Protect the ocean so it can protect us

Our future is tied to the ocean. Its shared seas connect us through food, culture and sport. The home of amazing, abundant life, it’s also a powerful climate solution. Yet the practice of bottom trawling threatens to destroy this precious resource—bulldozing our ocean floor, undermining small-scale fisheries and deepening the climate crisis. Let's end this destructive practice, starting with an immediate ban in marine protected areas and inshore zones.

Great jacket

Perfect jacket for mountain biking. The only thing that is not working is the edge of my right sleeve has started to fray/unravel after two wears. Bummed about this.

My go to shell for every bike ride!

I LOVE this piece. I got my second one. The fit works well for me. It's not too baggy, and it is certainly not tight fit. Ideal for my generous body! :) It has an inside pocket on the chest, which was made to carry reading glasses for the over 50 rider that I am. Always handy and far enough from breaking. It is ver versatile. I use it in... Read More winter over a warm fleece of on top of a merino shirt for fall | spring or windy summer days. It breathes very well and blocks enough of the wind factor. Almost Perfect...

Okay - so I've had this jacket out on several cool weather rides and have to say that it is by far my favorite mountain biking jacket so far. The fit (I'm 5' 10", 170 lbs and take a medium) is spot on with enough room underneath for a mid layer, but not so much extra material that it's flapping in the wind when your ripping... Read More downhill. The only design suggestion I would offer is to add a vent across the back of the jacket to allow extra heat/moisture to escape. The back on my base layer can tend to get pretty soaked while wearing this and doesn't really get a chance to dry out since the back is completely closed/sealed. Other than that I love this one and imagine it will be my go to wind shell for shoulder season mountain biking for years to come!

The best lightweight jacket I've ever owned

This is easily the best lightweight jacket I've ever owned. I originally bought it for mountain biking but I use it more often over a base layer climbing in the winter if it's not too cold out. It's slightly flexible, breathable and works well as an outer layer in a high movement activity like bouldering. I don't really have any... Read More complaints but I do wish they made a non-hood version or redesigned it to allow for stowing the hood somehow. When climbing, I generally don't want anything over my head, and if it's windy it often blows into my face.

Hello Joshua, thank you for your review of the Men's Dirt Roamer Jacket. We love to hear that it can be used for a variety of different activities! We wanted to let you know that the hood can be stowed by rolling it into cinch hood. There is an example of this in one of the photos of the [Dirt Roamer Jacket](https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-dirt-roamer-mountain-bike-jacket/24381.html) if you want to take a look!

Excellent fit except the shoulders

As per usual Patagonia just missies that dialed fit. Its almost there but if you look at photos of the jacket on users you can see that shoulders taper towards the top. I understand that a lot of cyclists have small shoulders but on someone with normal sized or larger shoulders it looks funny. Other than that the jacket functions well and does it... Read Mores job while being light and packable. The sleeves are plenty long and I have a high ape index so this was executed correctly and serves its purpose. My only other concern is that whoever constructed my jacket got a little bit lazy with the glue and a lot the glued seams look stained through the fabric straight from the factory. Since I use it mountain biking its not a huge concern but the attention to detail is not there for the price of the jacket. Positively the jacket is plenty long on the rear for cycling but The back pocket zipper is awkward and hard to access on the move.

Comfortable, Durable Materials, Fit is Tricky

Purchased this jacket on sale specifically for MTB and gravel biking in cool and windy weather (upper 40s to low 60s F) and for those specific purposes this has become my favorite biking jacket. Sizing: I'm 6'2, 185lbs, 31" waist, 40" chest with a longer than average torso and arms and initially purchased a size large, which, ... Read Morefit perfectly in terms of the torso length, arm-length, and hood size, but there was too much excessive material in the torso width, so I decided to size down to a medium which is more form fitting but still is loose-enough with a small amount of stretch suitable for dynamic MTB riding positions and more stationary riding positions while gravel biking. Quality is what you would expect from Patagonia. The material is very soft and comfortable against the skin if just wearing a short-sleeved shirt; the material is durable, repels light-rain and mud, and the two pockets (chest and rear) are functional enough for small items; the chest pocket holds my iPhone 12 mini; the rear pocket is slightly larger and will easily hold my phone and a snack (for example, Lara bar). Even though the jacket does not have pit/under arm vents or zips, it breathes well (better than the Houdini Jacket), dries quickly, and it packs down reasonably small to store in a backpack, hip pack, frame bag, or a medium-to-large saddle bag; the jacket is not waterproof but the DWR will repel light-rain. I've worn the jacket a few times in light rain showers lastly several minutes and stayed 100% dry, but any heavy or prolonged rain will eventually soak in and leave you wet. The hood provides a decent amount of coverage on my size XL (60-62cm) Smith Engage MTB helmet. Overall, I really like the simplicity and design of the jacket, and don't mind that there aren't pit zips/vents or hand pockets - they're not necessary IMO since this jacket isn't designed to be a high-featured, versatile jacket for multiple activities or a jacket meant for extreme weather conditions. That being said, this is a sport-specific jacket (for MTB) and if you need a more versatile and waterproof jacket, I'd go with a different jacket, like the Calcite Jacket. In my experience, this jacket works best in situations where you just need some protection from cooler temps, wind, and/or light rain, and you're trying to keep gear to a minimum. The jacket is not 100% windproof, but it does take the sting out of cool, windy, mildly rainy weather, particularly on long and fast trail descents. For quick day rides, day-long rides, or even multi-day MTB or gravel adventures where the weather is mild, this jacket is my new top choice.

Nice materials and concept, bad fit

I wanted a packable wind breaker/ soft shell for biking and hiking. This would have been perfect but it was massive on me. The arms and shoulders fit perfect, but it was massive around the stomach. Read Moretions in body types is with a drawstring near the waist, but this didn't have one. In this case all the wind would get in from the bottom. I think it has a lot of potential. Great breathable softshell

Cut is perfect for mountain biking or biking in general. It is super thin, ultralight, and very breathable while also great at shedding mild precipitation. Speciifc - brilliant

Had this jacket for a few years now. I was lucky to buy one when they had a terracotta colour. Love the way it stuffs into its own pocket. Love the way it fits, and the way it looks. My only knock on this jacket is the sizing and its a minor gripe. Ive been exclusively an XL in all things for 10+ years. Made for MTB, but obviously not by MTBers

This jacket is super stylish and is great for a going to the brewery on a slightly chill day/evening. I wore this jacket for a ride on... Read More a 50 degree day with a slight breeze, making it seem cooler than it was. In less than a mile, I had to rip the thing off because of overheating. Some nice vents underneath the arm and side would have been an easy solution, but I had to take the entire jacket off and will never wear it again to ride my bike. I only use it for quick jaunts to the store or for casual situations in moderate temps. Very unfortunate, especially for the price. I would not recommend this product.

Best MTB jacket you can find

This jacket is as close as you get to perfect for the difficult shoulder season weather. I wear it for night rides in AZ where the temp start in 60s/50s and temps drop quick to around lower 40s and this jacket does a great job in just a t-shirt for both temps. It sheds/vents heat when hot and blocking out wind when cold. It doesn't give a lot ... Read Moreof warmth itself, but I'd imagine a nice base layer you'd be fine with temps into into low 30s. My only critiques would be that there isn't the most space for elbow pads if you ride with those daily and there are no vents, which would be nice if you're riding with a backpack, but wouldn't matter if you ride without pack or hip pack as you could just open the zipper when heating up. It's the best jacket I've found for MTB.

Goldilocks

Are you looking for the impossible combination of a windproof, breathable and waterproof jacket. Look no further. The only two things I don't like is that the hood is a bit too small for a mountain bike helmet which is really odd for a mountain bike specifik jacket. But biggest problem is that the outside pocket is in a silly place, totally unreachable. Feels a bit more like a roadie thing to have the pocket on the back. I don't think having it on the front is a problem in mountain biking. Also a lift ticket pocket could be handy for the bike park, but an ordinary reachable pocket on the left side would be enough make this jacket beyond perfect.

I own a windbreaker and I own a shell jacket, but on some rides, neither is quite right. In the past I've been concerned about spending on mtb jackets because of the risk of them being destroyed in a crash. But cheaper options have always been so flawed as to be useless. Fabric choice makes it a winner

Way too often, jackets are too sweaty to wear most of the time, but the choice of a more air-permeable fabric here makes it far more versatile. However, when riding it is tight enough not to restrict movement but also is not too loose that it interferes with performance. And as always with Patagonia, it is ... Read Morebuilt to last many years. Bottom line, it has become my go to jacket when I am riding in chilly or winter temperatures (near Las Vegas, NV). Definitely recommend.

Awesome but not side pockets

I loved it but it does not have pockets :( We need them :)

Literally get excited for cold weather rides

I cant recommend this jacket enough. Fits comfortably, tight enough so that its flapping in the wind but loose enough that it feels comfy to wear all day. Keeps wind and rain out, the storage pocket is great for keys and phone and a snack, and being able to pack it away and put it into my hip pack is just the cherry on top. I get stoked for cold da... perfect biking companion

I'm embarrassed by how much I like this jacket! It has been great in the windy New Mexico spring, and kept me surprisingly dry in a light rain

Mountain biking in the Dirt Roamer jacket.

I recently got the Dirt Roamer jacket. I went with the wood brown color, which I liketypically I get black, blue, or green and this was a refreshing color change. I'm typically a Medium/Large top. I tried on both sizes and found that the medium length was perfect but the large opened up more movement flow in my upper body (I'm 160 lbs and... Read More I carry myself in my shoulders). The large size fits loose, more like an outdoor jacket fit on me which took a minute to like. After riding in the jacket in and around Truckee, CA in March just between snow cycles, I found the lightweight fabric and breathability optimal. I wore the light weight short sleeve merino jersey underneath with lightweight arm-warmer-style elbow pads underneath and found myself in the perfect temperature. We rode 3 laps; up, down, down up. When climbing I zipped the jacket down from the neck for more ventilation, then quickly zipped it back up with one-hand to drop down the trail. Overall this is a great addition to my mountain bike closet and also like the comfort of wearing a jacket while riding. I also wore it on Mt. Tam in a hard-at-times rainstorm and I remained mostly dry and warm given the dense fog, rain and wind rolling in from the coast. It's flexible and moves well. I'm wearing mine on the loose side. I recommend trying two sizes on for fit. The packability feature comes in handy, I found myself packing it up and stowing it when the sun broke thru. It's super lightweight for how much function you get out of this jacket. Thanks!

Great riding jacket.

Thin, but yet warm. No amount of wind slips through this jacket in my experience. My helmet fits nicely under the hood and the overall fit is snug and comfortable with a nice stretch. It looks good and in my opinion it can pass both on the trail and between bars. Packs to almost nothing. Don’t hesitate, buy it!

Best riding jacket I have owned

It is very breathable and comfy, feels more like a flannel than a jacket. For me this jacket hits the sweat spot for its comfort and ability to breath, with just enough protection to stop the wind and to keep you relatively dry.

Excellent cycling focused soft-shell

I bought this jacket ~ 4 months ago to use while commuting and for MTBing in cool weather and it works great in both situations. My favorite part of the jacket is the material and the fit; it is lightweight, packable and is perfectly cut for riding (long drop tail and longer arms). The negatives: it's expensive! The DWR is only suitable for sh... Read Moreort (~10 minute) rides in the rain or longer if you have tree cover. Overall, it's great for my needs and I'm happy with my purchase!

Any new colors coming soon?

I bought the jacket and really like the design. I returned it because I decided I would prefer a brighter color like orange or yellow for increased visibility. Any plans for new colors in the future?

My new favorite riding jacket.

You know how shoulder season id so hard because you're constantly shuffling layers so you don't overheat on the climbs or freeze on the descents? This jacket fixes that. I have never had a jacket that I could wear throughout an entire ride without being uncomfortable at some point until the Dirt Roamer showed up. I was able to go for a ... Read Morenight ride with my buddies when it was 30-40 degrees. We hammered the climbs, and railed the descents, and I forgot about my layers and was able to focus on the ride. The sleeves are long enough that you're wrists won't get cold, the hood fits over your helmet or stows away, small enough to shove in a hip pack once it warms up, and it even has the pocket in the right spot for a light battery on those chili night rides. I plan on using this layer for XC skiing this season too. It may be spendy but if you laugh at fair weather riders, this is the jacket for you.

Sweet jacket

Super light, comfortable but protective jacket. I actually used the oversized bike helmet hood last week while riding in the rain and it was awesome! The only thing I would change is adding side pockets to make it a more all around usable jacket.

November 19, 2019

Excellent, but hood needs to be held down better

First my one suggestion for improvement. The hood, even if held down by the provided elastic clip, flies up while biking. I use a mirror clipped to my glasses and this blocks the view. Perhaps it needs more elastic hold downs, or perhaps the hood can be rolled into a zippable collar. Despite this criticism this is my go to jacket for biking, x-c sk... Great temperature control on ascents.

Great temperature control on ascents. Very well designed/made; both pockets placed right (I just purchased a second). More wind leakage on descents than I'd expect (feels like through the zipper). Not sure why there's a hood on a primary bike shell. The hood rolls and clips, but is bulky and not secure at speed. Probably better without a ... Read Morehood or if it had a pocket for stowage.

It. Really. Breathes.

A great piece. In 50 degree weather I'm able to keep it on climbing moderately steep trails just by unzipping it and pushing the sleeves up occasionally. Way more usable thsn the Houdini for mountain biking.

Accommodates wildly temperatures

Riding in VT in October, the day started at 38* and topped at 68*. The jacket was the outer layer. It stayed in the game when the mid-layer came off. I unzipped it while climbing and zipped up before descending. Later, it folded easily into my backpack.

Great MTB-Specific shell built with durability

This shell has one feature I wish more Patagonia items had - durability. I have had and seen gnarly crashes in this jacket against rough Tahoe granite and sand, without so much as a scratch on the jacket. I don't leave it on for climbing unless it is a windy day, it compresses so well to store in my pack. The hood is a good size, and stays up ... Read Moreno problem so long as the zipper is up. So far so good. I

So far so good. I was a little surprised to have water start to seep in during a heavy squall, particularly on the shoulders and inner elbows. Outstanding piece and well thought through

This jacket is the perfect mtb jacket. A stretchy slim fitting soft-shell that does what it was sold to do.

I've only worn mine a few days. I found that it is indeed breathable, I left it on for quite awhile on some uphill grinds. I got walloped by an intense afternoon thunderstorm on a ride that took an extra hour or two longer than I expected, and the fabric is indeed "water resistant". About 5 minutes after the deluge began the DWR gave... Read More up the ghost in most places. But then again no-one ever said it was waterproof! The rear left pocket is a little awkward to get into (I'm right handed, why are all the MTB pockets on the jacket and shorts on the left?) and the chest pocket was barely big enough to fit a phone and/or a pair of sunglasses when the forest floor got too dark and I needed to take them off to see. I'm 6'3" normal body shape. The size L torso fits fine (almost a little tight) and the arms are even tighter.

Dirt Roamer

Light and easy to pack. Nice to be able to pull hood over your helmet. Tight in the shoulders and chest. Draw string at the bottom would be a nice addition.

My new fav jacket

I bought this jacket having the cold spring mornings in mind. I wanted to find the perfect piece that would keep me warm but be breathable for those long climbs. The Dirt Roamer has worked perfectly. Love the Dirt Roamer jacket

Great jacket for riding or just wearing in light weather. Nice wind resistance for active use - standing around on a breezy day at my kid's soccer game got a little chilly.
