Protect the ocean so it can protect us

Our future is tied to the ocean. Its shared seas connect us through food, culture and sport. The home of amazing, abundant life, it’s also a powerful climate solution. Yet the practice of bottom trawling threatens to destroy this precious resource—bulldozing our ocean floor, undermining small-scale fisheries and deepening the climate crisis. Let's end this destructive practice, starting with an immediate ban in marine protected areas and inshore zones.

Love it just wish it had pockets!

I love this jacket and its so light. I can throw it in my backpack. I just wish it had pockets.

Perfect cool weather jacket

This is my second black Houdini jacket and I love it. It's perfect for our climate (Alabama Gulf Coast), where it can be 35 degrees one day and 70 degrees the next day. It's my go to jacket on cool days, and my Nano Puff is for cold days.

The perfect jacket

This is my 4th Houdini jacket going back to their first launch. For me, the Houdini is the perfect jacket. I originally bought it for trail running but bring it with me almost everywhere I go. It's highly breathable, but still able to ward off a gentle rain or dusting of snow. Here in Oregon the mornings can be much cooler than the afternoons,... Read More so I've taken to throwing on my Houdini as an extra layer in the morning, then tucking it in my backpack once the day warms up. Other lightweight wind/rain jackets I've tried are not as breathable. They tend to feel like I'm wearing a plastic bag. For all around day-to-day use for everything from casual wear to running and skate skiing, I love the Houdini's perfect mix of breathability and protection.

Super good running jacket

I absolutely love this jacket. Lightweight. You can foldable it so small that it fits your pocket. Strong materials and still featherlight. 5/5 jacket for runners. Im waiting next summer backpacking trips with it.

Best Windbreaker Ever

Hands down my BWF (best windbreaker forever). Arm length is perfect, hoodie just right and with a baseball cap and the hood up and zipped up a typhoon could not dislodge the hat. Couldn't recommend it more.

lightweight and super warm

This has been my go-to jacket for three bikepacking trips and countless runs. I usually wear small or medium and the medium fits perfectly. It's great in a light rain or windy conditions, and it keeps me toasty when I run, bike, or hike hard in weather as cold as 35 degrees. The magic is body heat--it holds it extremely well, especially with t... Read Morehe hood up and cinched--beneath my helmet if I'm biking or with a light merino wool cap beneath if I'm running. If I'm biking and it gets too warm, I can pack it into its smallest state (tucked into its own breast pocket) and latch it onto my rear rack with a carabiner. Unfortunately, I did that on a recent tour and it rubbed against my rear wheel until I wore a hole through the pocket into which it was tucked. Now I need to figure out how to repair the pocket, because while the Houdini is worth the price, it's too expensive to buy a second one.

Favorite garment, with limits (it doesn't breath or shed water)

I love how the Houdini packs down (though the pocket could be just a bit bigger, to make packing easier and prevent fabric snags). Great windbreaker and for low intensity activity adds surprising warmth, but it does not breath at all and is barely water resistant. I use it to warm up at beginning of cool weather runs, but shed it after 5-10 minutes... Read More and at that point it is wet inside. Have to hang it to dry when I get home. Gets wet within minutes in the slightest rain. Applying DWR helps some. Would try the Houdini Air, but my experience with old Nine Trails was the "breathable" panels don't really breath. Only pit zips would help.

Light and keeps the weather off

Really pleased with this. Very light and packs down small so really handy to grab and shove in a bag or pocket. Worn in fairly heavy rain and wind for about 20 minutes and it kept me dry and stopped the wind from chilling me down too much, so did exactly what I’d wanted.

Best Jacket for Everything

Too many years ago a friend said this jacket was the best piece of outdoor clothing he had ever owned. I finally bought one and now everyone I know owns at least one. If you are one of the few people who hasn't tried this one - just buy it.

So thin and light. I use it with a knitted sweater underneath which makes it perfect for windy autumn days.

ALL AROUND THE VERY BEST JACKET FOR BIRDING

Got the Houdini and wore it nearly every day during a 35-day birding expedition from southern California near the Mexico border to Olympic peninsula in Washington to Anchorage, Adak Island and St John's Island in the Bering Sea of Alaska. Was on 5-day pelagic boat trip 50 miles offshore and was able to layer up and down with the changing temperatures and wind. With a down vest underneath, was perfectly comfortable on Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park with low 40 F temps and howling winds. On Adak Island in the Aleutians and St Paul's Island in the Bering Sea, wore it as my outer jacket over a down jacket in 25+ mph winds and low 40's. Was fine in light rains. Got the patterned brown color which is a really cool camo color for chasing birds. I could see how this jacket might be too warm if running, but I never overheated even when slogging through 3 miles of heavy marsh in my Wellingtons. All in all, it's perfect for its intended use. Its unsurpassed for the avid birder.

Wind Proof / Everyday Jacket

This jacket is perfect for traveling or anywhere you'll need a light outer layer. It's windproof and folds into itself very neatly. Easy to throw into a carry on bag for chilly plane rides or into a back pack/hiking bag if you're unsure if it will be chilly/windy.

September 20, 2023

Waterproof and ultra light

Extremely light waterproof jacket. You barely feel it. It is is also windproof and keeps your warm. It is ideal for running/hiking without sweating too much under the material. Nice smooth central zipper. One nice pocket in the front. Wavy Blue is a really pretty color.

Light and a nice protective layer

It's a very light jacket that's great for a small rainfall or fire biking even if a little chilly. Easy to pack and folds into it's own pocket. The good is strangely big, probably to wear over a helmet, though it's not a deterrent for me.

I love this jacket. I own two of them. It's versatility is where it really shines. Multi tool of the jacket world

I had a bit of NHS back pay. I wanted to spoil myself. A wind breaker felt like a capricious bit of kit. But I'd been chilly heading out some mornings. Did my research and opted for the Houdini. I'm not saying it replaces the waterproof, I've not tested it in heavy rain. But it's an extra bit of kit that I now value as indispensable, rather than a nice to have. Cannot recommend enough. Love it.

One of my favorite Patagonia jackets

This jacket is unbelievable weighing in at 3 ounces and yet it excels at keeping the cool damp air off of me. I love wearing it on my morning walks when I just need a lightweight jacket and hood.

Great quality, very light weight

Ive used this jacket 3 or 4 times in the rain now and really like it as a summer / running jacket. Light weight and fits close. Im 6.1ft 13 stone, went for a M as L was to large. Let's talk about that tag :-/

Hi Patagonia - I have three colors of this jacket. I THOUGHT that maybe the black one I bought was faulty with the funky stand-up tag. Then I found it in a really cool burnt orange color in Crested Butte at Dragon Fly Outfitter so ... Read MoreI HAD to have it. Now, I I've read many of the reviews of the Houdini and it looks as if a lot of folks have the same gripe as me. The garment tag is placed too high on the back of the neck so that is sticks up. It's unsightly and it's annoying. I'd think this would be a simple running line change that could be in place for F23. Simply stop using the nylon tag (Hey, less plastic!) and just print the P7 Logo in it's place. Doable?

I have been a devoted Patagonia customer since 1985 - 2-3 years ago, the Houdini Jacket went to a Slim Fit. I wear a Patagonia Large for all clothing products, except the Slim Fit. Thanks for the review, Jeffrey. We're sorry to hear that you weren't a fan of our Houdini Jacket. We recommend always checking out the "Specs & Features" tab on the product page to get an idea of what to expect. Doesn't let sweat out.

Between 2010-2012 Patagonia used to make the Houdini in an ACTUALLY breathable fabric (around 35-40 cubic feet per minute (CFM.) Now it's around a 5 CFM. This means it's really only appropriate for just standing around. 40CFM is perfect for backpacking/hiking/jogging; it will stop wind but also let your sweat escape. Bring it back Patagon... Lightweight, but sturdy.

This jacket is very lightweight and versatile. It can easily be stowed away and forgotten about until you need it. When worn, it feels as well-built as I've come to expect from Patagonia. I do wish it had pockets, but there are many other models in their range that have them.

Love my Houdini!

My friend recommended this jacket to me, and I can't recommend it enough myself! It's incredibly lightweight and provides just enough warmth and weather protection (with a base layer) to get through a hike in light conditions. It's also super packable, so I bring it with me everywhere. Love it!

February 24, 2023

Perfect in the backpack

Bought this as my emergency jacket to keep in backpack on hikes, at soccer games and when traveling but because I love the fit and how light it is, I am bringing it everywhere.

This jacket is fantastic. It is a layer that I always throw in my pack and pretty much goes with me anywhere I go. Great Piece of Kit with Unfortunate Design Change

I just purchased my third iteration of the Houdini jacket, all with different designs. My first one from the early 2010 era used a more breathable and softer material, but wasnt as water resistant as the latter versions. My second Houdini served as my second skin for trail runs and ultras - wasnt as breathable as the earlier version, but the fit wa... Read Mores perfect and there were no issues with the design other than the screen printed logo peeling off over time. This most recent design retains a similar breathability/warmth as the last Houdini, however, the design/pattern is not too great. The pocket orientation should have remained horizontal instead of vertical - the pocket tends to flap out when unzipped and occasionally gets caught in the zipper when zipping up. The inner tag behind the neck also hangs exposed and upside down unless you fully zip up the jacket. This is a design flaw that should be addressed. Makes wearing the jacket a little sloppy looking and ruins the simplicity of the design. All this being said, I will always love what the Houdini was intended for and can live with the flaws of this iteration until it wears out.

Lightweight yet warm

Love this jacket. Very compact and lightweight. Perfect for the mild weather in the Southwest. I don't need a breast pocket but I hope Patagonia will add hand pockets before I die!

February 10, 2023

Would not recommend

Runs small, extremely thin. I have serious doubts it will hold up to much wear. Far too expensive for what it is. Other companies sell much more substantial windbreakers in the same price range. This jacket is comparable to jackets sold at big box department stores for half the price. Save your money.

February 9, 2023

Beautiful Product

Perfect jacket for running, layering, and everyday use.

February 9, 2023

Packable and Portable

The beauty of this thing is how light and packable it is. Not good for an all day soaker but for 30 min run in the cold rain works great. Does well in the wind over an insulating layer. Handy for spring skiing when it's 40 at the base and 20 and windy up top.

February 9, 2023

Houdini

Bought the jacket for a light stowable wind breaker. I have run in it several times, I like the light fabric and easiness to store, if needed. The sleeves seemed long for a small. The jacket doesn't breath as much as i anticipated and i have not tested in rain(knowing it is water resistant not water proof). Still like it and no regrets.

Pull a Houdini!

I took this Houdini windbreaker on my recent NOLA trip. It kept me dry and warm when it rained. It is a perfect jacket to travel with since it can be easily stowed away inside its built-in pocket. This is my new favorite travel jacket. A+!

Minimalist. Great.

The Houdini is super simple without any bells and whistles but it makes a great wind shell to throw in a daypack or running vest. I know its not waterproof but the DWR does a good job of causing light precipitation to bead up and roll off.

Incredibly light weight. Seems to trap body heat nicely. Also seems to block wind. I received as a Xmas gift so I have only used it in layers for winter walks. Excited to use in the spring and fall.

Tried and true classic

Lightweight wind protection with a full zip. It does what it needs to, and it does it well. I wear mine on trail runs over a merino long sleeve when its below freezing. It really Amps up the retained heat for such a low weight cost when ounces count. Its a staple in my backcountry pack all 4 seasons.

January 18, 2023

Light, ultra packable and versatile

This jacket is a fantastic tool for the PNW. So often you just want the wind off of you with a light breathable, non-insulating layer. This does it. However, this new one seems to collect more moisture inside during exercising on cool damp days than the last one I owned for a few years. Still dries out quick.

Almost perfect

This is one of my go-to pieces and I always keep it in my kit year round. My main problem is with the pocket, as several others here have mentioned. December 8, 2022

Poorly constructed, lacks durability

I have washed mine twice. Both washings resulted in destruction of the waist and hood cinches. I thought the fracturing of the plastic waist cinch hardware was a fluke. After the second washing the hood cinch hardware was gone. The Patagonia gear I knew and loved in the 80s and 90s seems gone.

Jacket-of-all-trades

This is my most versatile, do-anything jacket. Its wind-cutting abilities make it appropriately warm, without causing me to sweat. Its my go-to for hiking, biking, cold-weather paddle boarding, snow-shoeing and frequent golden retriever walking. It's so often needed I bought a second one. (the jacket, not the dog.)

October 10, 2022

The jacket is very light

The jacket is very light and stylish. The main problem is the pocket. There is only one tiny zippered pocket, too small for a cell phone. The pocket needs to be 5 or 6 CM deeper in order to hold a typical cell phone. Pocket is really unusable.
