Time Will Tell
I bought these in XS (my usual size) when my twenty year old red expedition weight couldn't hold up to one more waistband replacement. The waistband on these certainly appears to do better in that department. In fact, that's why I had to exchange them for a small. The body of the leggings was perfect-- the waistband was absurdly painful (... Read MoreI wear size 28). Even the small is tight enough that I have to keep them under the top of the ilium rather than at my waist. It would be too uncomfortable otherwise. I like the light weight of the fabric, but only time (and a full winter or two) will tell if they can compete with my old red expeditions...
Good Long Johns
I just took these out on a trip to AK and spent about two weeks wearing them. So far the quality seems good and I liked the level of warmth they provided with breathability. Did well on a day where we went from getting super hot in the sun to getting cold and blasted by wind after dark.
The cut is too large
I had high hope but it has to go back because the cut is too large for it be useful as an insulation layer.
We're sorry to hear these didn't work for you, Michael and we appreciate your feedback. You may prefer our [Midweight Capilene or Capilene Air Bottoms](https://www.patagonia.com/shop/mens-baselayers). Please let us know if you haven't returned your purchase yet. We'll be happy to help!
Not Quite Right
Bought these for the light weight fabric to help out with my ultralight backpacking kit. Love the fabric weight(5.7oz for the mediums) and comfort but the crotch and ankles are just too loose. When I stretch my knees as in sitting or climbing, the ankles ride up my legs and it takes some time for gravity to let them settle back down to my ankles. T... Read Morehe loose ankles also allow for wind to blow under them. I've got two pairs of poly/spandex tights from another company that hug my legs from top to bottom and don't ride up. Those are 20 years old and still going strong with heavy use...no holes or anything. If these LW Thermals fit like those do, they'd be awesome.
Hey Dale, thanks for leaving us a review, we appreciate your input. It sounds like you might benefit from a size down. Currently we're out of stock in most sizes, but we should be getting more in February. If you'd like to exchange out, you're welcome to begin that process [here](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html). Please note exchanges are only eligible for product in new condition purchased through our website within the year.
A Joy to Wear
A perfect blend of comfort and function. It drapes around the leg in a relaxed fit that allows for more stretch and mobility, but never feels baggy or bunched regardless of movement. They also regulate temp so well that I can wear these if im heading to work outside in -40 degree windchills, or if im just lounging around the house at 62 degrees.... Gets the job done
Amazing thermals that get the job done. They offer great warm but I do find a wind sneaking in depending on the outer layer from time to time. So about the fit. For a rough estimate Im 62 and 185lb. I had to order a Medium but Im normally in a large for Patagonia bottoms. Maybe they expect them to fit loose, but either way I have always liked therm... Fall-Winter Must for Cool Conditions
I live in a cold house no matter the time of year - like 64 degrees max. So I wear these under almost anything during cold spells and feel warm and comfortable. That said, I also wear them under hiking pants, fly fishing waders, guide pants during cool and cold weather. Theyre the most incredible under layer Ive ever owned. I need two pair to get m... An essential winter hiking layer, or casual winter layering piece.
I just bought my second pair of these. My first pair is still going strong after 4 years, but I decided to double up after finding a second pair on sale. These are my favorite base layer for winter hiking in the White Mountains. I wear them under a shell layer in temps below 40F. I've used them down to a -30 windchill and, as I layer them, my... Read More legs don't get cold while I'm hiking. Occasionally in tree cover I find myself venting the sides of my shell pants because my legs can get pretty toasty. My legs do tend to run warmer while hiking. These leggings seem to stay pretty breathable and I'd say they dry on the faster side. These also rule as a casual camping layer in shoulder season, or a under layer in the dead of winter for chilly mornings or casual outdoor activities.
love the fabric but needs some tweaks to be perfect
I love this fabric. The fit is truly odd though. First of all the length is about 2 inches longer than I expected. For me that is not a big deal, I actually like pulling it down over my feet when im cold-kickin it. The real peculiarities lie in the crotch and waist area. For one the front flap doesn't overlap; there is basically just a hole ... Read Morethere which is annoying. If I dont wear underwear my junk will just find its way out between the flaps. Secondly there is enough space to fit like 4 pairs of buttcheeks in the torso portion. I can pull the waist bad up to my nipples. its just a very weird combination of form fitting and baggy. I use them to wear over smartwool leggings that fit my body effortlessly. otherwise in order for them to fit as a standalone piece I roll the waist down 2 cuffs and the leg openings up one big cuff. Also the tags are so annoying and in order to return/warranty them you are supposed to keep the STY portion which just happens to be at the bottom of a tag that feels like it is long enough to be tucked in your socks. I still love them strangely enough and I wear them every day (seriously) the fabric and lofting is so amazing that I can deal with the absurd fit. PS the tops fit perfect. Dont change those please.
While the waist size was accurate, the legs are super baggy. I don't know how they could effectively trap heat inside. Returning.
Hello Dan, we're truly sorry these bottoms weren't the correct fit for you and that they were too baggy on the legs. Our sizing and designs are constantly being revised and customer's feedback is one of the contributing factors to these changes, so receiving messages like this really helps us improve. Thanks for your review!
I wanted something warm to go under my Patagonia Simul Alpine Pants when hiking on super cold days. Today it was 15 degrees and they worked perfectly. I usually go up on sizes but I recommend getting a medium if you're a medium so they keep heat in close to body. I did sweat after a few hours but they kept dry. Perfect combo and worth the pric... Not as warm or comfortable as older version
I bought these to replace the capilene thermal pants my husband lost and was disappointed with the new fabric. The previous set of thermal weight capilene was warmer and felt more comfortable. Love Patagonia but for me this updated pant feels like a miss.
We are sorry to hear that this missed the mark for you and appreciate your feedback. Your satisfaction is so important to us so please feel free to [send](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html) these back.
My go-to baselayer.
Patagonia's capilene thermal weight layers are so phenomenal. The cut/fit is great, really comfortable, no bulkiness, and the fabric is much warmer than one might think just holding it, but with an outer layer and/or shell it really does provide incredible warmth, but even more importantly to me: incredible breathability. I tend to run hot and... Read More sweat easily during medium-to-high output activities, so I absolutely need breathability in cold weather and the cap thermals breath SO well and I'm able to perfectly manage heat buildup. I use the cap thermal pants for everything. Hiking/trekking, fly fishing, and especially snowboarding - you name it, I've worn them for it. Don't ever discontinue these!
I’ve had 5 or 6
I’ve had 5 or 6 sets of your Capilene Long underwear. In the past I’ve bought small sizes without thermal bottoms. Since it’s been awhile since I had a new pair I went to your size chart and bought mediums. They are way too long and from the knee down they are baggy. I hesitate to return underwear that don’t fit. Although the workmanship was good (as usual) this product does not provide the warmth which the "title" represents. They are likely fine for one who on occasion ventures out of the office, I need a non-see through fabric. It feels like a breeze is penetrating my outer wear which is a tight weave and a Patagonia pant.
Ordered based on sizing chart
Ordered based on sizing chart and they were way too small.

Excellent Breathable Base Layer
I've been wearing Capilene thermal weight bottoms for a little over a year now and I continue to be impressed by their performance. The tops and bottoms are extremely lightweight and pack very well. The material is thin - almost 'see through' in between the insulation grid but this does not seem to hinder the warmth at all when layer... Read Moreed under a shell. I have skied 10+ hours with temperatures in the 10-25F range with only a pair of ski pants on over top and never had the slightest bit of a chill. I've decided to purchase a second pair of Capilene Thermal bottoms over merino wool because I really don't feel like the extra warmth of merino wool is worth all the fuss of taking care of it. You can toss Capilene in the wash and it's nearly dry enough to wear after the spin cycle.
Expedition Weight Capilene Seekers
I've seen quite a few reviews on hear discussing the current Thermal Weight Capilene not being as warm as their predecessor the Expedition Weight Capilene. Capilene thermal bottoms-mens
I haven't used them hiking yet but wore them around the house on a cold evening. They feel very comfy and as warm as expected. They fit well; I'm 5'5" and got a small. Unfortunately, the listed weight was way off; very much misadvertising. They are listed at 4.7oz for a medium and i was told 4.3oz for a small. My small weighs 6.... Read More4oz, about 50% more then the listed weight. As someone trying to lighten their pack with an efficient clothing system, this was very disappointing and has me reconsidering patagonia for other lightweight options like rain jacket. Unfortunately i had worn it around for a couple hours and ripped the tags off before weighing it.
Lightweight and packable,not very warm
I purchased these a month ago. They feel nice and are easy to pack. However, they are not warm. They aren't as warm as my older edition Capilene Midweight bottoms. They aren't as warm as some older, cheaper bottoms I have. If you're looking to save ounces, they're great. If you want to stay warm,go with something else.
One could argue these pants are in the gradation between the mid-weight bottoms and a pair of fleece pants, but for me this is not entirely the case, read on. Read Morepants, with the wind and water resistant outer layer, would make the over all set up slightly lighter weight/less bulky but equally as warm, compared to a not ribbed full insulation design. I intended to use these in a 2 layer set up below a pair of rain pants that are not air tight at the ankle, this setup allows a little cold wind up the ankle, which would be of no consequence,if your bottom layer had a full insulation design. Zoom in really close on the web pictures, and you can see what I mean.
A bit disappointed
Bought these thermal weight bottoms believing they would a good replacement for my 10+ year old thermal weight bottom. They are not nearly as warm of comfortable as the original fleece type offering. These are great and are a perfect weight for wearing under my shell while backcountry skiing.
