Protect the ocean so it can protect us
Our future is tied to the ocean. Its shared seas connect us through food, culture and sport. The home of amazing, abundant life, it’s also a powerful climate solution. Yet the practice of bottom trawling threatens to destroy this precious resource—bulldozing our ocean floor, undermining small-scale fisheries and deepening the climate crisis. Let's end this destructive practice, starting with an immediate ban in marine protected areas and inshore zones.

When I am getting dressed in the morning and I pop open my underwear drawer and see the Essential Boxers sitting there, I know its gonna be a good day. Simply put, these are the best boxers I have ever owned. They are very comfortable and they breath well.
If you are at a point in life where the appearance of your underwear and how it profiles your wedding kit is of negligible importance compared to comfort and feel, you have arrived at the essential boxer moment.
I've been wearing this style of boxers for 25 years and keep buying the same style when they wear out ... which has been about 15 years for each pair ... and make no mistake; I wear underwear (almost) all the time! A great product.
So, I've been wearing the "Essential Boxers" for over 20 years ... and these new pairs are replacing their elders that have been worn & worn & repaired & worn a long time. I've tried "other brands" but they're all lame and I'm hoping that these pairs will get me into my 80s??!!!
I am a Patagonia shoppohollic but can never support their underwear for men. They dont dry fast. Sometimes more than 24 hours. Not the old version
I bought the original essential boxers years ago and they have held up extremely well. The only risk is the waste band losing elasticity, particularly if using a dryer. We appreciate you sharing your feedback on fit, and fabric. These boxers have a regular fit design, and use a fabric blend that is 5.8-oz 95% TENCEL™ lyocell/5% spandex jersey. For [product care](https://www.patagonia.com/product-care.html), we recommend machine wash in cool water with like items, mild detergent, no bleach and no fabric softener. Not the same
Bought a few of these on sale and disappointed in the overall quality and likely durability. Like many things they are not what they used to be. The predecessors to these boxers were made of silkweight capilene and they were my all-time favorites. So comfortable and durable.

Patagonia, please bring back silkweight capilene boxers.
The clothing tags are roughly two inches long and made of a paper-like material that is uncomfortable. Since they are right on the waistband I have to cut them off with care not to damage the fabric. Other Patagonia labels use a silk-like product which works better.
I love these boxers and hate to move away from them but as cozy as the material is, it rips, and wears through extremely easily. I wear a pair of these everyday and would bet a new pair only makes it only a dozen days before they wear through. Love them but for a Patagonia product, they should certainly hold up much longer.
Thanks for the review, Tanner. We're sorry to hear that these boxers are not holding up well. We'd be happy to review them under warranty if you'd like to send them in. different material
I really liked the older version of the boxers when they were made out of the thinner Capolino type of material.
I wear Essential Boxers everyday. Comfortable waistband and cool material. Still, I preferred the older ones that used Capilene rather than newer Tencel. My Capilene boxers dry twice as fast as the Tencel ones. Important if you like to travel light, and are dependent on washing clothes at night in the sink, hoping that they are dry in the morning.
My bf had one pair of these that he would save for comfy days so I just got him a bunch so he can be comfy all the time!!!! They are his FAV! So worth it
Best underwear I have ever bought, its not customary for me to spend $35 dollars for a single pair of underwear, but after buying a single pair a few months ago, I knew I needed to buy more, they are well worth the money and then some!
Liked the fell and fit so well that I ordered two more pairs. Then after a month or two they all started to fall apart. Started at the bottom hem, then the crotch area disintegrated.
Used to really like these boxers. Now they smell strongly like a latex no matter how many times you wash them. Patagonia quality goes down every year. More recycled materials and lower quality.
Thank you so much for writing this review, Tyler! We are very sorry to hear about the smell you are encountering with these boxers. If you'd like, you can attempt to wash your items with a small amount of white vinegar and light detergent. This should help with any lingering smells these boxers may have. After nearly a decade of the old Capaline Boxers I gave the new boxers a try after a short stint with another brand that advertises as "Travel Boxers".

These are by far the best boxers I have ever bought, they are not to warm and feel some comfortable on. They are expensive but you get what you pay for, I would like to see a button on the front opening but that's something I can get done myself. 5 stars and I will definitely buy again.
I don't typically write reviews, but after this many years I have felt compelled to say something . I have been a loyal Patagonia customer for over 30 years. Read Moreil I found silk boxers and wore them for a short while but they lacked durability. Then I found Capilene boxers when I started buying Capilene underwear while skiing and fell in love with that material. I still have every piece of Capilene underclothing I ever owned and they are still being used on a daily basis. For years, I would even buy Capilene boxers for friends as Christmas presents which ultimately resulted in them purchasing more Capilene boxers for themselves. When the Capilene was no available, I purchased your next iteration (which also went the way of the dinosaur), and now most recently the Essential, with Tencel, which my wife bought for me. It reminds me of Cotton boxers I bought from Sams Club. They are soft, but they ride up, bunch up with activity, hold moisture, and lack durability. Pairs are already coming apart at seams, and the legs seem to be a bit large. I am sure that had I not had the Capilene boxers to compare them to, I would like them better, but the whole thing is just a huge disappointment. How can a company throw away a product that became the industry gold standard? I have never heard of anyone who didn't like the Capilene boxers, and yet they were discontinued and Patagonia has been struggling to find a suitable replacement since. The Capilene material is soft, wicking, does not hold odors, does not bunch up, it is durable, and has the feel of silk without the short shelf life. Sadly, after many many years as a loyal customer, I am beginning to look elsewhere for both boxers and thermals for skiing. It just makes me very sad. When it is all said and done, ALL companies must be profitable to survive, why would you leave your best horse in the stall on race day? Please bring back Capilene boxers, and the lighter weight thermal underwear.

I have been buying Patagonia boxers for over a decade now. I have several pairs of the old boxers with the capilene material they still use to make their shirts.

Then the senders came and while they weren't great they weren't bad. The material was still soft and wicking but it pills and deteriorates a little faster.
Now we have the Essential Boxers and they're the worst of the last decade. I swear up and down they don't wick as well, they bunch up, and they get uncomfortable in the field.
I can't recommend these in good conscience and I can't continue to purchase this category from Patagonia while they insist on ruining this product with worse and worse iterations when they had the greatest one ever made from already figured out.
Add insult to injury they still offer capilene in the baselayer category as leggings so it's not like they don't have the supply chain and manufacturing in place to produce them.

Super soft and comfy!
Bought these for my husband and he absolutely loves them! Not too tight...no riding up and comfortable! Score!
These are the most comfortable boxers I own and I wanted to love them but unfortunately the material just doesn't last. I have 7 pairs and every single one starts to tear before 1 year of ownership. New boxers are great. I
New boxers are great. I like the cut, not to snug, not to loose. The fabric feels great, and the prints are cool.

The lyocell fabric is soft, super breathable and lightweight, and the fit of the boxers is loose and comfortable. According to the care tag, the boxers should not be washed above 30°C, which is below recommended temperatures for underwear.
The boxers are soft but fit a little big. Unfortunately it seems like the boxers can not be both soft and durable. Each pair I have now have holes in them after only a few months. The comfort is nice but the lack of durability makes them not worth the money.

I started with one pair and now have five. They are really comfortable and well constructed. When the sweat comes on, they do a good job of wicking. They dry quickly when they get dunked while wet wading.

Definitely comfortable but with a severe durability issue
I have had four such boxers for around two years. It is true that they are comfortable for daily wear or whatever activities. I only wash them by hand, just to protect them for long lasting. Major fabric issue causes stink after first wash
I've been wearing Patagonia underwear exclusively for a couple of years now, though I've always stuck to black and grey color options. Recently I bought numerous pairs of these in various colors and ran into a major problem: they absolutely REEK if they come into contact with white vinegar.

I had one remaining unopened pair in 'Forest Floor' color so I did an experiment - I unpackaged them. They smelled perfectly normal. I then placed directly into a clean bin with a 1:1 mix of water to distilled white vinegar. Within about 15 minutes my mudroom reeked of sulfur, emanating from the pair of boxers. This wasn't a slight smell, it carried into adjacent rooms.

Hi Daryl, we're so sorry to hear you've been disappointed with these Boxers! They're designed to be wicking and breathable; it sounds like they haven't been so for you, and that stretching issue is no good either. We will reach out to you about returning them.

Comfortable
The stretch fabric is comfortable and this version of the boxer seemd to be heaviery weight material than previous versions, which is nice. Elastic waist is stronger but not too tight.
Have worn these for many years and got these to replace several pairs that had lived long useful lives. Comfortable, like they're not there. Also, wife thinks theyre cute.
I have worn the old 100% polyester capilene daily version for the last 5 years and it shows no sign of wear, and will probably last another 10 years with good care.
The new lyocell version, however, is complete rubbish and starts to wear down after only a couple washes.

TL;DR: lyocell sucks, don't buy this.
This version of patagonia boxers is a poor imitation of the capilene boxers. Why change a great product into an inferior one? I have purchased the capilene boxers for years. I tried one pair of the tencel boxers and will never buy another one.
Hi Frederick, thank you for taking the time to submit this review. It sounds like you weren't happy with the fabric of these boxers. We're sorry to hear this! We've reached out to you about options.

I'm like on my 12th pair...
I've found a product I like and am sticking with it! Most Patagonia stuff runs large...These are on the large side of "True to Size." Comfortable, breath well, and are durable.
I have been purchasing Patagonia essential boxers for at least 25 years. They remain the best, most comfortable, best fitting boxers I have ever owned. I don't even look at other brands. I have several pairs of the boxers and 2 of them have started failing along the bottom seam. I haven't sent back to Patagonia yet. I know they will repair but more annoying to have 2 of them fail the same way suggesting an issues with the design.
These are my new favorite boxers. For years I have been wearing boxer briefs and thoughts I would try these boxers. I really like them. The main selling point for me is the fabric. In fact I went back to get more pairs. Great boxers made of very soft and stretchy material. Well done, Patagonia.
These boxers are probably the most comfortable I own, however unlike other Patagonia products Im extremely disappointed with the quality. Best in class
Superb craftsmanship combined with excellent feel of material and awesome design of prints. I own a dozen of these shorts and no other.
This is a really decent boxer for casual wear. The material is quite soft and comfortable, and I like the colorful designs. However, they aren't my go-to for high output (sweaty) activities because they don't dry as quickly as one would like for a technical underwear. Best underwear ever!
Perfect item. Aside from the fly that I have to sew shut on all my Patagonia underwear.
Guess why.
Finally had to buy several more of these-last batch still going strong after 12 years but a little faded, lol..incredibly comfortable, easy drying, and virtually indestructible..
These have to be hands down the best pair of boxers I have ever owned. They are lightweight, have a nice stretch to them, and are super soft. I will definitely be investing in some more of these!!!
The boxers are very comfortable and the material feels quite silky. They are expensive and I would not have paid so much but for the information on provenance, working conditions etc
Three pair wearing out, tearing near the leg hem as others have noted, while silkweights from many years prior still wear well. The fabric is a step down. Wonder where to find something like the old silkweight?
I lost my shorts, No really, I lost ALL of my Patagonia shorts in a recent flood in southcentral Montana. In the days after the flooding I orders a couple of new pair from Patagonia. I have a few pairs of old capilene boxers (bright orange!) that are still working well to this day. Almost 10 years old. These new ones though hold more heat and are hotter to wear. Really comfortable fabric for the hot weather and cold. But I'm particularly impressed with how great they are in the desert. Thats were Im living so thats counts to me. Most comfortable underwear Ive found.

Ultra soft, super comfortable, you cant even tell you are wearing them. Thanks Patagonia!
These are some of the most comfortable boxers ever! Love the soft feel and superior breathability. Typically wear large but went with XL and happy I did.
These are simply the best boxers I have ever owned. They are comfortable, light, and breathable. I wear them to sleep, around the house, and as an everyday boxer under my pants and shorts. When I start my morning and throw these on, I know its gonna be a good day.
They do the job, but perhaps not my ideal pattern/fit
There is something a little off about the fit and pattern of these. They don't seem to hang and flow like normal boxers (or your older versions). The middle fabric panel that stretches along and between the thighs seems too tight and stretches out like a hammock, especially when you squat down, making you feel like you've got something in... Read More there. And then sometimes I have to pull the leg parts down out of my crotch after I stand up. To me, they have a fit more like boxer-briefs.
This may be only something I experience. Other guys might like the way these fit and feel. I am just relating my experience.
The pattern from years ago with three panels across the back and only one cross seam running along the inner thighs, closer to the front, seemed to feel much, much better. (I'll send you photos or an old pair if you want, haha.) If any designers read this, I hope they take a look at redesigning it and trying it on themselves through a range of movements and have other testers do the same.
Other than the pattern and fit, the material, while not as comfortable as the old Capilene, does the job, so I will use the 5 pair that I have and occasionally get a new pair each season to see if anything changes. Oh, also, I know you will not change this and it is super-picky, but I preferred when the Patagonia name was not so prominent all along the entire waistband.
I want to love these and once again have these as my go-to everyday boxers, but I am hesitant to do so at the moment.
Thanks, though, for all that you do, and all the other quality goods that you produce. Most of my wardrobe is Patagonia.

Great boxer
Soft material, nice sizing. I use these only for sleeping so I can't comment as to riding up as an undershort
I found the older capilene ones much more comfortable and lightweight. These are still somewhat comfortable but they also start to smell quicker and I wish the older ones were still available.
I have been wearing Patagonia boxers for over 15 years. The fabric has changed over the years and this version is 95% Lycocell vs. older ones that are 100% Capilene (polyester). Sooooooooooooooo SOFT
These run big, so I always use mine to sleep in. The experience is pure perfection!
The fabric falls apart at the seams in a few months even when following the care instructions for washing. These are very nice and comfy until they fall apart. The Sender version is better made but always out of stock.

Fabric wears out fast at hem seam
Very comfortable, but the fabric is not durable. In ~3 years of wearing this Men's Essential Boxer (at an average of <3 days/month) the hem seam on the front of both legs began tearing open.
