Ms Houdini Jacket

Poor and not what it looks like in the picture

Really very poor - it's not what it looks like in the picture. The material is gossamer thin... and just slightly small.. in the rain this will be stuck to your skin like tissue paper. I'm sure it's made well, but it's pretty worthless in my closet. If I had the time to get to the package store I'd return it.

Thanks for the review, Jeffrey. We're sorry to hear that you weren't a fan of our Houdini Jacket. We recommend always checking out the "Specs & Features" tab on the product page to get an idea of what to expect. The description for this product reads "Featherweight 100% recycled nylon ripstop with a PFC-free DWR finish (durable water repellent coating that does not contain perfluorinated chemicals)", so while it does have some water repellency, it can soak through if saturated. We're happy to set you up with a return, and have a conversation about what you were looking for to find you a better alternative. Doesn't let sweat out.

Between 2010-2012 Patagonia used to make the Houdini in an ACTUALLY breathable fabric (around 35-40 cubic feet per minute (CFM.) Now it's around a 5 CFM. This means it's really only appropriate for just standing around. 40CFM is perfect for backpacking/hiking/jogging; it will stop wind but also let your sweat escape. Bring it back Patagon... Lightweight, but sturdy.

This jacket is very lightweight and versatile. It can easily be stowed away and forgotten about until you need it. When worn, it feels as well-built as I've come to expect from Patagonia. I do wish it had pockets, but there are many other models in their range that have them.

March 3, 2023

Love my Houdini!

My friend recommended this jacket to me, and I can't recommend it enough myself! It's incredibly lightweight and provides just enough warmth and weather protection (with a base layer) to get through a hike in light conditions. It's also super packable, so I bring it with me everywhere. Love it!

February 24, 2023

Perfect in the backpack

Bought this as my emergency jacket to keep in backpack on hikes, at soccer games and when traveling but because I love the fit and how light it is, I am bringing it everywhere.

This jacket is fantastic. It is a layer that I always throw in my pack and pretty much goes with me anywhere I go. Great Piece of Kit with Unfortunate Design Change

I just purchased my third iteration of the Houdini jacket, all with different designs. My first one from the early 2010 era used a more breathable and softer material, but wasnt as water resistant as the latter versions. My second Houdini served as my second skin for trail runs and ultras - wasnt as breathable as the earlier version, but the fit wa... Read Mores perfect and there were no issues with the design other than the screen printed logo peeling off over time. This most recent design retains a similar breathability/warmth as the last Houdini, however, the design/pattern is not too great. The pocket orientation should have remained horizontal instead of vertical - the pocket tends to flap out when unzipped and occasionally gets caught in the zipper when zipping up. The inner tag behind the neck also hangs exposed and upside down unless you fully zip up the jacket. This is a design flaw that should be addressed. Makes wearing the jacket a little sloppy looking and ruins the simplicity of the design. All this being said, I will always love what the Houdini was intended for and can live with the flaws of this iteration until it wears out.

Lightweight yet warm

Love this jacket. Very compact and lightweight. Perfect for the mild weather in the Southwest. I don't need a breast pocket but I hope Patagonia will add hand pockets before I die!

February 10, 2023

Would not recommend

Runs small, extremely thin. I have serious doubts it will hold up to much wear. Far too expensive for what it is. Other companies sell much more substantial windbreakers in the same price range. This jacket is comparable to jackets sold at big box department stores for half the price. Save your money.

Great product

Exactly what I wanted.

February 9, 2023

Beautiful Product

Perfect jacket for running, layering, and everyday use.

February 9, 2023

Packable and Portable

The beauty of this thing is how light and packable it is. Not good for an all day soaker but for 30 min run in the cold rain works great. Does well in the wind over an insulating layer. Handy for spring skiing when it's 40 at the base and 20 and windy up top.

February 9, 2023

Bought the jacket for a light stowable wind breaker. I have run in it several times, I like the light fabric and easiness to store, if needed. The sleeves seemed long for a small. The jacket doesn't breath as much as i anticipated and i have not tested in rain(knowing it is water resistant not water proof). Still like it and no regrets.

Pull a Houdini!

I took this Houdini windbreaker on my recent NOLA trip. It kept me dry and warm when it rained. It is a perfect jacket to travel with since it can be easily stowed away inside its built-in pocket. This is my new favorite travel jacket. A+!

An all season favorite. I just wish it came with a better waist draw string.

January 21, 2023

Minimalist. Great.

The Houdini is super simple without any bells and whistles but it makes a great wind shell to throw in a daypack or running vest. I know its not waterproof but the DWR does a good job of causing light precipitation to bead up and roll off.

Incredibly light weight. Seems to trap body heat nicely. Also seems to block wind. I received as a Xmas gift so I have only used it in layers for winter walks. Excited to use in the spring and fall.

Tried and true classic

Lightweight wind protection with a full zip. It does what it needs to, and it does it well. I wear mine on trail runs over a merino long sleeve when its below freezing. It really Amps up the retained heat for such a low weight cost when ounces count. Its a staple in my backcountry pack all 4 seasons.

January 18, 2023

Light, ultra packable and versatile

This jacket is a fantastic tool for the PNW. So often you just want the wind off of you with a light breathable, non-insulating layer. This does it. However, this new one seems to collect more moisture inside during exercising on cool damp days than the last one I owned for a few years. Still dries out quick.

Almost perfect

This is one of my go-to pieces and I always keep it in my kit year round. My main problem is with the pocket, as several others here have mentioned. Poorly constructed, lacks durability

I have washed mine twice. Both washings resulted in destruction of the waist and hood cinches. I thought the fracturing of the plastic waist cinch hardware was a fluke. After the second washing the hood cinch hardware was gone. The Patagonia gear I knew and loved in the 80s and 90s seems gone.

Its my go-to for hiking, biking, cold-weather paddle boarding, snow-shoeing and frequent golden retriever walking. It's so often needed I bought a second one. (the jacket, not the dog.)

The jacket is very light

Most versatile coat I own.

My wife raved about this coat for the past year.. It is the perfect coat for wearing on the windy days at the beach, on a hike, under a life preserver while kayak or SUP, as the top layer to block the wind or to keep you dry from any light rain, and packs into nothing so super easy to always have with you.. she even layers it over her nano puff on ... Great updates on a classic

I use a Houdini for ski/rock guiding, along with other varieties of windshells. The updates that I appreciate on the 2022 version are the low profile cinch closures, that do their job while still being easy to lay/sleep on without bothering me (I don't like high profile toggles on a hood volume adjuster, for instance). Forgetting the size of my original Houdini, I used the online Patagonia size chart, and it determined I should order a Medium (I'm 180 lbs 6'0"). The Medium arrived and it was a perfect fit--if I was only wearing a tee-shirt underneath. However, sometimes I like to wear a tee-shirt and a mid-layer like a lightweight fleece, so I had to exchange the Medium for a Large. The Large fits perfectly, especially the hood, with layers underneath. I love this jacket like I loved my old Houdini, but the one suggestion I would make is the zip pocket on the front should be slightly larger to accommodate smart phones. The size on any jacket now really only accommodates a set of keys.

Love the jacket! Wish I would have bought one a long time ago. Only have a wish.... The small pocket on the chest for a key, gel, etc should be somewhere else or have its own little drawstring. Good windbreaker, poor breathability

I bought this specifically for cutting the wind while running/cycling. I was unsure about the jacket because of how thin it is. If you're buying online, it's literally thinner than paper. Imagine a bride's veil, its that thin and light. However, I was very surprised at how incredible it is at breaking the wind. I ran in 30 deg, 20-25... Read Moremph winds and I couldn't feel it at all. I was amazed. Even cycling I was impressed by how well it cut the wind. Now for the bad parts. It is insanely unbreathable. Imagine running in a trash bag. I am drenched in sweat every time I run in it. This is not necessarily a bad thing because it breaks the wind efficiently so the sweat doesn't make you cold like you'd expect. But it does leave you feeling like you just got out of the pool. Lastly, the hood is freaking stupid. It's so light that it is like a parachute behind you. Unless you keep it up (but seriously who uses a hood when running) it is very irritating. I have been tucking the hood inside the jacket so it doesn't get on my nerves. I would buy a hoodless version if it existed, but it unfortunately does not. Size wise, it does fit a bit slim, but I like that. It is not baggy or flappy. If you are a bigger person you might want to size up, but I'm 6'4 160lbs and the medium fits well (my other patagonia jacket is also a medium). Overall I'd give it 9/10 for windbreaking, 2/10 for breathability. And a -999/10 for the hood being as useful as a lifeguard at an olympic swimming event.

Not For Running!

So Ive had this jacket for about 3 years and finally decided to post a review. I dont know what the intended use is for this jacket, but it is not for running. Ive used this jacket in temps ranging from the mid 60s ... Read Moreto single digits, and in wind, rain, and snow. I specifically purchased this as a running jacket. However, the poor breathability of the fabric and complete lack of ventilation means that even in the coldest of temperatures I still wind up a sweaty mess. Often times I would have been better off not wearing the jacket at all. In cold temps you want to be able to dump the heat and evaporation, but this jacket holds it in like a plastic bag. In warmer temps the goal may be to stay dry, but even on short runs I still wind up soaked from within. What was the point of wearing it? The only area I can really see this as being useful is in a stationary setting where I would need to block the wind, but that is such a small range of use. And be warned about the hood, even in light wind it does not stay on. As for fit and construction, its typical of all Patagonia gear, perfect. Im 62 and 205 lbs. and wear a large. The fit is on point, aside from the hood. If you need to block the wind this is a fantastic jacket, but impermeability goes both ways. For active endeavors this is not the jacket to purchase.

Latest Design a Major Step Back

I own four Houdinis, purchased over the last seven years, and it's maybe my favorite clothing product ever. Over the years, the design has changed slightly the logo used to be screen-printed, but it rubs off; the ... Read Morepocket get larger to better stuff the jacket inside but the latest iteration (20192020) has been a huge disappointment. The collar seam and tag have been notched up, behind the neck, causing the tag to flip up even when the jacket it zipped up  and always when the jacket is open. I am 6' 2" and wear a Large; their product page shows a 6' 1" model wearing a Medium. It's possible if I wore the Medium the tag might sit tighter to my neck, but I prefer the Large for flexibility in motion and clothing option. My previous three Houdini's (all Larges) never had this problem, nor did I experience issues with the collar/tag, so I don't know what problem they were solving. The second major issue is the pocket, which is no longer sewn to the jacket on all sides. When the jacket is open, the pocket-pouch flaps around on your chest and is annoying. I assume there was a savings in production to reduce more stitches/seams, or it helps with packing the pouch, but it spoils the jacket. It's possible this jacket is intended only for wearing zipped up, and the smallest size possible, to reduce these two issues. But if you want to wear the Houdini as a style piece not just for active wear the new design is a bummer. My previous three Houdinis, two of which have been repaired with the Worn Wear program, and I love to death, are perfect. I hope they fix this design. If you're experiencing these problems, the Houdini Pull-over seems to be a good alternative. I just purchased one a Medium fits better here, despite wearing a Large for the zip-up and it has no pouch or tag problems. Thanks, Patagonia, for reading these reviews and for everything else you do.
