Rios Libres: Video Blogs 2 & 3 plus Next Steps

When last we heard from team Rios Libres, Craig Childs summed up their journey to Patagonia in a beautiful post called “The Places In Between.” Now that the team is home, work has begun on a film highlighting their trip and opposition to plans that would dam the Rio Baker and Rio Pascua. The two videos in this post will give you a taste of the Rio Baker’s magnificence and what to expect from the film when it debuts in October.

We asked James Q Martin, the photographer for Rios Libres, to share some updates from the team and what the future holds for the project:

Craig’s recent story in the LA Times mentions his time in Patagonia with our team and demonstrates his amazing ability to perfectly capture a moment, and an issue. Craig is also beginning to speak about the trip in front of audiences throughout the west. Here are some of his upcoming engagements where he will tell the story of our journey south and why these fragile and rich lands should be saved.

The movie is going to debut at the Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival in October 2010. We are planning an ‘environmental night’ to kick off the festival where we will not only debut the film, but also have appearances and talks by Craig Childs and Timmy O’Neill (the stars of the movie). We are also planning to promote discussion and learning by having a panel of experts on dams and their impacts.

Other members of the team are busy doing their thing out in the world. Chris Kassar is preparing for her trip to Africa to help those in need as part of 3 Peaks 3 Weeks. Timmy and I will be meeting up in Carbondale for the 5 Point Film Festival. Timmy is the emcee of the event and my photos were used to inspire the spirit of the festival. Ed George is heading to a film festival in Hawaii and Denise Stilley is working hard in her production studio on this project and another humanitarian effort she did in Ecuador.
