Protect the ocean so it can protect us
Our future is tied to the ocean. Its shared seas connect us through food, culture and sport. The home of amazing, abundant life, it’s also a powerful climate solution. Yet the practice of bottom trawling threatens to destroy this precious resource—bulldozing our ocean floor, undermining small-scale fisheries and deepening the climate crisis. Let's end this destructive practice, starting with an immediate ban in marine protected areas and inshore zones.

I like the overall material and durability of the duffel. Gives flexibility to fit what you and not be constrained. Love the graphic design on the side as well
We have three of these bags in our family. They are durable, good looking and hold a lot more than you would think. We have used them on multiple extended vacations and they work great. My only criticism would be the amazingly large logo on a lot of the newer Patagonia bags. Its too much.
This piece of gear is staple in our family. 55L is the perfect size for weekend trips to ski or camp. I like how the shoulder straps unbuckle for a quick release versus loosening only with other brands.
I picked up this bag for extra capacity on an international trip. This is so sturdy and well made! It worked great - and the convertibility to a backpack was so wonderful. A really good product, the only improvements for a next generation bag would be more pockets on the inside for more organisation, furthermore more pockets on the outside would help massively with making the bag more user friendly, and helping someone using the bag for backpacking (travelling) be able to get out bits of kit quicker and making items ... A great and practical travel bag. Carrying it over the shoulder or as a backpack is an excellent solution. It always fits what I need. The ideal travel companion.
Went on a week trip to Colorado, road-tripping. Needed bags for the kids clothes that would last for years of travel. Really liked the straps to convert to backpack if needed. The zippers are strong and sturdy.
Extra pockets a plus for smaller items. I am also looking forward to snowboarding trips with this bag as well!
Purchased this product on sale, it was such a great deal, the color is vibrant which I'd prefer to buy so it doesn't look alike with others while on the airplane.
Love everything about the bag EXCEPT the lack of a waist strap. The bag gets super heavy when carrying it for longer than 10 minutes and I wish it had an extra waist strap like a hiking pack would to take some of the weight off of the shoulders.

Hey Stephanie, thanks for the review. We do include dimensions on the product page so you can double check if one of our duffels would work as a carry on. Since the required dimensions vary from airline to airline, it's tough to make that call but the dimensions are there to reference. You can find them underneath the materials tab section, in a black outlined box. We find that most airlines would accept the 40L as a carry on, but we have also had some luck with the 55L. We do have a stain removal guide on our website which you can reference [here](https://www.patagonia.com/repairs/#asset-modal-holiday21-repair-stain-removal-accordian-modal). The method will change depending on the type of stain, if you have additional questions about this please connect with customer service.

The 3 dimensional Trapezoidal shape of this duffel means it packs WAY above it's rated capacity; and - oddly - the dimensions of today's 55L are greater than those of the previous 60L. But who cares? I really do love this bag. I have this one and a 40L that I'll bring with me on trips (usually one but sometimes both, depending) for dirty laundry, souvenirs, etc. I love how foldable it is but do not love having to unfold/refold it. My biggest gripe is the lack of long strap or ability to convert the backpack straps into a single long strap. I would even settle for anchor points and I'd move the long strap from my Cotopaxi 42L over. I'm not picky! Since it's my back-up bag, I really don't want to have to redo all of my packing if I don't need to in order to make this bag easier to carry.
Thank you for sharing this feedback, Cassandra. We're sharing it with our product designers. Some customers have added an aftermarket shoulder strap, clipping it to the haul handles on the ends. Exceeds expectations
Have used as hand luggage on numerous domestic and international flights, 4x4 trips, and currently use daily on deployment in Antarctica to lug gear from residence to work in (sometimes) extreme conditions. Has not failed yet.
The 55L duffel is made of high quality materials, like all Patgonia gear and clothing I have purchased. I have used this bag for weekend trips, work travel and for 10 days travel abroad. It holds whatever I need to take along. Zippers are made for heavy use. The detachable backpack straps make mobility easy. Very high value here.
Absolutely love this bag! Can pack and pack and pack it.... Will say that the new "55L" seems larger than my old 55L. Hope it will still go as a carry on. Great purchase!
Great size. I use it for work trips. I take my son to swimming classes, ski lessons and everything in between using this awesome duffel. It fits everything, it is waterproof and you can use as a backpack. I recommend this bag for any person who needs to carry lots of stuff.
I love the look and feel of the bag. Superb quality. However, surprisingly, it is missing a few obvious features:

I wanted this bag for a while and was thrilled to buy it during the Winter Sale -- it is so sturdy and it's great that it can be worn as a backpack. But there are times I just want to sling it over my shoulder, so it's really too bad there's no shoulder strap. That would make it perfect!
Love this bag for a million reasons, but most importantly its sleek design and durability put it over the top. 5/5 would recommend for all uses, work to travel.

Had for 3 years and love it! It fits a deceptively large amount of stuff so works for short or long trips- I've lived out of it for a little over a week with no issue. Fits in overhead bins and comfortable as a backpack. Only thing is I wish the water resistant material was on the bottom as well

However, it really was a terrible travel experience with this bag. I used it as a carry on, and it was not packed to the brim, just a couple if changes of clothes, small toiletries bag, swimwear, book and a pair of flip flops. It was not full at all. But, when wearing it as a backpack it was incredibly uncomfortable since everything shifted to the bottom and then bumped around as I walked. The bag straps do not easily slide over a luggage handle either, so if I wanted to roll it on top of my larger roller bag, it slid off very easily, making rolling through a crowded airport almost impossible.
And today, my back is killing me after one day of travel while trying to maneuver this unwieldy bag. This bag was a gift and it is great for my weekend trips. It holds everything I need with space left over. I like the versatility to carry it as traditional duffle or as a back pack.
Black Hole bags are awesome and rugged. They are lightweight and seem to be endless on the inside. They handle being tossed around, shoved into tight places and I've even had mine fall out of a truck on the a backroads highway. The zippers are sturdy and tight - never had one open on me and the stitching is tough. This bad will survive all kin... Read Moreds of unexpected scenarios and will last a long time. Well worth it.
Overall, like most all Patagonia products, the bag is sturdy and well made. What would have made me rate it at 5 stars would have been the addition of more nooks and crannies, like pockets, a couple on the outside, and a few inside to store those things you like to grab fast.
Great product. Used as a walk in back pack and bag for various activities plus to keep things organized in my car rather than back and forth to the house and then back to the car. Tough bag. Only issue is in back pack use there is a need to keep the straps from coming off your shoulders while s rambling over talus etc. I just tried them together on... Black hole long term review
Great bag for hauling tons of stuff. This thing has had me covered for fly fishing trips, ski trips, and everything in between. I bought it to accommodate fly rods and gear in one bag (9 foot 4 pieces are real snug, 8.5 foot 4 pieces rods fit better) and it does the job. The backpack straps are key to lugging this thing through airports.
After 10... Read More+ years of use my only gripe is that the rubberized coating is shedding off pretty bad (started about year 6).
I have several of these bags, in a variety of sizes... and just ordered a couple in the new pitch blue color that is coming soon. I love the back pack straps, make it super easy to carry multiple bags in one trip. I've used these for over a year, 2 trips a month, no snags, tears, or issues with wear. They've been perfect!
Live in Hawaii and got x3 of these bags to travel to London for world outrigger canoe sprints with my 2 teenage sons. Able to fit all our gear for a 10 day event. Able to still put in overhead carry on. Like the addition of right and left labels on shoulder straps on current bags. I had purchased a 60 L bag several years ago and really liked it and... This is my 4th purchase of a black hole bag. I have 1 for myself, 1 for my spouse and 2 were gifts. They simply cant be beat. Best duffle bag on the market bar none.
Patagonia absolutely perfected the weekend bag with the 55L Black Hole Duffel. I love the backpack straps and the internal compartments. Can't live without it :) Fits great on airplane too.
I have two sizes, one for packing myself and my kids when they were smaller and a 55L that I was able to use for myself for a 10 day trip to Italy. Couple them with packing cubes and youve got an efficient travel combo. Now that the kids are older, I purchased one for each of them so they can carry their own gear.
55 liter black with Fitz Trout. Excellent duffel. First use as a carryon for long weekend to Rocky Mountain National Park/Estes Park with hiking, fly fishing and horseback riding on the agenda. I got this bag to pack clothes and equipment for the 400 mile supported bike tour from Buffalo to Albany. Bag has plenty of space for a 2 week trip! Packed it with hot, rainy, and cold climate gear. 55L had more than enough space for the trip. Even fully packed its easy to carry as a backpack, especially for a lot of small flight jumping! Bought the wife a 55L as well since her 90L is quite large and not as easy to handle when on the go a lot.
This bag is fantastic! You can put more than enough clothes and whatever else you need. We are taking it on a two week European vacation and it holds everything. Highly recommend!! My family loved mine so much they bought their own.
I kept this bag in it's packed form for my trip back to my parent's and then unfolded it and stuffed it to use as a checked bag for my flight home. The bag still looks in new condition after being checked! This bag also makes a great weekender if that's what you're looking for.
