Truly a black hole
70l black hole bag is exactly what you think it is. A well made, durable black hole. Water resistance coating really beefs up the outer protection. The bag has enough room to fit multiple shoes, all your casual clothes as well as some of my cycling or hiking gear making it the perfect bag for medium to long getaways.
Amazing ability to carry so much!
Our family have been "black hole" Patagonia users for many years. I finally caved and got the 70L size (for myself!) for an upcoming trip to Italy. The ease of packing so much, yet being able to use it as a backpack was the determining factor. This bag is tough, roomy and easy to haul for trips everywhere. Can't recommend this bag en... Good Travel Bag
For road trips, this is my go to bag. I pack everything in and throw it in the trunk of my car. Brought it with me for a weeklong trip to Europe and it worked fine, had plenty of extra space and was surprisingly able to bring it on as a carry on. It did take a bit of shoving to fit it in the overhead compartment. The only things that was a "me... Read Moreh" was actually wearing it as a backpack. Would not recommend wearing it for an extended period of time as it kind of hurts your shoulders after a while. And also if it's not fully stuffed, everything kind of sags down the bag when wearing it like a backpack. Otherwise, this bag is super durable and excellent quality.
easy to travel with
Was given as a high school graduation gift. The new freshman traveled with 3 weeks of clothes from Connecticut to Texas. Duffel was easy to travel through the airport. Easy to store in his room.
We're so glad to hear this duffel worked well for your freshman for his travel and for storing in his room! Afraid we can't help with getting him to clean that room, but there you go...Please let us know if we can be of any help!
Black Hole Bags - Great for everything!
Our family are huge fans of the Black Hole bags. Amazing for family travel, especially with the backpack straps. Before the full line was available we had The North Face version for our kids. Great concept, but we found very hard to use. Fabric was so stiff, and the zippers impossible to use. We started with a black hole backpack for one of our kid... Read Mores for school which was great (we are big fans of Patagonia and have been for years & years). For Christmas we bought 40 & 55 size for our kids, one going to college which it will be perfect for. We have since gone back to purchase the the fanny pack for dog walks, the 70 for the college child, and to start building a set for ourselves. We live in Colorado and try to get up to the mountains as often as we can, easy to throw in the car and stack. Thank you for great options. Great bags, lightweight, and zippers work fantastic!
Holds a TON, easy to transport
I originally bought this bag because I needed a travel bag that didn't have wheels because many places I went weren't wheely bag friendly (lots of dirt and sand paths or stairs) and was still easy to carry. The convertible backpack straps are a BREEZE to use. Though I will say, they can get a little sore if you wear them for a while (lon... Read Moreg trek up a mountain side or through the airport). This bag has taken a beating throughout the US, Europe, South Africa, Botswana, and my remote field work area in Namibia. I've even used this bag in place of a proper "backpacking" pack for an overnight hike in the Black Forest in Germany. Note for flyers: this is definitely not a carry-on-friendly size, but if you need a few weeks' worths of travel gear or you are bringing larger gear, this bag is your go-to! I highly recommend this bag and am considering getting a smaller size for shorter trips as this (70L) one can be a little awkward to carry when it isn't very full (collapses on itself).
Awesome Bag, larger than expected
Just received my bag in the mail. Very pleased with the quality of it, but was surprised by how large it is (guess they don't call it that black hole for nothing). Was curious is anybody has any experience carrying this on a plane in the overhead compartment. It seems like completely full might be too large?? I have 70L. Thanks !
Hey Greg, thanks for the review. The 70L version of this bag measures in at 28" x 17.5" x 13", so it might be too large to use as a carry on for most airlines. We can confirm that we have been able to use the [Black Hole Duffel Bag 55L](https://www.patagonia.com/product/black-hole-duffel-bag-55-liters/49342.html?dwvar_49342_color=CNY&cgid=luggage-black-hole-bags) which comes in at 26.7" x 15.7" x 11.8", but we can't guarantee that would be the case for all airlines. The Black Hole 40L wheeled duffel or regular duffel versions should be safe bets.
Trying to replace a 90L
It used to be that our two 90L duffels were sufficient for the family to share as needed, but when both of my teens wanted to go on the school trip to Guatemala with me, we needed a third. The date came and went without a shipping notice, and I found another color that was in stock. I ordered it too, just to be safe. They both arrived in time, and my husband is glad that he gets one now, too! I was pleasantly surprised that I was still able to fit two weeks worth of clothing (from mountain to tropical conditions), my sleeping bag, pad, and hammock with 20L less to work with. It did keep me from over-packing, but was very doable. Im definitely glad I splurged on packing cubes. I used one to keep undies and socks from floating around and the other to separate the clothes Id only need in the other location. Very happy with my 70L and actually glad I didnt get the gigunda one! The whole family prefers the backpack option to rolling bags as we are all tall and cant ever seem to control the rollers, and glad we now have 4!
I ordered four of these (one for each member of the family) in different colors. Perfect Bag - lots of room!
Purchased for daughter who sails year-round and was worried might have ordered too big (ordered 70L). It's actually the perfect size! She can fit her gear in, wear it on her back, sturdy enough to check for flights, and holds all she needs for a weekend! Plus - the red color makes it easy to spot amongst tons of black bags!
Great ski resort bag
Pack this thing right and youre good for a long trip. Something I do a lot with this bag is bring it on trips where I know I may return with more gear than I left with. Top Notch Bag, Years of Abuse but No Wear
As describe the material is tough as nails. Ive used this bag for years now, through deployments and 20+ flights, despite that it still looks band new. Love the option for turning into a back pack and have used for those longer carries. One of my best pieces of luggage.
A tough bag
This is the fifth Black Hole bag that I have purchased. Why does he buy so many? you may say. I have 5 kids and this is part of their kit when I send them off to school. The bottom line: these Black Hole bags are rugged, roomy and useful. And when you don't need them to haul your gear, you can fold it up into its own pouch and it will fit easily into your backpack and still leave room for your laptop and a change of clothes. I may just end up buying 5 more - it depends on how many grandkids I need to send off in this world. Cheers

I bought this bag a few years back now, actually mine is a 60L which is no longer in the site.... I bought it for a trip to Thailand. Bought this duffle bag with the hope to start traveling again after COVID. On its first outing the handle/side was ripped by airline. Clearly not the quality I expect from Patagonia given the price.

Great customer service, but not sure on the bag
I left this bag in my car when hiking in Utah (very hot day) and it melted in the sun. I had left the flap open so it was plastic on plastic, but seems like something that it should hold up in. No fuss on the exchange at the store, but still a bit worried on durability. Let's see how round two goes.
Thank you for the feedback on the bag, PJ! The Black Hole bags are very durable in terms of the fabric's resistance to wear and tear, as well as in hot travel conditions. We would not recommend leaving the bag open and unattended in very high temperatures in a car, rather throw a tarp or blanket over it, or place it in a shady spot if possible. We're glad to hear that the store was able to get you sorted out quickly and painlessly, and we look forward to your review after years of use!
A Bag of many uses
One of my sons was on his way to his first year of college and was loading up my car with his laundry bag stuffed with clean clothes, towels and linens. I opened the bag into it's carrier configuration and he was stunned into silence as he watched me load a semster's worth of "stuff" in the bag. I tossed it in the back of my sedan along with his record player (he likes vinyl) and a couple of pillows and off we went. I was so impressed, that I bought Black Hole Bags for all 3 of his brothers.

This thing is amazing. Packed my stuff, my wife and daughters stuff for a recent trip to CO. Survived being checked on airplane. I have a smaller capacity black hole bag from 5yrs ago and it is still like new, even with tons of travel. These bags are amazing and essential for traveling/adventuring.

Well designed duffle with easy access and durability
The duffle is super easy to use and looks wonderful. The zippers are smooth and get better with use. The shell is clean and repels water and the base of the bag is super resilient and doesn't track too much dirt. The detachable backpack straps are surprisingly comfortable and work well along with the two carrying straps on the sides.

Great duffel with 1 limitation
Received my 70L duffle recently and it is now getting the treatment with some rough overseas travel in Africa. Love that this holds so much and that it has the option to use as a backpack. It’s a little too big as a backpack when full. I wish the straps had more padding and there was a hip belt to shift the weight. But otherwise it’s a solid duffel - love that it collapses to a small pouch.

I have had a smaller Black Hole Duffel for years and use it constantly. I needed a larger one for a more extended vacation and I expect it to be just as great. These are well made, extremely resistant to wear and weather, and are very convenient. I would highly recommend these bags.
Great duffel, but lacks security
I'm very satisfied with my new duffel, except for one design flaw. You cannot secure the contents of the bag with TSA approved locks. Please note that the many of the questions in the review don't apply to duffels, so I left them blank.
