Quality Duffel Bag
I was just looking for a simple duffel bag for all around use. This one seems good quality though Ive only used it once. The zipper feels durable and smooth. The material of the bag is tough and the handles are comfortable. The bag comes with two long straps which can act as backpack straps, but there is no traditional shoulder strap included which... Read More would have been nice. My only real complaint is the storability. The bag comes neatly packed into itself using one of the pockets as a storage pouch. It was very difficult to remove due to the rigid nature of the bag material. I have no idea how to go about getting back in that pocket.
Hey Brett, thanks for the review, we appreciate your feedback. We're happy to help you with the process of getting the bag back into its pocket; please reach out to [customer service](https://help.patagonia.com/s/?_gl=1*jvq3w8*_ga*MTE3MzgxOTU4OS4xNjQ3NTMxMTc0*_ga_1SYPSJZYJ5*MTY3NTcyNjQ4NC41MDEuMC4xNjc1NzI2NDg0LjAuMC4w) for further detail. First, we remove the backpack straps and unzip the front pocket from both ends, while also unzipping the top of the bag. Next, we tuck the backpack straps to the side of the duffel opposite the front pocket, and fold the sides downward, while tucking in the top flap into the bag. From there, we flip the bag so the bottom is upwards and button up the handles together across the bottom. Then, you'll want to fold the bag into thirds, and then fold that in half once more. At that point you can begin to push the bag into the pocket by going one side at a time. We realize the process is a bit complicated typed out, so we encourage you to reach out to us so we could send some pictures along with instruction.
Beautiful color, nice and big
I purchased the wax red color, which is a beautiful red color. I have the matching backpack. I purchased the 70L as a family duffle bag that can be carried on my back to free up my hands. I expected a big package with my duffel bag to arrive and was surprised to see a small box. Then I remembered the photo which showed that you can fold it into a small bag. I like the option that you can fold it that small because I sometimes only need one bag on one way of a trip but two on the other. Super sturdy and functional. Black Hole Bag saved my holiday!!
I was recently flying home for the holidays. I had just received this Black Hole Bag and had it packed with lots of holiday goodies. Well...the airline lost my bag. I was certain that I would never see it again. Fortunately, they did find it. Unfortunately, it was covered in black grease and diesel fuel. I thought everything inside would be ruined.... The best duffel bags available
I have just bought my 3rd and 4th duffel. I have been using the 40L and the 55L for about 3 months and I suspect others are reading through wondering what size they need. I only use them for work travel, so no heavy clothing (yet) or gear etc. I also don't use packing cubes as I would with a backpack, but I still fold/roll carefully. I've... Read More found as a single man with an average amount of toiletries and electronics the 40L is great for up to 4 days and the 55L is great for a week. I have bought a second 55L to use for skiing and a 70L for trips >1 week. These are amazing bags that seem extraordinarily durable even after many car/airplane trips in a compressed period of time. They have internal structure, which to me makes them easier to pack & then open & live out of than Patagonias bean-based competitors bags with a similar reputation for durability. My only gripe is that I wish there was the option to use a traditional shoulder sling.
An updated classic
My second time to purchase of this bag brought me a good surprise. Truly a black hole
70l black hole bag is exactly what you think it is. A well made, durable black hole. Water resistance coating really beefs up the outer protection. The bag has enough room to fit multiple shoes, all your casual clothes as well as some of my cycling or hiking gear making it the perfect bag for medium to long getaways.
Amazing ability to carry so much!
Our family have been "black hole" Patagonia users for many years. I finally caved and got the 70L size (for myself!) for an upcoming trip to Italy. The ease of packing so much, yet being able to use it as a backpack was the determining factor. This bag is tough, roomy and easy to haul for trips everywhere. Can't recommend this bag en... Good Travel Bag
For road trips, this is my go to bag. I pack everything in and throw it in the trunk of my car. It did take a bit of shoving to fit it in the overhead compartment. The only things that was a "me... Read Moreh" was actually wearing it as a backpack. Would not recommend wearing it for an extended period of time as it kind of hurts your shoulders after a while. And also if it's not fully stuffed, everything kind of sags down the bag when wearing it like a backpack. Otherwise, this bag is super durable and excellent quality.
easy to travel with
Was given as a high school graduation gift. The new freshman traveled with 3 weeks of clothes from Connecticut to Texas. Duffel was easy to travel through the airport. Easy to store in his room.

Black Hole Bags - Great for everything!
Our family are huge fans of the Black Hole bags. Amazing for family travel, especially with the backpack straps. Before the full line was available we had The North Face version for our kids. Great concept, but we found very hard to use. Fabric was so stiff, and the zippers impossible to use. We started with a black hole backpack for one of our kid... Read Mores for school which was great (we are big fans of Patagonia and have been for years & years). For Christmas we bought 40 & 55 size for our kids, one going to college which it will be perfect for. We have since gone back to purchase the the fanny pack for dog walks, the 70 for the college child, and to start building a set for ourselves. We live in Colorado and try to get up to the mountains as often as we can, easy to throw in the car and stack. Thank you for great options. Great bags, lightweight, and zippers work fantastic!
Holds a TON, easy to transport
I originally bought this bag because I needed a travel bag that didn't have wheels because many places I went weren't wheely bag friendly (lots of dirt and sand paths or stairs) and was still easy to carry. The convertible backpack straps are a BREEZE to use. Though I will say, they can get a little sore if you wear them for a while (lon... Read Moreg trek up a mountain side or through the airport). This bag has taken a beating throughout the US, Europe, South Africa, Botswana, and my remote field work area in Namibia. I've even used this bag in place of a proper "backpacking" pack for an overnight hike in the Black Forest in Germany. Note for flyers: this is definitely not a carry-on-friendly size, but if you need a few weeks' worths of travel gear or you are bringing larger gear, this bag is your go-to! I highly recommend this bag and am considering getting a smaller size for shorter trips as this (70L) one can be a little awkward to carry when it isn't very full (collapses on itself).
Awesome Bag, larger than expected
Just received my bag in the mail. Very pleased with the quality of it, but was surprised by how large it is (guess they don't call it that black hole for nothing). Was curious is anybody has any experience carrying this on a plane in the overhead compartment. It seems like completely full might be too large?? I have 70L. Thanks !
Hey Greg, thanks for the review. The 70L version of this bag measures in at 28" x 17.5" x 13", so it might be too large to use as a carry on for most airlines. We can confirm that we have been able to use the [Black Hole Duffel Bag 55L](https://www.patagonia.com/product/black-hole-duffel-bag-55-liters/49342.html?dwvar_49342_color=CNY&cgid=luggage-black-hole-bags) which comes in at 26.7" x 15.7" x 11.8", but we can't guarantee that would be the case for all airlines. The Black Hole 40L wheeled duffel or regular duffel versions should be safe bets.
Trying to replace a 90L
It used to be that our two 90L duffels were sufficient for the family to share as needed, but when both of my teens wanted to go on the school trip to Guatemala with me, we needed a third. They both arrived in time, and my husband is glad that he gets one now, too! It did keep me from over-packing, but was very doable. Im definitely glad I splurged on packing cubes. I used one to keep undies and socks from floating around and the other to separate the clothes Id only need in the other location. Very happy with my 70L and actually glad I didnt get the gigunda one! The whole family prefers the backpack option to rolling bags as we are all tall and cant ever seem to control the rollers, and glad we now have 4!
I ordered four of these (one for each member of the family) in different colors. Purchased for daughter who sails year-round and was worried might have ordered too big (ordered 70L). It's actually the perfect size! She can fit her gear in, wear it on her back, sturdy enough to check for flights, and holds all she needs for a weekend! Plus - the red color makes it easy to spot amongst tons of black bags!

Great customer service, but not sure on the bag
I left this bag in my car when hiking in Utah (very hot day) and it melted in the sun. I had left the flap open so it was plastic on plastic, but seems like something that it should hold up in. No fuss on the exchange at the store, but still a bit worried on durability. Let's see how round two goes.
Thank you for the feedback on the bag, PJ! The Black Hole bags are very durable in terms of the fabric's resistance to wear and tear, as well as in hot travel conditions. We would not recommend leaving the bag open and unattended in very high temperatures in a car, rather throw a tarp or blanket over it, or place it in a shady spot if possible. We're glad to hear that the store was able to get you sorted out quickly and painlessly, and we look forward to your review after years of use!

Love that this holds so much and that it has the option to use as a backpack. It’s a little too big as a backpack when full. I wish the straps had more padding and there was a hip belt to shift the weight. But otherwise it’s a solid duffel - love that it collapses to a small pouch.

Great duffel, but lacks security
I'm very satisfied with my new duffel, except for one design flaw. You cannot secure the contents of the bag with TSA approved locks. Please note that the many of the questions in the review don't apply to duffels, so I left them blank.
