Had bought this bag 3 years ago it was great.. was time to get another. This version of the bag was so cheaply made, I couldnt justify keeping it at that price. it was returned.

I travel quite a bit. I am an expert packer. I can roll up clothes and pack 2 shoes and make up for a whole week in one backpack carry on. Great Travel Backpack
This iteration of the Blackhole backpack is great. For me I used this for one bag travel and I think it really excels in this aspect. It is functional, lightweight, and seems to be pretty durable. I have really filled this bag up while traveling and sometimes I need that added support that hip straps provide. The second is to include aqua guard or some type of sealed zipperage. This feature would have truly given it the water resistant edge. Lastly, I think the bag could have been a bit thicker in material to really bombproof it. Maybe a 100d more of material? Those are my only gripes so far but to be honest this is a great bag for the price and will hopefully last me a very long time. I highly recommend this bag for travel.

Super stylish design, highly portable. Perfect for city and hikes. Suggestion for improvement: Rain flaps to cover zippers! After finding it sold out online, I called around, and found ONE in the Meatpacking District shop in NYC, which held it for me until I could pick up. Super friendly and smooth transaction. Paying a premium for such quality is made even better, thanks to Yvon and the company's mission. Great brand and team.
My new favorite back pack
Had a Swiss Gear by Wenger backpack I used for many years for daily commute to/from work as well as any travel (personal or work) as carry on bag for flights. It is now second to my new favorite Patagonia Black Hole 32L pack. During a visit, I borrowed my son's Black Hole pack for a hike up the famous Manitou Incline in Colorado, to carry wate... Very versatile.
Know What Youre Getting
I bough this backpack for school and as a hiking backpack. The quality is great. all of the zippers are nicely put together and the material of the entire backpack is of good quality. Read Morecreated with that intention. There are a total of 5 zippered compartments and only one of which offers SOME organization for small things. If you try hard you could make this into a school backpack but I have found that this is not within it's element. On Patagonia's fault, the laptop compartment zipper just seems poorly thought out. It is a little too hard to access since the shoulder straps are in the way. Some tweaking on Patagonia's behalf could result in a better engineered backpack layout. Overall the backpack is great but I feel like I had the wrong application in mind for this backpack. Patagonia could work on this backpack and truly perfect it.
Aside from looking really cool, the bag is really sturdy. I just got back from a two week trip to Europe and didn't want to check any bags, so this was my sole bag and performed marvelously. Great Travel Bag
This is a great work and travel bag that fits nicely under an airplane seat, even leaving room for feet due to its narrow design. Comfortable with enough pockets and packs well. I got a TON of stuff in this! I Really wish there was a detachable waist strap. Fully loaded this can get a bit heavy and could use weight distributed to lower body.
Thanks for the feedback on adding a waist belt feature, Kathryn!
Beware the new version
What a disappointment! I loved this product so much that I bought a new one, to have for the future. The materials are much cheaper feeling and my arms are sore from wearing the nasty nylon straps.

Good design but very weak buckle clip on shoulder strap
On my first outing the clip on the should strap broke. Causing my pack to fall off my should and damage my computer. No key compartment; water bottle holders loose
It's roomy, attractive, and well made. There are two design flaws: Theres no logical place to put keys. An old backpack had a small pouch just for that. Here they get lost with other stuff. The water bottle holders are loose and theres no way to tighten them. My bottles fall out if I lean over slightly.
I thought, this would be a great replacement for a previous version of the Black Hole backpack. Unfortunately, the design is frustrating and poorly thought out. Great for traveling
I use this for travel when I need to pack a few extra things for the night. In the laptop pocket I can fit my laptop sleeve and a large moleskine planner (I actually use that planner). Cons: Structure There's not a structure that lends itself to the pack being able to stand on its own the way you see in the Paxat or Chacabuco. Although the back pad is well padded, the best way to structure it is to put a laptop sleeve in the back, and the pack will feel a lot sturdier. I've also noticed that the PATAGONIA logo on the front pocket has slowly started to peel off, so it looks like I'm wearing PATAGO, but that's not really an issue. Overall, the 32L is a great addition if you're already into the Black Hole line. I wouldn't wear it for hiking because of the lack of structure, but it's good for traveling to and from domestic places.
Comfiest everyday packpack
Pros: weatherproof (haven't had it in the rain yet, but looks solid), lots of pockets (2 bottle holders!), and most comfortable and secure fit of any pack I've had. (minor)Con: the dark weatherproof material seems to heats up in the sun more than a cloth bag. I wonder if it'll degrade if sun-exposed too much.
I am a fan of the black hole bags. This is my second backpack. With all that being said, this bag has a few things it could improve to be five stars: 1st: please add a bottom strap that can also be removed. Having that option would make it a much better outdoors pack and allow it to be used for more than just chill walks around camp, transitions, and just being a duffle in back pack form 2nd: please consider making the zippers water proof if for no other reason than the feel 3rd: it would be cool if there were another mesh pocket in the main compartment above the current one for some more organizational help 4th: make the tablet pocket in the back sleeve area a little larger 5th: it would be cool if one of the water bottle holders (preferably the left one) had a second Miny mesh pocket inside it (rei style)
Love this bag
Overall, I love this bag. I can stuff a change of gear for working out, water bottle, computer and cords ect, and much more. The 32L is the perfect size for a daily commute. Not as good as the old one
I had the old Black Hole bag for about 8 years and wore it into the ground. Unfortunately I think the design on this one is much worse. My chief complaint is that the laptop compartment is very difficult to access. Why was this put behind the straps? This doesn't make any sense. Also, the new one seems a bit smaller.

Also I can fit my entire sport rack snacks and extra layers for the crag in my pack which is a huge bonus. Thanks Patagonia and keep it up!

Patagonia Black Hole 32L: perfect commuter and day bag
After almost four years of use for train commuting 2-3 times weekly (only for a year before the pandemic), family outings and vacations (about 10 trips), and some business travel, I've concluded that the Patagonia Blackhole 32L backpack is an almost perfect commuter backpack and, because other reviews are terrific, I'm just going to make ... Read Moresome observations that I hope are helpful. The material looks shiny and you'd think it hard, but it actually has a suppleness and yet seems really tough, is water resistant (material itself and not a coating that will come off over time), and wipes off easily. I wanted a flat-backed backpack because I didn't want my computer to be bent over my arched back, especially when on a bike, and I've previously cracked a screen on my laptop when I over stuffed a backpack cinched it down. The laptop pocket is easy to access, but only one side is padded and, in the same compartment, the tablet pocket is really useful and I like that I can lay my backpack across my lap when commuting and can easily and discreetly slip my tablet in and out. There a handle at the top, but there's also a really handy grab handle on the front face of the backpack (like when you slide it under the seat in front of you, you can easily find it and grab it). The front face also has a loop ladder and this a must for me as I use it to lash gear (like when my kids shed their coats and hear). Although it's 32L, it looks deceptively slimmer and seems almost svelte given it's capacity. On the other hand, when I really need to stuff it, it can take a load and I'm always surprised how much it can swallow. The vertical zip map pocket on the front is really useful and, because it's a side access, vertical-zip only, it's flat and discreet. Bottom is tough and has held up beautifully This isn't a technical backpack, but I've used it for travel to a destination and then taken it hiking, and it has worked well (and great that it has a sternum strap, which was another must). My bag is black, but the interior is a nice, light gray, so you get a bit more light and can see deeper into the bag. Looks nice for business-casual look, or in the field, and my daughter has the smaller 25L in bright orange (discontinued) that she uses as her hunting backpack.

Read Moret lost in the void. The front pocket is serviceable albeit tight but just right for its use. The top compartment is stable enough to throw some moderately weighty items in without it slouching, and the top strap on the front is bomber! I didn't realize how nice a strap like that is for handling the bag short distances. But ohhhh the laptop pouch. The main thing I look for in a bag that will hold my computer is how fussy it is to access, and the computer pouch is farrrr too fussy. I understand the idea behind a lay-flat design. But my first issue has been with the airports I frequent still requiring me to remove the laptop and defeating it's inherent purpose. What it has done, however, is introduce a few daily frustrations removing and storing my laptop. Wedged underneath the straps, the pocket is a chore to access from the top due to the straps arching over the zipper. It's not wholly inconvenient, but for accessing the compartment in the day to day, I would rather not wrestle a zipper, strap, and buckle to start work. So I instead started loading my notebook from the side without using the inner sleeve to avoid dealing with the straps every day. Unfortunately, I quickly realized that this part of the pocket does not have a false bottom like the inner sleeve does to protect it from small drops. So after a small dent, I went back to fighting the intended top load design. I feel like the easy fix would be to add a false bottom to the lay-flat pocket as well, giving the user the option with which way to load the laptop and not have to worry about drops. However I am not a bag designer, so this could be a misguided sentiment. Furthermore, the plastic buckle inside the lay-flat sleeve can scratch up the surface of a laptop a bit. In my case it was nothing crazy, just some unsightly marks that only I will probably notice. I realize this buckle is there to use with a water reservoir if necessary which is a nice addition, however Velcro or another soft enclosure is probably not going to mark up any gadget. Everything else about the pack is great. The materials, the fit, and even the water bottle holders are excellent! Unfortunately for me, after a small dent and some smaller marks, the quest for that unicorn backpack will have to continue.

(fast) wasserdichter Allround-Rucksack
Light weight & versatile
Im in love with Patagonia navy bluejust wow! I used the backpack on a recent trip. My complaint about the front pocket is its a side zipper only so its difficult to see inside & easy for things to fall out. Should have 2 zippers that zip up the sides & top.
I mainly use this backpack as an all day commute bag for school or work. A few features are definitely centered more around camping/other recreation activities, but it makes for an incredible school backpack. I can't think of another backpack that is sturdy enough and large enough inside to hold more than 3 full size textbooks along with every... Read Morething else you need for the day without wearing out in a month. The fact that it's fairly waterproof and subtle in design is another plus. I would give this a 4.5/5, but the stars system won't let me go to that level. The only issues I would have with the bag are that it isn't completely waterproof and that the front daisy chains don't seem to provide any utility since I don't camp/hike. If they cut the amount of daisy chains in half and had larger loops, I could use them to hang equipment from. I can easily see myself using this bag for the next 10 years if it lasts me that long(and I'm confident it will).
Large bag, disappointed with design
I used to have the 25L bag which I owned for a long time. This bag definitely holds more. But Im pretty disappointed the straps just flail about. My old bag had built in strap holders that matched the color of the fabric. Im not sure why these are absent from a more expensive backpack. Also really miss that center strap on the face of the bag. Hey Joel, thanks for the review on our Black Hole Pack 32L. This particular bag does have more streamlined features, but the added cost goes to the extra space and material needed to make it 7L bigger. We'll be sure to pass your thoughts along to the appropriate team members. We don't want you disappointed with your purchase, so feel free to [send it back to us](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html).
Great pack with 2 exceptions
I love my new Black Hole backpack. I am a healthcare provider working in a mobile unit, and it holds all of my equipment, a change of scrubs, and keeps my iPad anc laptop (16in MacBook Pro) dry. (I was impressed both fit even with their cases.) Another plus- I can easily wipe it down after a particularly virulent day at work. I wish it had 2 things... Great Bag, Solid Construction and Cavernous
Put a few miles on it and so far it's a solid performer. Wide open inside with plenty of room for boots, shoes, and a couple changes of clothes. Gorgeous but top heavy
I really wanted to love this bag. There are so many amazing features, the material, space, storage, but unfortunately theres one thing that drives me nuts about this bag. It is very top heavy. Hi Cristina, we're sorry to hear that the weight of the Black Hole Pack wasn't what you were expecting. We do have a lighter version of the Black Hole, the Ultralight Black Hole® Tote Pack 27L, https://www.patagonia.com/reviews/view-all-reviews/?productid=48809. Though this pack is smaller, it will sit up when packed and works as a tote. It might be just what you're looking for.
Deceptively big yet portable because it's thin and hugs my back. Definitely nice knowing its water resistant for camera gear.
We appreciate this great feedback on the design, sizing, fit and performance of our 32L bag, John! Please note that you will want to add a waterproof bag inside to truly protect your camera equipment, as the Black Hole fabric is resistant to moisture, but water can definitely get into the bag through seams and zippers quite easily.
Perfect for a rainy trip.
I Purchased this pack for my trip to Iceland. The waterproof aspects and the trim design was perfect for travel in a country known for rain and wind. It accommodates plenty of layers and a hearty lunch. For the airplane it fit easily under the seat and the laptop sleeve was very convenient at security. Love it!
Best Backpack Ever!
Best Backpack on the market for school, work, and my personal favorite; travel! Really great product all around. Love the laptop and tablet zippered pocket. Only reason I didnt give it 5/5 stars was because when wearing it, at the very top of the bag it seems to pick into the back of my neck a bit. Its not uncomfortable but just an awkward feeling.... Best back pack for commute.
Brought this bag because my 15 year old northface started losing its water resistance and it was difficult to carry my water bottle, lunch, umbrella, small screw driver set, and if i wanted to carry anything else it made it very uncomfortable and hard to pack. Smart phones are becoming more water resistant but paper is not and I still carry papers and a laptop computer al the time. Great bag on your back
I personally love the bag. I like the way it sits on my back and I love the commuter style of the pocket design. Color design is great and like people say the material is thinner than it used to be, but I believe Patagonia wouldnt sacrifice durability to cut corners. I assume they just made a better material. What I would want this bag to have ... Read MoreThicker bottom so it stands on its own. Straps for the water bottle pockets to make them secure. (Its smarter to use them as small item pockets and to use rope and carabiners to secure them to the back currently) This one is the biggest for me but detachable hip straps. Or at least the ability to add them if you wanted with sewn in loops. It would be a 10/10 all around with that addition becoming a perfect commuter, travel, and day pack. I emailed worn wear since I live very far from any Patagonia store to see if they would be interested in doing any of these modifications to my bag but I havent heard back yet. Either way Im excited to have this bag for years to come. People dont often sell them after market on sites and I think that speaks to longevity and strong preference to these bags. Excited to see where it takes me!
Best Bag For Your Buck

Great bag and versatile
I use this pack a lot even though I haven't had it long yet. It fits my macbook air and iPad pro in the sleeve area and has room for tons of other stuff in the other zippered areas. I like the daisy chain on the back, that will be useful for many things as well. I look forward to the many adventures to come with this pack.
My new favorite travel pack
This pack is awesome. I recently took it on our spring break trip. The laptop/tablet sleeve was super easy through security and felt secure for my device. I love the entry for the main packet and the other pockets are super functional. My travel companion wants one too.
Great bag, terrible zippers
The shape and functionality of the bag are almost perfect. The zippers are bafflingly cheap and disappointing.

So this bag is great. I mainly use it for school but am confident in wearing it in numerous activities. I got the 32L and it has more than enough space. Good bag, a little over priced
I like this bag. Its big enough for what I need without being to big. My only knocks are that the laptop compartment is kind of clunky with the straps in the way of the zipper. Also, the big is really expensive. However, all the Patagonia bags I have owned have lasted forever so you get what you pay for.
Better with a couple modifications.
Lots of folks reviewed this pack describing the difficulty of getting to the laptop compartment--which made me a bit hesitant. But then I discovered that you can slide both zippers to the side and access from either side--and you only need top access if you're clipping your laptop inside the inner sleeve, which you only really need for TSA or ... Read Morea little extra protection. This made a huge difference in terms of convenience. And I agree with what folks wrote in regards to the mesh pockets...they stretch out easily and end up baggy. Bring back the old pockets! And not including compression straps to hold fast water bottles or a coffee thermos? Ask anyone and they'd tell you that's a hugely important feature. I asked the gear folks at my local Patagonia store and they helped me rig a compression strap between the lower part of the main straps and the daisy-chain loops on the front of the pack. Thanks guys! This has worked pretty well, but I hope it will be standard issue on the next version. Thanks as always for the great and sustainable products!
New back panel a step down from previous design
I primarily use this pack for work travel (with a laptop computer) and (more frequently) for day trips with my two young daughters. During day trips I tend to carry full water bottles in the pockets and a few layers and food in the main compartment, but I only fill the main compartment with gear when I'm traveling for more than a few days. I ... Read Morehad a previous generation of Black Hole pack in the next size down, 25L or so. That pack had a one-piece water resistant back panel as found on many alpine-style packs, which was slightly less breathable but far more comfortable and functional overall than the current design. This generation uses a two-piece back panel with foam and mesh panels against the thoracic and lumbar areas, separated by a horizontal flex panel at the bottom of the shoulder blades. I was very excited about this at first as it appeared much more comfortable for warm weather, but over time the flex panel has become too pliable and the pack now sags and folds against my back unless it is fully and carefully loaded. Carrying anything dense (e.g. full water bottle) without fully loading the back is quite uncomfortable and has me constantly adjusting the shoulder straps trying to find a good fit. As mentioned in some other reviews, the laptop compartment is a vertical pocket right against the back panel, and it is difficult to access without moving the shoulder straps out of the way. It has a zipper closure around the perimeter of the back panel and I have to be very careful about where I place the zipper pulls during longer walks or else I get pretty bad chafing against my back. The side pockets are made from a stretch mesh fabric which starts to sag and wear out from abrasion pretty quickly if you regularly carry rigid items in the pockets. In my experience this is a common issue with side pockets like this, but Patagonia has released some styles of pack in the past with side pockets constructed mostly of more durable fabric and small mesh inserts for stretch and draining. I liked that design much better. I will say that the feature set for this pack is spot-on, and was the reason that I selected this style in the first place, although I typically favor smaller packs: - The black hole fabric is fantastically durable and weather-resistant as its reputation suggests. It also manages to be quite beautiful. - The pocket configuration provides lots of organization opportunities, which I always want in a pack sized for travel or family outings. - The grab/haul handle on the main body of the pack is horizontally oriented and larger than the handle on the smaller styles of this pack, and I find it to be infinitely more useful. - Despite shortcomings of the laptop compartment design, it is very easy to access and it shines in the context of airport security checks, as intended. If another generation of this pack came out with a single piece back panel, a laptop compartment moved to the other side of the shoulder straps, more durable side pockets, and a horizontal grab handle, I'd buy several and use them forever. In the meantime, I will continue to use this one despite its limitations.
Thank you so much for the thorough feedback on your pack. We'll forward your concerns to our design team.
