I've had a couple TorrentShells(?) over the years. the most recent one started breaking down/delaminating at the back of the neck near that microfiber patch. I brought it into the local store to ask about it. The folks there said that it's important to actually wash these shells, a thing I rarely did for fear of clogging the pores with so... Read Moreap and impairing the water resistance and breathability of it. I was wrong; in fact, washing the thing helps keep it working as designed. So, in the absence of my regularly cleaning it, it began delaminating at the neck. "Reasonable wear and tear?" I asked.
"Yes," the store folks said. I said okay, and then they offered to refund the price I paid for it. What?!! I didn't go in seeking some sort of deal; I had gotten eight years' use out of it, which I thought was fair. I was super grateful for the thoughtfulness (and their standing by their product) and quickly spent the credit on this new, more bomber Granite Crest, which I understand is a technological upgrade over the TorrentShell. Though I haven't used it out on the trail yet, it looks great, feels comfy, and (I'm told) won't wear out like the TorrentShell. I look forward to a new eight years with it. One other thing: When I'm heading out (it used to be climbing; now it's backpacking, hiking, and car camping), I find myself reaching for certain gear again and again. Certain Patagonia gear. Base layers, fleeces, shorts, shirts, and outer layers like this purchase. It feels good on the body, looks sharp, and importantly, does the work advertised. That Patagonia is a company whose ethics I buy into, that they offer free repairs, that they sell re-used, worn goods on WornWear keeps me coming back to them. And urging my friends (and others) to buy for life with Patagonia. Buy this as your next shell.
Fabric feels soft and light but has held up well so far in the pnw in fall/winter for rain. This will be a change for me. My go-to shell has been the torrentshell. So far the fit and feel is great. The pack-ability is what made this shell appealing.
Fit - As all Patagonia items, the sleeves are long for me (short arms). Regular fit through the body is accurate, it is not slim nor baggy.
Construction is good - the scrim on the inside allows it to slide over layers and will likely protect the H2No coating way better than those old 2.0 coatings that were not overly durable to abrasion or sweat.

High Point - the hood is about as functional as any out there.
Anything to improve - an inside pocket would have been ideal, but for the sake of cost, weight, more stitching that needs taped, it probably makes sense...kind of?
This replaced my Spraymaster jacket that last me close to 18 years of heavy use. If this lasts as long (which is likely), I'd say its a winner.

I had an earlier version of this jacket for several (~12?) years. This updated version with new liner material and a breast pocket for my phone is just as nice and solid a pick.
For the price, I was expecting a decent weight shell. This is pretty lightweight. Given they show a picture of it packed into the pocket pouch (which it does!), I should have expected that it was thin.

I like this rain jacket a ton. I've tried a plethora of rain jackets in my life, ranging from super cheap to very expensive, and I can confidently say that this jacket is the best I've owned. I really appreciate the underarm ventilation; helps keep moisture from building up inside the jacket.

Really nice design. Rainproof and windproof even in storm conditions (tested in the Netherlands).
The sizing is pretty large. You can easily put an extra layer below for warmth.
I actually have two of these in different colors, one is my fishing jacket and gets quite dirty, so I recently purchased a second one to use daily when Im less likely to get dirty or fishy. Great for warmer weather and it has several pockets, one the hardest features to find in a quality lightweight rain shell.

My second rain jacket
For our very first trip to Ireland, me and my wife bought a Torrentshell 3L.
This coat was amazingly waterproof and durable and lasted 15 years long until the inner layer began to fell apart.
A new jacket was needed for our return to Ireland. Only this jacket was on our mind.

Take one size down if you want to layer with just the R1/R2 jackets. I will be a perfect fit with enough room to flex.
A bit short on the arms (cuffs) which I love. I don’t like to wear long arm length jackets.
The length of the jacket is enough to cover my lower back.Ideal to keep you dry.
The ventilated armpits are also one of the reasons to go and grab this jacket.
Absolutely worst rain jacket Ive ever owned. Took it out today for the first time and within an hour of being in the rain the seams started leaking. Definitely will be returning.

Perfect
I am writing this for my husband who does not write reviews. This jacket is perfect. We are so happy it uses recycled plastic, and extra happy there are no PFCs (but hope there is nothing almost as bad. ) The grey/blue color is perfect. Great replacement
I came in to have an old supercell jacket repaired that I use for cycling in raining conditions, but after the store clerk saw a lot of the seals were delaminating, they offered me store credit and suggested the granite crest as a replacement. I usually wear an M or L in Patagonia jackets but bought the XL at an on-mountain ski shop to wear over puffer/baselayers. Wore it, among other places, at Telluride and in VT (-30 below) this past season and it has been fantastic. Breathes very well and held up to precip perfectly.

It has been raining regularly in Denver all spring and its going to be one of the wettest springs in Colorado history . My new Granite Crest jacket has worked great when out walking the dog and getting caught in the rain on hikes.
I normally wear an Medium but for certain Patagonia jackets and other technical garments I prefer a Small. If you want to wear heavy/thick clothes underneath choose a roomier M. I prefer snugger fits and I use different type of gear in cold weather. Quality manufacturing is super as usual for this brand.
Liked the color. Great fit. And de extra ventilation zippers are very usefull.
Haven't used it a lot, so do not know how it will hold op in time. But I expect a lot from Patagania based on experience with other products.

I'm 193cm tall and 73kg so I decided to take size L. Before I checked XL but it was much too bulky for me. L is quite OK in width but unfortunately the sleeves are a little bit too short. 3-5cm longer would be perfect. It looks like the jacket is designed for rather fatter people.

I replaced another brand L size rain jacket with this Patagonia XL jacket. It fits perfectly with a heavy sweatshirt for warmth, and is also excellent for normal wear in rain and wind.
Patagonia produces high quality clothing and this jacket is overall a good value for money taking into consideration the low environment footprint however the cut is rather large (not close enough to the body)
Everything about this rain jacket services its purpose since I live in Portland Oregon.I hope to wear this for years to come and then pass it on to one of my kids.

Great product. I am 6 feet 2 inches, 178lbs and it fits close. This is a 3 season jacket for me in NC, prob could not layer a sweater or much else underneath. Great for hiking/running - lightweight without bulk in wrong places, zips up high to keep out the wind.
Apparently the orange color isnt the new black in this rain/wind jacket. I got the size and color I needed. I want to be visible while riding my bike or hiking. This color definitely is visible. The material works great keeping the rain and wind off I highly recommend this jacket if you find it on sale.

Its a beautiful high quality rain jacket/shell. Im 6/0 155, and due to my height usually wear a large in shirts and tees, I kinda prefer loose fit however large was too big so went with medium. This works well when wearing technical layers underneath, not so much with a hoodie :)
This jacket is windproof, yet breathable. The sleeve tabs can be adjusted easily with one hand. It is roomy enough to fit over an insulation layer. It kept me dry in the rain

I replaced my Arcteryx hardshell with this and the build, waterproof is great however im between sizes at 5'9" 185 . I wish there was a M athletic or a L short option with patagonia (pants to) so I could get coats & pants that fit.

Excellent jacket
5'9" tall and 180 pounds, a size large jacket leaves me plenty of room to layer a fleece or sweater underneath for cold weather. This Patagonia size large is slightly more roomy than the Marmot size large jacket it replaced.

I've had Patagonia rain jackets for 25yrs. I decided to get this for travel-perfect, rolls up small. The fit is so nice though that I use it for biking, scooter to work, walking in rain etc. Just super happy with it. Got the orange color on sale, and now I love the color, wasn't sure initially. Good for visibility.
Like most of my Patagonia gear this jacket is very well made and keeps me dryer than most jackets I have had from lesser expensive companies. I really like the zippers, big pockets and vents. I ordered a XL so I would have room for under layers, for a truer if I wasnt planning on layering a Large would fit me at 6 foot and 195lbs.
Living in the Northwest requires a person to own and wear different types of waterproof jackets depending on conditions. This will be my "go to" jacket for spring and summer seasons.
The matrial and design quality is top notch! The fitting perfect for me . I wanted to get a down jacket under it. The jacket folds into the top pocket .
Nice and neat . Would be nice to have a loop on the out side. To be able to secure it to a bag .
Rarely does Patagonia miss the mark with any of the clothing and gear they sell and this is no exception. It is well designed, functional and exactly what I need for the top layer on a wet, cold and blustery day.
I just got this to replace an older Patagonia shell that was stolen while I was in Patagonia, Chile!! This is comfortable, keeps out the elements and keeps the toasty warm inside. I got it in orange and I love it!
This jacket is great for the weather we get up here in the Pacific Northwest. The collar goes high and hood is large enough to fit a helmet or cinch it up for a better fit. The material is very swooshy soundy which makes it very waterproof. Pit zips are great. I am 5 ft 4 in 130 lbs and the XS fits me very well.
It sits well and has room for layering. Its sleeves are a good length without being stupid-long. Sizing worked well for me. The helmet capacity was no problem in terms of cinching it down to wear without, although not big enough to fit a bike helmet (maybe that's an unrealistic goal). So far, it's kept moderate rain off and worked fine in a shower test, but I was disappointed that, from the start, water doesn't bead off as it's supposed to across the whole jacket. Particularly on the chest & shoulders, water soaks into the outer layer. It doesn't get through the inner layer, but given the jacket is new, I'd expected better water-shedding from the description. So far, I've found H2No never quite works as it should.
That said, taking on that bit of extra weight for a 3-layer rather than 2-layer fabric is absolutely worth it for keeping the rain out.
I haven't found the jacket particularly noisy to wear, and it's not as stiff as some others.

Excellent water repellent coat with great breathability and ventilation. Lightweight but very sturdy jacket. Incredibly well built and has served me well on multi-day backpacking excursions in the rain. Excited to use this shell during ski season as well.
