Protect the ocean so it can protect us
Our future is tied to the ocean. Its shared seas connect us through food, culture and sport. The home of amazing, abundant life, it’s also a powerful climate solution. Yet the practice of bottom trawling threatens to destroy this precious resource—bulldozing our ocean floor, undermining small-scale fisheries and deepening the climate crisis. Let's end this destructive practice, starting with an immediate ban in marine protected areas and inshore zones.

This is my new favorite. It's warm, but not too warm. I think once it gets below 50 degrees I'll reach for something heavier, but it breaths SO well and layers great. It's my new go-to piece of clothing
Dear Patagonia

Worn to work pretty much
Worn to work pretty much everyday. Smart and practical.
Ive waited about a year to write this review because I wanted to give this product a fair chance. I want to preface that this Is mostly a comparison to my absolutely favorite Patagonia product, the R1 fleece. Ive owned my current R1 for a little over 5 years and it is my favorite article of clothing. Around the house, anytime the weather cools off ... Read Moreoutside, any chance I get. I wear my R1 to the point that my wife has mentioned multiple times I need to stop because it appears in so many pictures of me and our family that people will think its the only thing I own. I bought the R1 air last year to try and least give myself another option and after a year it gets worn rarely and if given the choice I will always put the R1 on instead. Some benefits to the Air version: I would say it looks more casual and less technical than the R1, much easier to pull off wearing it to a casual office day over a polo. Thats about it in my opinion. It offers very little stretch compared to the R1 and has always felt a little tight due to the lack of flex. The sleeves lack any elasticity and therefore whenever I went to pull them up I constantly have to adjust compared to the R1 which really stays. I would also say, and again personal preference, I find the original grid pattern to be softer and more appealing against the skin than the Air. The lack of stretch also hurts this piece whenever a true base layer (usually a Smartwool 150) is required underneath. The fit is so tight that it feels almost suffocating and I find movement is also hindered.
I think in certain casual scenarios this is a great addition to Patagonias line, but in my opinion I will continue to reach for my tried and true R1 every chance I get. Sorry to my wife it appears it will be in pictures for many years to come.
I love how warm and soft this is! The fit is a bit slim though. The model on line was 6’ something, wearing a medium. It looked like it fit loosely. I’m 5’8” 180 and I would call the fit snug. Laugh if you want. Yet a large version is was too big. It’s a slim fit for sure. Like I said I love the instant warmth.
Hey Steven, thanks for the feedback! You're correct, this zip-neck does have a slim fit. A very good midlayer
Not much to say as it was not used yet for skiing. The material is very soft and pleasant. It is rather light but looks like it will bring enough heat especially when active. Difficult to evaluate breathability but it looks top notch and construction quality is good and it should be long lasting.
I have owned many Patagonia garments over the years from various product lines. I continue to find the R1 range to be the most functional garments I own. I use the Air version for pajamas, lounging, casual wear, hiking, cycling, and running. The Air series is very informal due to the wavy fabric, so I wouldn't necessarily wear this to work.
... Read MoreTo the design team: the pocket is about 1/2" too small in both dimensions! I would wager that over half of prospective buyers of the R1 will own an iPhone. I own a standard size iPhone and do not use a case. I have to really shimmy it into the pocket for it to fit. Any user with a case, Max sized phone, or Android flagship (e.g. Pixel) will be out of luck. This is not a deal breaker for me, but it certainly will be for some users.
I bought this last year for skiing and used it a bunch last season in Colorado as a base layer. Loved how it's thin enough to feel light but also thick enough not to need a mid layer on most days. Front pocket is useful and long neck keeps the wind & snow out. Really liking this R1-1/2 zip pullover fleece!
I ordered Mens size XS (usually women S) because I like outside chest pocket for my phone when Im skiing or doing other activities but this pocket is too small to fit my iphone 14 (not even Pro size) R1 pullover and Mens Better Sweater (I ordered Mens because I like outside chest pocket) has large pockets and Im very happy about it.
Other than the... Read More size of the pocket Im very happy with this top. Very soft and nice fit! I cant wait to wear it this winter!
This 1/4 zip is wonderfully soft, good colors, good around the neck and a nice fit for a slim guy like me. But, the chest pocket is too small for my iPhone Pro. This is not the Max version of the phone so I was surprised it did not fit. Unfortunately that was a deal breaker for me. If that is not a concern for you, go for it.
Hi Ted! Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. We're sorry to hear about the disapointment with the size of the pocket. What one comes to expect
Great fit, fabric and style.
Easy to wash and wear.
Patagonia never disappoints.
Size would be good as a base layer. But wanted it to fit over a t-shirt sized base layer.
Customer service was fantastic on return and reorder. Still waiting for XLg but expect perfection
Great piece for casual wear or as a mid layer.
Really love the fit and the sleeve length is nice. I really dislike short sleeves.
The fabric is awesome, make more with this stuff...
I have 6 different colors of this pullover. I love the design and quality of it. Love the contrast between the chest pocket color, zippers and the rest. It's warm in non-windy weather and you can wear it by itself. If it's windy outside, I recommend wearing a jacket on top of it. It's slim fit so go up a size.
I like the pullover and it fits the description of it. my only problem with it and almost every other pullover I have is that it is hard to get into and out of because the interior of the garment catches on whatever is underneath it. I wish you would design a fleece with a slick, satiny inner lining that doesnt hang up when you take it off and on.
It is light, breathable, and doesn't feel stuffy, making it perfect for active pursuits. The sizing is true to fit, with a slim cut that's comfortable without being too tight. Overall, it's a favorite choice in my pack and a reliable option for anyone looking for a high-quality pullover.
This jacket continues to amaze me in its ability to keep my Corr at just the right temperature. Whether I am skiing, volunteer patrolling, relaxing and hanging outside at the mountain on a cold day or hiking in 50° temps this jacket seems to be the right layer. Its ability to keep me warm but not too warm is exceptional. Its always just right!
Reviews mentioned it runs small. I'm usually a small, rarely a medium but sized up and it's pretty prefect, maybe a tad long in the sleeve, but extra length in the body is nice for keeping it tucked in. A plea to Patagonia though: PLEASE do a V2 of this product with the 'R' removed from the left forearm. It's just unnecessary, and adds nothing. If it was any more visible it would entirely ruin the otherwise subtle look of the product which is what makes it so versatile for those of us who are not buying purely for sport.
There was a lot of time spent researching which layer and brand to go with for a layer top like this and the R1 Air 1/2 zip fleece has totally exceeded any and all expectations. I don't think my wife has seen me around the house, or running errands, without it on. I bought this to complete my kit for sport climbing this season and I didn'... Read Moret take it off the entire weekend on a recent trip to New Jack City and wear it to the climbing gym every night. The close, athletic fit was precisely what I was looking for to put over a shirt and under a light puff jacket. It is well insulated, but breathes too. The half zip lets you dump heat and the high neck keeps you snug and warm on a route when fully zipped up. You will not regret this purchase.
Love love this top, my hubby got one and he loves it too . Its great for all the adventures we do , thank you to the shop staff for their recommendations, they were super helpful.
Warm and slim. Wear with a baselayer and downhill ski in 30 degrees weather no problem. Odor (like smokey smells in restaurants) accumulates pretty quickly but that's a small downside!
At age seventy-four, I'm feeling more of a need to be comfortable when I'm out hiking or working outside. With a base layer or two underneath and a shell on top, I'm in good shape when the wind-ch... Read Moreill is in the teens.
Having good gear from Patagonia has raised my enjoyment by lot, and as a bonus it supports a great company.
One of Patagonia's best products. It is warm, comfortable - even over a broad temperature range. It layers really well under rain shells and winter parkas.
This fleece pullover is one of my essentials. It's much warmer than you would expect, while also being very lightweight. I highly recommend for on the go activities.
This piece is replacing a 25-year old R1 that has been put through the wringer. I like the style and functionality of the new one. The old one is still going, but looks a little worse for; whereas the new one can even go to the office.
The good: yes, its toasty warm. Sizing: as many others have stated, it runs a bit small. I can go with either a medium or large depending on the cut and for this garment, the Large is a good slim fit without being snug on me.
Pocket: I can fit an iphone SE 2020 (iphone 6 form factor) into it but its a tight fit and getting it out requires a tighter... Read More squeeze through the zipper than seems advisable... but you can do it. Any bigger phone is a no-go.
The not-so-good: The zig-zag pattern in the fabric is made by having fleece in that pattern with spaces in between. The 'spaces' are nothing but the fine mesh substrate that the fleece is connected to. Hold it up to the light and you can see through the mesh like gauze. After 3 wearings - the fleece is pilling badly where it rubs against itself like the sides of the torso and undersides of the sleeves. It already looks a year old after having it 6 days. I'll be returning it - perhaps the pilling would stop where it is, I don't know, but the fabric design just seems too fragile to last years like most Patagonia products.
Great layering piece on the slopes and the perfect top for heading out for drinks and dinner. Only wish is that it was an inch or two longer in the body.
Thanks for the feedback, Derric. We'll notify our web team of the color depiction issue. If you'd like to exchange the fleece out for a different color, click [here](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html).
Very warm when compared to my old R1 and R3. The weight to warmth ratio reminds me of down. It takes a minute for the heat to become noticeable, but then you feel it. Dumping heat is easy with the half zip.
I've been wearing a R1 half zip for the past 10 years and it was time to upgrade. I'm 6'4" 195lb so the fit can be a bit tricky. The XL works great, not loose but not snug and the arms are perfect. Very warm under a shell and great by itself, very happy I made the jump
Exactly what I was looking for . Thin but warm. Went snowboarding on a 20° day. Only wore a 1st layer then this R1 fleece and my shell jacket and was comfortable all day. Perfect!
I ordered this for another layer while skiing but also for hiking and going to work. It very comfortable, length is good, not too long, not too short, sleeve length also good. Comfortable on my skin and really warm for the weight, I bought the green, nice looking, I'll probably buy another one next year.
I absolutely love this pullover. Its so soft and comfortable and looks great. I am 6-1 195lbs and the medium is a little tight. You need to make this 1/4 zip version with a hood Patagonia!! That would be awesome!!
This is hands down my favorite midlayer. Warm, but not hot. Trim fit, but not restrictive. Breathes well. I really like that it does *not* have thumbholes or the overly long sleeves needed for them. The thick, standup collar is just the right height. Overall, this top is darn near perfect.
5'7" 157 lbs, 38" chest, got the size small and it fits slim as expected, almost a baselayer. Length is fine to me. The pit area may be too snug, but no surprise for a technical piece. I layer a light t-shirt under all the time. My warm and breathable mid-layer.

Incredibly warm and comfortable but the colour online is significantly different than in real life
This is very comfortable, light, warm and durable. I don't wear it though because the colour I ordered was much darker and brighter online than in real life and I absolutely hate the light blue it is

Daily driver
I love these fleece. I use them as a base layer/daily wear all winter. Extremely comfortable. Wicks perspiration like crazy when hiking. Warm. Soft.

This my 3rd one. They're so soft and warm, but not itchy like wool sweaters. I have worn these to work under a sport coat and also to the golf course as a stand alone piece.
Awesome piece! I stated "runs small" but it's a tech fleece, it's close to the body as it should for active scenarios. Truly love it. Breathable yet light and warm
Nice item, but as others have mentioned the chest pocket is too small to be useful. Definitely a design mistake. I'm not sure why there has been a trend toward "slim fit" sizing, but I do find it unrealistic considering that everyone isn't a rock climber or 25 years old.
Great addition to my everyday kit for the mountain. Pairs well alone under a hard shell or under a mid-layer on the coldest days. Fit is spot on, however the chest pocket could be made a touch taller to allow use with average size phone.
I've been buying Patagonia for 40 years, and I'm always impressed with the functionality of the gear.

Now my wife wants one!
The R1 runs small I had to exchange and go up a size.
Overall the product is warm however it is not wind resistant. One can cool off very fast if not moving.
Overall a good product for active pursuits
It's not too often I try something on and am blown away by how awesome it is all around, but this is one of those items for me. Love it!
From the office to the trail to the ski lodge its the best! Warm, comfy, professional but casual!
The mens top was too small by two sizes (US). The top was too short (to tuck in). The color was an ugly baby poo green instead of a plum grey. The band at the waist and sleeve is cheep and will not hold up. All in all a cheap $5 top that is very ugly and will fall apart during any active sport.

R1*Air Great Fabric
very comfortable on a daily basis, wicks well, much preferred over original R1 with my activities
Great as a base layer for strenuous exercise in the cold, but stylish enough to wear to work (for me, in a classroom). I am 205 and 6-1, and the Large fits snug but not so tight I cant wear a light shirt under it.
I ended up buying multiple colors because the fit, warmth, versatility, and the wear post-washing is so good on this Garment. I will wear it over a t-shirt, under a down sweater, and then wear it on the mountain as a layer in single-digit weather.
I ended up buying multiple colors becuase the fit, warmth, versatility and wear is so good on this Garment. I will wear it around over a t-shirt, under a down sweater and then wear it on the mountain as a layer in single-digit weather.
I intended to use this for mountain biking but it was too warm. It's very comfortable and reminds me of sweaters past (haven't owned a sweater in 20 years). Only small dig is the breast pocket.. too small.
Love the fit, texture, and finish. A lot of patagonia stuff is too baggy for me since I'm tall and slim. This fit is perfect- looks and feels like a higher quality fleece layer.
Not my first rodeo with this amazing piece of clothing. R1 is a solid, comfortable, temperature regulating, and durable layer. Almost every activity I do includes wearing an R1 version. Love this new color. Terry
Great item. My second that I have purchased. Only comment is to perhaps consider a wee bit larger chest pocket to fit a "normal size" smart phone, Otherwise great piece!!
I have several R1 items and find this the R1 Air to be another very good product. I wear it over a Capiliene base layer during hikes into remote fishing locations. This product works perfectly to keep my upper body warm on long walks with my dog in cold or rainy temperatures. But it came without any care instructions. Wash temperature? Drying? I am being extra cautious as I use it daily but would rather include it with normal loads if no harm would result.

Luxury Warmth!
This fleece runs small. I usually wear a medium, and it fits a bit snug. For me, Im using over a liner shirt (capilene) in shop and garage and even indoors when its cold. Its incredibly comfy and warm, especially around the neck which I like as the capilene layer shirts are low-neck. Luxary warmth!
Initially the product never got delivered and i was a bit bummed thinking the process to get a replacement would be long. NOT THE CASE! Reached out via twitter and was taken care of immediately, great customer service. As for the product its warm, fits nice and snug and has some style. Overall great!
This is a great midlayer. I have two and they're both in heavy rotation from fall to spring. Shines as a midlayer skiing or mountain/fat biking as well as a casual wear. Read Moree; be aware that it's more on the trim side rather than loose. Zips work well and sleeves are a perfect length. I'm a huge fan of two tone color schemes and encourage Patagonia to include more of these in future offerings. Highly recommended.
This is the 4th R1 I have bought- (lost one) the fit is better less baggy than previous model but tiny chest pocket is pointless - whats it for? Previously they had a deep chest pocket - useful in a meeting, on a mountain or crossing the Gobi-
Worn this about a half dozen times in temps down to about 11 degrees. Works so great! Warm mid-layer, super soft and fits me really well. I am fairly broad in the shoulders but it isn't too tight. Really like this!
I love this new baselayer. It is super warm, light and mobile. I bought a large and extra large and wear them for ranch work in the PNW, skiing just about everything. I recently wore it solo every day for a week in 40° PNW rainy weather and it was perfect. My favorite baselayer all of them.
I've only worn this a few times since purchasing. It looks nice and keeps you extremely warm. I wore only a cotton t shirt underneath with temps in the 50s & sunny. The few times I did wear it for walking in the early morning I had to peel it off because it was so warm. Looking forward to wearing it below 50 degrees here in Boston.
Excellent garment--wear it to the ranch every morning--10 below to 20 above with a light base layer and Carhart hoody. Needs no lycra to get on, but a heavier person might need a larger size. Love the colors and fits perfectly for work or play. Just bought a second one.
Amazing fleece! It's great to throw on in the chilly mornings, then toss it in your bag when it gets a bit warmer. This is lighter than every other fleece I have seen which makes it a great travel item.

Needed a mid layer with a collar. This fits well. Its the perfect weight for warmer weather and a perfect layer under a shell for not so good weather. I like the articulation
Best fleece I own. Not bulky, fitted length, and warm yet airy. And when it gets a little colder, it functions well as a mid-layer. The only issue is it runs quite tight. I usually wear XS but had to exchange for S
This is the first product of many, many Patagonia products that I found disappointing. My Mountain Hardwear Monkey Mesh Grid finally gave up after 8 years of faithful service - the zip broke - and they no longer make it. This looks like it will be very warm (too early in the season here to know for sure) and the fit is as described = slim. I knew that it didn't have spandex when I ordered it, but I had forgotten how hard things are to get on when there is little stretch. I'll give it five stars, but hope for some spandex in the next version.

Light and warm
I like the fit, it is form fitting, not tight, so if you want something more relaxed look elsewhere or size up.

5ft 7in 155lb athletic, broad shoulders, M is a good fit, its not too long in torso or arms. Tight enough fit but not too tight. Warm and looks decent as well.
Super comfortable material, light in weight and slim fitting as a layer. I also found the collar to be sufficent in protecting the neck under the jacket.
Provides a good deal of warmth while remaining breathable. Purchased for hiking however is tidy enough to use as a daily when the weather's a little cooler.
Fits perfectly:
5'10, 11st, slim/athletic build
I like side-zip chest pockets. They provide a good place to put a cell phone when riding, skiing or running that avoid annoying phone bounce and leg bump. The pocket on this jacket is a bit too small to easily stash or use a small iPhone. Another 1/2 or 3/4 of depth would do the trick.
Great fleece - very comfortable band kept me very warm this winter whether I was skiing. Snowshoeing or fat biking. In my opinion it is a bit warmer then the R1 pullover and is a little thicker but overall happy with my purchase. Patagonia thanks for the inclusive sizing it is greatly appreciated and please keep it up!
This thing is a grade eh beaut. Cant beat the R1's soft cozy feel, perfect for hanging around the house in, but also packs super small so I can fit it in my fishing bag for those 'do I need another layer?' days.
Really love this piece. I have been a fan of R1s for over 20 years and this piece doesn't disappoint. Lightweight and breaths well. Throw a shell over this and it becomes a furnace. Such a versatile piece.
As billed, this jacket performs well in cold weather, high output activities. The "Z" pattern in the fleece breathes nicely yet keeps a good level of warmth. I often straddle the Medium/Large sizes in Patagonia, went with the Large and that left enough room for a midweight top underneath.
