I was a little afraid, that 70l would be to small for my needs, but honestly since I'm 50, the 100l would be just to heavy to carry it around. If not now, for sure in 20 years as I plan to have this product.
I ordered the 70 L black hole to compliment the other black hole bags I'm using. These are perfect for storing gear and clothing in my van having them ready for use when I need. I can toss the bag on the ground (at our dry) and feel confident the gear inside is protected.
This has to be my 6th black hole bag and now I have just about every size. These bags a so reliable! Ive been using one at work and sits In the bed of my pickup truck year round in all elements and its held up great!
I tested out this bag for the first time as a checked bag while traveling. I was able to buy a discounted bag for a color that was going out of style. The 70l is a good size for me for longer trips or to hold hiking gear. It withstood the airport (I removed the backpack straps first). It was great for a weeklong trip.
This duffel is everything you need, it even doubles as a backpack when needed. It zippers into its own pouch, but after you open it good luck getting it back in.
Great bag! I love the zipper track design that opens the top of the bag, as opposed to the more typical zipper down the middle design. When you open the zipper, you're able to access all areas of the bag. The backpack style straps are handy and add to the versatility of this bag.
I'm really impressed with the build quality of the black hole. Even the snaps on the fabric that hold the two top handles together are well made. The 70L is the perfect size.
I bought this to hold my snowboard gear during the winter and camping gear in the summer. It fits my boots, pants, jacket, helmet, etc. easily. I love that it is waterproof and has an interior pocket to hold little stuff. The backpack handles are a little awkward when you want to carry without strapping to your back but it isn't a big deal.
Black Hole bags are the best.
A friend of mine called it 'Pata-Gucci' when she first saw it, but who cares. I know what I have. This thing will last forever.
best bag in the biz. can fold it up, throw it up, pack it up, rough it up, almost waterproof if you are needing to throw on roof rack- for this price though, this bag is a STEAL and a LEGEND
When you purchase duffles for the rugged travel of throwing it into the unknown this bag is doing the job. Airplanes, backs of trucks, boats, water. Love the backpack straps and the zippers.
Zippers are essential. So far they are doing the perfect job.
Great bag the second bag I own. Only small detail which I think would be nice if the outside pocket was not integrated into the inner pouch. Love the bag.
(70L) Decided to use this bag for traveling/backpacking in SE Asia based on a couple recommendations. Cannot stress this enough when I say I should have gotten an actual backpacking pack. Read Moreaps is miserable (perhaps the wheeled version is better but then thats even more money). Very overpriced for what you get. Some of the more expensive backpacks are not even as much as this bag. It fits a ton, but then you cant carry it which defeats the purpose. In Asia now, I am highly considering ditching this bag and buying a proper backpacking bag. My fault for buying this bag, traveling is NOT what it is meant for.
We're sorry for the disappointment. It does sound like you need to find a true backpack with a frame designed for carrying all the gear on your back, properly distributing the weight throughout for the kind of traveling you're doing. The backpack straps on this duffel are merely for quick carry for a short time. And the wheeled version is well-suited for longer transit. Great duffel
Great for an overnighter or a weekend getaway. Although this bag comes with backpack straps, I think a shoulder strap would be a nice feature.
I was just looking for a simple duffel bag for all around use. This one seems good quality though Ive only used it once. The zipper feels durable and smooth. The material of the bag is tough and the handles are comfortable. The bag comes with two long straps which can act as backpack straps, but there is no traditional shoulder strap included which... Read More would have been nice. My only real complaint is the storability. The bag comes neatly packed into itself using one of the pockets as a storage pouch. Hey Brett, thanks for the review, we appreciate your feedback. We're happy to help you with the process of getting the bag back into its pocket; please reach out to [customer service](https://help.patagonia.com/s/?_gl=1*jvq3w8*_ga*MTE3MzgxOTU4OS4xNjQ3NTMxMTc0*_ga_1SYPSJZYJ5*MTY3NTcyNjQ4NC41MDEuMC4xNjc1NzI2NDg0LjAuMC4w) for further detail. First, we remove the backpack straps and unzip the front pocket from both ends, while also unzipping the top of the bag. Next, we tuck the backpack straps to the side of the duffel opposite the front pocket, and fold the sides downward, while tucking in the top flap into the bag. From there, we flip the bag so the bottom is upwards and button up the handles together across the bottom. Then, you'll want to fold the bag into thirds, and then fold that in half once more. At that point you can begin to push the bag into the pocket by going one side at a time. We realize the process is a bit complicated typed out, so we encourage you to reach out to us so we could send some pictures along with instruction.

Beautiful color, nice and big
I purchased the wax red color, which is a beautiful red color. I have the matching backpack. I purchased the 70L as a family duffle bag that can be carried on my back to free up my hands. I was recently flying home for the holidays. I had just received this Black Hole Bag and had it packed with lots of holiday goodies. Well...the airline lost my bag. I have just bought my 3rd and 4th duffel. I have been using the 40L and the 55L for about 3 months and I suspect others are reading through wondering what size they need. They have internal structure, which to me makes them easier to pack & then open & live out of than Patagonias bean-based competitors bags with a similar reputation for durability. My only gripe is that I wish there was the option to use a traditional shoulder sling.

The 70 L bag was awesome for a weeks worth of fly fishing and camping gear. I tossed it around in the back of truck beds, campsites, and airports and have not experienced a problem. Pretty water resistant as well.
So we have had this duffel bag for a month now and we think its great.
Straps are really well done and can be removed really easy. Large opening, loads of pockets.
I would definitely recommend
This is my second bag of the same size. Its the perfect size for all travels.
The only negative, I wanted the same color green as my previous one to match, but the gold is just as easy to spot in the airport.
70l black hole bag is exactly what you think it is. A well made, durable black hole. Water resistance coating really beefs up the outer protection. The bag has enough room to fit multiple shoes, all your casual clothes as well as some of my cycling or hiking gear making it the perfect bag for medium to long getaways.
Im a fan of the black hole duffel bags - I have several. Great for hauling gear and travel (the detachable shoulder straps are so helpful when zipping around an airport or navigating through buildings/hotels) . Well made and they look good, too.
Our family have been "black hole" Patagonia users for many years. I finally caved and got the 70L size (for myself!) for an upcoming trip to Italy. Was given as a high school graduation gift. The new freshman traveled with 3 weeks of clothes from Connecticut to Texas. Duffel was easy to travel through the airport. Easy to store in his room.

Our family are huge fans of the Black Hole bags. Amazing for family travel, especially with the backpack straps. Before the full line was available we had The North Face version for our kids. We live in Colorado and try to get up to the mountains as often as we can, easy to throw in the car and stack. Thank you for great options. Great bags, lightweight, and zippers work fantastic!
My sons traveled 3weeks in Europe on planes, trains, and automobiles. The 70 L bag met all specs for no extra charges. Backpack straps were awesome. Now the youngest is off to college again with his bag. It doesnt even look worn.
Id buy it again.
I originally bought this bag because I needed a travel bag that didn't have wheels because many places I went weren't wheely bag friendly (lots of dirt and sand paths or stairs) and was still easy to carry.

This bag has taken a beating throughout the US, Europe, South Africa, Botswana, and my remote field work area in Namibia. I've even used this bag in place of a proper "backpacking" pack for an overnight hike in the Black Forest in Germany.
Note for flyers: this is definitely not a carry-on-friendly size, but if you need a few weeks' worths of travel gear or you are bringing larger gear, this bag is your go-to!
I highly recommend this bag and am considering getting a smaller size for shorter trips as this (70L) one can be a little awkward to carry when it isn't very full (collapses on itself).
I bought some Black Hole Duffels for a recent trip to Switzerland and I plan to use them for another trip to Alaska soon. They are durable, pack easy, and look great. I am super happy with them and hope they last as long as others have said they do!
There are many options for duffel bags, but this one is the perfect combination of storage-space-to-price. Excellent zippers, good handles, sturdy construction. Will last for decades, likely.
The Black Hole bags are the best choice for a backpack carrying style duffel. The new lid design definitely ups the usability of these duffels and seems to "create" more space in the bag. I prefer using my 70L duffel over a suitcase for travelling on a week long trip.
Just received my bag in the mail. Very pleased with the quality of it, but was surprised by how large it is (guess they don't call it that black hole for nothing). Was curious is anybody has any experience carrying this on a plane in the overhead compartment. It seems like completely full might be too large?? I have 70L. Thanks !
Hey Greg, thanks for the review. The 70L version of this bag measures in at 28" x 17.5" x 13", so it might be too large to use as a carry on for most airlines. We can confirm that we have been able to use the [Black Hole Duffel Bag 55L](https://www.patagonia.com/product/black-hole-duffel-bag-55-liters/49342.html?dwvar_49342_color=CNY&cgid=luggage-black-hole-bags) which comes in at 26.7" x 15.7" x 11.8", but we can't guarantee that would be the case for all airlines. The Black Hole 40L wheeled duffel or regular duffel versions should be safe bets.

I left this bag in my car when hiking in Utah (very hot day) and it melted in the sun. I had left the flap open so it was plastic on plastic, but seems like something that it should hold up in. Thank you for the feedback on the bag, PJ! The Black Hole bags are very durable in terms of the fabric's resistance to wear and tear, as well as in hot travel conditions. We would not recommend leaving the bag open and unattended in very high temperatures in a car, rather throw a tarp or blanket over it, or place it in a shady spot if possible. We're glad to hear that the store was able to get you sorted out quickly and painlessly, and we look forward to your review after years of use!
