Protect the ocean so it can protect us
Our future is tied to the ocean. Its shared seas connect us through food, culture and sport. The home of amazing, abundant life, it’s also a powerful climate solution. Yet the practice of bottom trawling threatens to destroy this precious resource—bulldozing our ocean floor, undermining small-scale fisheries and deepening the climate crisis. Let's end this destructive practice, starting with an immediate ban in marine protected areas and inshore zones.

This jacket is perfect for traveling or anywhere you'll need a light outer layer. It's windproof and folds into itself very neatly. Easy to throw into a carry on bag for chilly plane rides or into a back pack/hiking bag if you're unsure if it will be chilly/windy.
Extremely light waterproof jacket. You barely feel it. It is is also windproof and keeps your warm. It is ideal for running/hiking without sweating too much under the material. Nice smooth central zipper. One nice pocket in the front. Wavy Blue is a really pretty color.

Multi tool of the jacket world
I had a bit of NHS back pay. I wanted to spoil myself. A wind breaker felt like a capricious bit of kit. But I'd been chilly heading out some mornings. Did my research and opted for the Houdini.

Went camping in the rain. Waterproof soaked through the first night. Packed up to come home, waterproof too wet to put on. I put the Houdini over my down jacket. Walked out of the mountains, in the most comfort I've ever experienced. I'm not saying it replaces the waterproof, I've not tested it in heavy rain. But it's an extra bit of kit that I now value as indispensable, rather than a nice to have.
Cannot recommend enough. Love it.
This jacket is unbelievable weighing in at 3 ounces and yet it excels at keeping the cool damp air off of me. I love wearing it on my morning walks when I just need a lightweight jacket and hood.
Ive used this jacket 3 or 4 times in the rain now and really like it as a summer / running jacket.
Light weight and fits close. Im 6.1ft 13 stone, went for a M as L was to large. I like a more fitted size for running but doesnt feel tight.
Also, very handy that it folds in to its poclet to put in your pocket or day bag.
The best lightweight jacket for running and cycling. Sizes for me with Patagonia t-shirts, base layers and thin jackets are always an S. However, fleece and any second layer I am a size M. I am 1.79m tall and thin.
Super light weight so perfect as a back up layer stashed in your pocket / rucksack should you get caught out. Offer some protection from the wind and rain.
Hi Patagonia - I have three colors of this jacket. I THOUGHT that maybe the black one I bought was faulty with the funky stand-up tag. Now, I I've read many of the reviews of the Houdini and it looks as if a lot of folks have the same gripe as me. The garment tag is placed too high on the back of the neck so that is sticks up. It's unsightly and it's annoying. I'd think this would be a simple running line change that could be in place for F23. Simply stop using the nylon tag (Hey, less plastic!) and just print the P7 Logo in it's place. Doable?
I wanted a lightweight jacket with a hood for being caught in light rain. The material of this jacket was paper thin. So thin that I thought that I would accidently tear it. The jacket was less than I expected.
Hi Dale! Thank you for writing us a review. We're really sorry to hear about the disapointment with the material. M Houdini Jacket
Super lightweight jacket just what I was looking for as part of my day hiking gear.
Great fit, nice color, super lightweight to wear at any time and easily packable even in a waist pack!
The only slight drawback is because the product is so light weight, the logo tags kept sticking out. If only this super lightweight windbreaker is tagless and has the logo imprinted on it..
This windbreakers is amazingly light weight yet durable. It packs up well taking up hardly any space. I'm 6'2''; jacket is an XL. Exactly what I wanted - single ply windbreaker with hood; great for stowing away "just in case.'' I plan to carry this biking; very small size and perfect for unexpected rain, wind, etc.
Bought this to keep around for cool days or potentially being caught in a light rain. Love how small it stuffs, add wind proofing and light water resistance and it does exactly what I hoped it would. Won't dissapoint.
Fits my husband great, packs really small which we needed. Tested the water resistance and we approved! I ordered a light blue for myself, too see-through. Stick to dark colors so you cant see through the jacket. Unless you dont care about that.
Very good at blocking the wind and keeping one warm. My previous Houdini had a neck pouch for the hood, which made the packing size not as small. This version packs down to a very small size, making ideal for traveling and hiking.
I have been a devoted Patagonia customer since 1985 - 2-3 years ago, the Houdini Jacket went to a Slim Fit. I wear a Patagonia Large for all clothing products, except the Slim Fit. I had to purchase an XXL, due solely to my shoulders and arms - and there is far too much fabric in the XXL middle and waist.

Things I don't like...
>Seriously feels like I'm wearing a fitted trash bag.
>It is the most minimal feel to the material. If you hold the material up to the light you can see a crosshatch to it. I hope that gives it a rip-stop quality. The jacket feels fragile. I'm afraid to see what pushing thru some brush will do.
>The two zippers are tiny. Like half the size of any of my other stuff. They are unusual to grab. I feel like I can only use my finger tips.
>there are also two drawstrings. they are also tiny, like 1mm elastic that feels very fragile.
>The hood is weird. WHY doesn't the hood fold into a pouch so it can be out of the way when I don't need it. 95% of the time I don't want the hood out. I hate it hanging out all the time.
>The hood also has this weird drawstring that seems to shorten the depth of the hood. I assume to help keep peripheral vision. I dont like it and I cannot figure out the locking mechanism for it.
>The little paper card that came with it says "Highly Breathable and Water Resistant." I would not define this as highly breathable. I've worn it maybe 5x temp in 50s each time. lite walking on a windy day and I find myself getting sweaty quickly. Not sweaty from over exertion ..back sweat from wearing something that doesn't breath. No venting
>Lastly, this thing was made to fold into its own breast pocket. OK... Fine. I don't know that I need it or want it but fine.. maybe I will use that one day. The down side of this is that the breast pocket hangs out when i walk with it unzipped and doesn't look nice. This really feels like lazy design. I think smart design would allow for a hood pocket, wider more comfortable cuffs, larger zippers and they would have maybe tacked velcro to the inside of the jacket to hold the pocket in place. I dont mind paying a little extra to upcycle. I dont want to pay extra just for the name. My old $50 Adidas pullover shell packed almost as small and was more comfortable and was really durable. This feels like a $40 jacket that is priced at $100 because of the name.

Who is this cut for?
For years now, Patagonia tops have fit tight in the shoulders and loose in the torso. The Houdini is suffering from it now too. Who exactly is that type of cut designed for, I wonder? Lightweight, but sturdy.
This jacket is very lightweight and versatile. It can easily be stowed away and forgotten about until you need it. When worn, it feels as well-built as I've come to expect from Patagonia. I do wish it had pockets, but there are many other models in their range that have them.
My friend recommended this jacket to me, and I can't recommend it enough myself! It's incredibly lightweight and provides just enough warmth and weather protection (with a base layer) to get through a hike in light conditions. It's also super packable, so I bring it with me everywhere. Love it!
Bought this as my emergency jacket to keep in backpack on hikes, at soccer games and when traveling but because I love the fit and how light it is, I am bringing it everywhere.
This jacket is fantastic. It is a layer that I always throw in my pack and pretty much goes with me anywhere I go. I just purchased my third iteration of the Houdini jacket, all with different designs. Read Mores perfect and there were no issues with the design other than the screen printed logo peeling off over time. This most recent design retains a similar breathability/warmth as the last Houdini, however, the design/pattern is not too great. The pocket orientation should have remained horizontal instead of vertical - the pocket tends to flap out when unzipped and occasionally gets caught in the zipper when zipping up. The inner tag behind the neck also hangs exposed and upside down unless you fully zip up the jacket. This is a design flaw that should be addressed. Makes wearing the jacket a little sloppy looking and ruins the simplicity of the design. All this being said, I will always love what the Houdini was intended for and can live with the flaws of this iteration until it wears out.

Lightweight yet warm
Love this jacket. Very compact and lightweight. Perfect for the mild weather in the Southwest. I don't need a breast pocket but I hope Patagonia will add hand pockets before I die!
Runs small, extremely thin. I have serious doubts it will hold up to much wear. Far too expensive for what it is. Other companies sell much more substantial windbreakers in the same price range. This jacket is comparable to jackets sold at big box department stores for half the price. Save your money.

We're sorry it wasn't what you were looking for; if you haven't done so already, we'll be happy to help you [return](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html) it.
The beauty of this thing is how light and packable it is. Not good for an all day soaker but for 30 min run in the cold rain works great. Does well in the wind over an insulating layer. Handy for spring skiing when it's 40 at the base and 20 and windy up top.
Bought the jacket for a light stowable wind breaker. I have run in it several times, I like the light fabric and easiness to store, if needed. The sleeves seemed long for a small. The jacket doesn't breath as much as i anticipated and i have not tested in rain(knowing it is water resistant not water proof). Still like it and no regrets.
I took this Houdini windbreaker on my recent NOLA trip. It kept me dry and warm when it rained. It is a perfect jacket to travel with since it can be easily stowed away inside its built-in pocket. This is my new favorite travel jacket. A+!
The Houdini is super simple without any bells and whistles but it makes a great wind shell to throw in a daypack or running vest. I know its not waterproof but the DWR does a good job of causing light precipitation to bead up and roll off.
Incredibly light weight. Seems to trap body heat nicely. Also seems to block wind. I received as a Xmas gift so I have only used it in layers for winter walks. Excited to use in the spring and fall.
Lightweight wind protection with a full zip. It does what it needs to, and it does it well. I wear mine on trail runs over a merino long sleeve when its below freezing. It really Amps up the retained heat for such a low weight cost when ounces count. Its a staple in my backcountry pack all 4 seasons.
This jacket is a fantastic tool for the PNW. So often you just want the wind off of you with a light breathable, non-insulating layer. This does it. However, this new one seems to collect more moisture inside during exercising on cool damp days than the last one I owned for a few years. Still dries out quick.
This is one of my go-to pieces and I always keep it in my kit year round. My main problem is with the pocket, as several others here have mentioned. Always with me
I love the houdini. I take it everywhere I go for its ability to lock in heat and shell out the wind. I can throw it on over a tshirt or a jacket easily to add some warmth. It also looks great!
I have washed mine twice. Both washings resulted in destruction of the waist and hood cinches. I thought the fracturing of the plastic waist cinch hardware was a fluke. After the second washing the hood cinch hardware was gone. The Patagonia gear I knew and loved in the 80s and 90s seems gone.
We're sorry to hear your Houdini hasn't held up as it should, Matthew! If it was washed in cool water in a gentle cycle and dried on low heat this shouldn't have happened. We will reach out to you with some options.

I love the new XXL. I had the slim fitting XL and it was just too snug in the shoulders. Ive been a gym rat for years and my chest and shoulders are hard to fit. Now the XXL fits my 48 inch chest comfortably. Good going Patagonia
This is my most versatile, do-anything jacket. Its wind-cutting abilities make it appropriately warm, without causing me to sweat. Its my go-to for hiking, biking, cold-weather paddle boarding, snow-shoeing and frequent golden retriever walking. It's so often needed I bought a second one. (the jacket, not the dog.)
The jacket is very light and stylish. The main problem is the pocket. There is only one tiny zippered pocket, too small for a cell phone. The pocket needs to be 5 or 6 CM deeper in order to hold a typical cell phone. Pocket is really unusable.
Hey Joseph, thanks for the feedback. We'll inform our product team of your thoughts. The chest pocket also works as a stuff sack for the whole jacket, so it can pack down small. Wore this on a recent trip to Seoul in the summer where it was super hot and humid and rainy. This jacket was great for keeping me dry without being too heavy or warm. I tried both the XL and the XXL (I'm usually an XL), and opted to go for the larger size just because its a jacket and wanted a slightly looser fit over my clothes.

We carry one in each of our daypacks for mtb, hiking and climbing! We start out the adventure with it and keep it when we lunch or break. It feels like a buddy on a trip! I can not imagine an adventure with out it four seasons and all reasons! K&K
Pros:
-you can barely feel it on
-provides adequate wind protection
-works well for layering
-adjustable hood
Cons:
-definitely not waterproof/water-resistant
-only one chest pocket
???:
-questionable durability but that will only show throughout the time of using

This may be the most functional piece I own. So lightweight. I wore it on a windy and sprinkling morning. It cut the wind and kept the rain off. Its not a Torrentshell and isnt supposed to be - keeps a small drizzle at bay when you need it to. The hood cinch is great in the wind.

This lightweight jacket is a staple in my day and overnight pack. I have two Houdini's and I consider them an important part of my outdoor gear. More than just a windbreaker for me.
This summer I took a dive into fly fishing and I'm glad I did. Being that the best time to fly fish is in the evening, I was being eaten alive by mosquitoes. I bought this windbreaker because its made out of nylon and stops the mosquitoes from being able to bite. Although I would have preferred a different color, gray is decent neutral color f... For the reasons I bought it for, I have been nothing but impressed and I'm thankful that bought this product.
A very thin windbreaker that can take a few drops of rain. Just what I was looking for.
Would have been nice with something that holds down the hood. It blows up like an extra head in the wind.
This is my fourth one. I love them and use them mostly as a layering piece on a hike or when Im fishing. I find they cut the wind really well. My previous ones lacked the hood. I like the addition of the hood.
Two weeks in the Whites of NH in mid-summer-this kept the stinkers off and provided the exact protection desired. It will now sit as a staple in my frisbee bucket. It is a trim cut, not a problem here but if your built a bit, size up.
The weight of the windbreaker is great, almost can't feel it. My only complaint is the lack of pockets. I like to have one or two pockets in all my jackets.
Extremely light, windproof, water resistant, packs small
Very happy with this - it's windproof and water resistant, packs into the chest pocket and weighs nothing. Haven't worn it out in the mountains yet, but I'm confident it'll perform well. Is a little roomier than I was expecting for a medium 'slim-fit' (70kg at 6').
Thin, breathable, and surprisingly warm jacket when fully zipped
The jacket fits well but it is too high under the arms and the shoulders, and also it suffers from the same defect the Torrentshell suffered before, it does not have any structure on the collar, it is just a loose fabric that drops on your shoulders, exposing the tag in the back and looking messy and unstylish. I wish this style of jacket can be of... Read Morefered with a collar like the Variable Jacket, and cut lower under the arms, and on the shoulder to make it more comfortable, especially for guys who have broad shoulders and a little bit of thick muscular arms. In sum, this jacket can be improved so it can be more versatile by having a structured collar that can hide the hoodie (similar to the Variable Jacket) and to be a bit more generous under the arms and on the shoulder drop. I like to see this jacket be offered in Purple or Burgundy, and in other colors especially in pastel or earth tone hues that mimic nature.

I agree with reviewer Ben about the garment tag at the neck being too bulky for this very light fabric. It's pretty annoying and unsightly because it turns out when you wear it with the hood down. Otherwise, this jacket is just what I wanted for a super-lightweight wind breaker for travel, cool hikes, etc. Fit is great. Sadly, returning to the... Read More dealer.
I just finished a 3 year trip throughout Europe and North Africa and this jacket was indispensable throughout. It is light, packable, water resistant, and blocks the wind well. It works as a stand-a-lone jacket on the cool summer nights and when coupled with a few layers, works to block the wind during the winter.
My only problem with this jacket is not losing it because i take it with me everywhere and wear it all the time. It's is the perfect weight to just add some wind protection for a walk to the pub or a morning hike....
Bought for a trip to Europe- great decision. So easy to pack, just the right amount of light warmth & rain cover. Orange color is nice. Definitely a slimmer fit, order up if needed.

Very warm and versatile
I have purchased Patagonia products since the 1970s. Always an excellent product.
The Houdini is an amazing jacket. Its incredibly light and flexible. Its perfect for hikes with elevation, as it provides insulation but you never get too hot. It also provides a little protection from the rain.
The tag on the back is a deal breaker though. If you wear this jacket with the hood down, the fabric has so little rigidity that the tag... Read More flips the very top portion of the jacket inside out. It is incredibly annoying, to the point that I dont enjoy wearing the jacket unless the hood is up. A smaller or printed tag seems like it would be an easy solution.
I oscillate between small and medium in Patagonia but this jacket is definitely smaller than most of their jackets so size up.
Hello Ben! Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. We're really sorry to hear about the irritation that the tag causes. This is great feedback, and we'll share it with our design crew. Too light and material too thin
Expected jacket to be light, but the material is extremely thin that a simple snag I think will tear or pierce it. I wouldve opted for a different one had I know this.
Hi Berto, the Houdini Jacket is a lightweight weather-resistant windbreaker that’s great for high-output activities. Most versatile coat I own.
My wife raved about this coat for the past year.. It is the perfect coat for wearing on the windy days at the beach, on a hike, under a life preserver while kayak or SUP, as the top layer to block the wind or to keep you dry from any light rain, and packs into nothing so super easy to always have with you.. she even layers it over her nano puff on ... I highly recommend.
I normally wear a large and I had to do an XL which is not a big deal at all. But every other Patagonia garment I have is large. This is so lightweight and packable. I would say it is rain resistant. more so than rain proof. But if you need a light rain resistant coat this is it. I love it. I live in the Pacific NW and sometimes it is just drizzly.... Excellent windbreaker. Only recommendation is that if you intend to use it as a outer layer windbreaker for ski touring you may want to consider one size larger. Otherwise fits great.
I had a windbreaker and I thought it was lightweight until I got this one! I was actually shocked at how thin it was and was anxious to see how it worked, especially since the price was a little steep. It did not disappoint! Loved the jacket so much I bought my husband one and he is as big a fan as I am. Havent been in the rain with it so I cant speak to the water resistant coating but even if it didnt have that feature I would still love it!
I expected more out of this jacket, fabric is very light. I do not believe it will protect much in wind or a light rain. I would not have purchased it if I knew this before hand .

Great jacket but needs improvement.
The Houdini jacket is a great value for the price. The jacket lasts a very long time. I love these Jackets. I own 2. Black for everyday use and hiking and orange for my bike rides. It packs down and fits easily into the pocket of my bike jersey and protects me from the wind and chill during my descents. Thank you, Patagonia, for your the fantastic quality and thoughtful design.
I've been using Hoodini's for like 15+ years. This version fits trimmer. Such a good packable windbreaker, just wish it had another pocket option
AWESOME jacket. I use it for running. I stuff it in my pocket when I'm unsure of the weather and run errands too. It's not water proof but I found it actually holds up well. I just wish it had some simple zip pockets on the side.

I think everyone should own one of these.
Love the Houdini windshell which I use primarily for fishing in a kickboat and hiking. It's an excellent wind layer which is super light and goes in the pack everytime.
I use a Houdini for ski/rock guiding, along with other varieties of windshells. The updates that I appreciate on the 2022 version are the low profile cinch closures, that do their job while still being easy to lay/sleep on without bothering me (I don't like high profile toggles on a hood volume adjuster, for instance). I also like the added to... Read Morerso length over my previous (2016?) model, and the addition of a longer zipper pull on the front zip, an easy but annoying mod I had to make myself on my previous Houdini. My family love the Houdini. We have them in different colors. Great for traveling! Good to wear over a sweater as a windbreaker and keep heat in as well as under a jacket for extra warmth. LOVE THEM!
I am 5 ft 9 in 165 lbs., and always buy medium tops. The Houdini Windbreaker pairs perfectly with my same sized hooded R1, and is perfect of my go-to light weight travel kit.
