those. I only wish the material was more tear resistant.
I absolutely love these shorts and wear them for trail running and salt water fly fishing. Super comfy and fit me well. Could not be happier with these killer shorts!
In line with what others have posted...Strider shorts have been my favorite running/workout shorts for many years but the Strider Pro 7in shorts now run way too small in size M. love the look, color, weight and length of the shorts but the inside underwear liner tends to rub in the wrong places. The way the stitching of the liner is designed, there is a small knot that rubs which over long miles, I am afraid might rub a blister. This would be the only thing I would change.

Cons: the liner is a bit too small and taught. When it gets warm out it has trouble keeping everything contained. I've had these shorts for a couple of months now, and wear them several days per week. I use them to run and work out in the gym, and the stretchy material is perfect. Very comfortable. As someone who likes gear that just works and doesn't call attention to itself, the 7in Strider Pros absolutely fit the bill- or they would if the liner sat 1in lower on my small but (according to my wife) cute cheeks. I have bought baggies in the past. These short are amazing. They are thoughtfully crafted with a premium fabric. The fit is kinda small but the XL definitely works for me.

These are very breathable, look AWESOME, and they highly motivate me to get a workout in. I liked them so much that I got every color. Who knows when this same quality will be around again!
HIGHLY recommended.

These are great shorts for running when you're carrying anything (really), which is all the time. My older shorts were always cumbersome with side pockets and stuff swaying back and forth. All these pockets are functional and hold everything I need.
Might be a little loose, but once washed, they fit perfectly
Why improve on perfection - I miss the boxer brief liners
I have owned several pairs of these amazing trail running short and was so disappointed to find out that Patagonia no longer makes the short with the boxer brief liners. Please bring back the boxer brief liners, pretty please.
These shorts great. I would give them five stars except the phone zipper pocket in the back is a tiny bit small. Especially if I plug in my headphones while running. Other than that they are great!

The other pockets are great, too, but the zip-pocket on the rear waste band is the perfect design feature. It holds my phone (with case) so comfortably that I often forget the phone is there until after I'm seated in my car driving away from the trail head. Thanks again for great design!!
When I first bought this short, I was not a fan but mainly because of the tight feeling. After wearing them for a week, i realized that it was the netting inside so I cut it out. One last thing is that my phone (samsung galaxy) doesnt really fit in the back pocket but that's why I had a fanny pack and this short isn't meant to hold a phone. It will hold an ID, credit card and your house key with the loop. I wear a fanny pack, so this doesn't bother me. Other than that, it's a great short, very comfortable and durable material.
The shorts are as advertised. Im 511, 190, and got the L size. The shorts fit well, are light weight, and are breathable. The side pockets are a little funky but good for keys.
I originally purchased the Men's Strider shorts (7") in size small. I'm 5' 9", 165lbs and have athletic thighs from regular crossfit exercise. The smalls were tight in the thigh as well as the waist. I bought these at the same time as the regular Striders to do a side-by-side comparison before buying more. Very comfy and lightweight, and have swayed me enough that I'm willing to spend the money for a couple more pairs.
I am generally a 33/34 waist (180 lbs) and initially tried the M in this short. My son is now wearing those. They were close, but the Large is a better fit. Bought these on a whim and have become my favorite go to short. These shorts are super light, breathable, supportive and comfortable with lots of storage.

Like many others that have reviewed these shorts I have been a big fan of the Strider pros with the boxer brief liner from past seasons. Patagonia, reading the reviews here, it seems like the debate between brief liners and boxer liners is endless. Some like one type, some like the other. I was nervous buying these as a lot of reviews were complaining about the change in liner design from the boxer breifs to the mesh net. Read Moreve run in shorts with mesh liners and have never been a huge fan of running in briefs; they have more material to absorb sweat, are warmer and I feel like they don't provide as much support. Especially when you run in them for a few days without washing or on long run days, the brief liner tends to stretch and sag. Either way, both are great shorts to run in but I much prefer mesh liners and felt like there needed to be more reviews supporting the design change. If I'd known, I would have just bought two strider pros instead.
I like the brief liner. If you want a boxer liner there are other options. The shorts have a trim fit which I love, not a lot of extra fabric flopping around. No chaffing or rubbing at all. These are easily my favorite running shorts. 6 foot, 33 inch waist, size medium fits fine.
I have to say I am a fan of the new brief liner. I have never liked running in the "biker short" type of liner. The Nine Trails Shorts offer the boxer brief for those that like it. Thanks!
Brief liner was super tight and uncomfortable. Actually cut them out and rarely wear these shorts.
The "non-pro" strider shorts boxer-brief liner is so much better; those are my go to running shorts- they just don't have the pockets that the "pro" has.
One star for brief liner, 100 stars for old boxer brief liner
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEEAAAAASSE bring back the old brief liner! These were the absolute best shorts. I have never found a liner that fit so well and did not ride up. Please bring the old liner back.
I originally ordered these for running (which I use them for) and they are great for hiking, water sports, and lounging. They are light and quick drying. I will definitely be getting additional pairs.
These are quality shorts. Storage system is fantastic, simple to use and effective. Length and fit are great, kudos for the waist tie being on the outside of the short so it doesn’t rub on long runs. Only shortcoming is the inner is a little too large/ loose to provide 5 star support.
No boxer brief, please. Bike short liners in a running product are fad, heavy and grabby. Your developers/testers have made the right choice. This is a runners short.
i love just about everything about these shorts except the liners. the liners are briefs and the edges of them chaff between your leg and crotch, making running pretty uncomfortable. this could be resolved with boxer brief liners like they used to have. patagonia makes superb products and i'm sure they'll fix this issue soon.
My pair from 2017 with full boxer brief liner is easy in my top 3 for outdoor pieces. I’ve run a handful of races and countless miles on the road and trail. I’ve loved the pockets, the fit and functionality, and the liner which was comfortable and prevented chaffing.

These shorts have done a great job threading the needle between being constructed minimally with lightweight materials on one hand, while also being well constructed and robust on the other. Good stuff!
The Strider pro shorts are what running shorts should be-simple, practical, comfortable. My favorite shorts. The material, the pockets, and yes, the liner work well for me. A classic lightweight design that simply works.
Agree with other comments: It’s somewhat baffling that reviewers would read the product’s description, purchase the product, and then poo poo the liner knowing it’s not what they want. The ad clearly states that this i... Read Mores Patagonia’s most technical running shorts. Hence, they shouldn’t have a long heavy non-technical liner. The company also offers a similar less technical pair of shorts with a longer/boxer style liner.
Clearly we don’t need to be ‘pro’s’ to use/buy these shorts; however, perhaps we should at least be able to understand and appreciate the how’s & why’s of the ‘pro’ technical features before requesting less technical features in the most technical pair of shorts... IDK.
The older version of these were by far my favorite running shorts of all time. The boxer liner was extremely comfortable with no chafing, the pockets were just right, and they were durable. The change to brief liners completely ruined these shorts for me. I wish I could still find some of the old stock.
Hi Chris, we're sorry that you're unhappy with the changes to the brief inside of the Men's Strider Pro Shorts. I love the shorts, fifth pair since 2012, I have been using them for longer runs and races, all because the inner lining was something I preferred to have, to avoid chafing without having to use any extra products. Yes, the name says "pro," but if you only expect "pros" who are running to break records (like a reviewers states), then you are not going to be selling many shorts (I am going to assume most consumers are not "pros"). Patagonia has been selling this short for a while and this is a great product, it would be nice to have the option to have a longer lining for those, like myself, who prefer it. Just a thought.
Four stars for not having the option to have longer lining (or providing a clear warning for people who assume they will be very similar to the previous iteration of this product). I still love running with this version of the shorts.
Sincere question: was the design change was made based on customer feedback? Just curious.

Super light. Needs a larger pocket
I like these shorts. Just wish it had a larger zipper pocket for a large screen phone.
My new go-to running shorts. I’ve never owned the previous version, which many seemed disappointed by the change. For me they’re perfect. This is the third pair i’ve purchased this year.
Bought them because they finally did not have a boxer liner. Love the brief liner and overall a great short! Used to use the 5” short but love the longer version.
Bought these to wear in my 100 miler in a month. I have worn on a few training runs and so far and have been very happy with them.
