I love these shorts, i have several pair and i wear them daily. They fit great, are comfortable and very well made. If there were a nested shallow pocket in addition to the deep one that would solve the issue.
These are the most comfortable and durable shorts I have ever owned. I prefer longer shorts and these go to just above my knees. Great quality, they are nice and thick and should last a very long time. I may buy another pair in the other color.
I am short with heavy muscular legs yet these pants had enough material below the waist to make another pair. I returned them to the local store and the 34 inch was tight in the waist but the rest of the pant fit extremely well. I use to only buy Patagonia but you no longer make clothes that fit my body type. Disappointing!

Ottima robustezza e vestibilità. Anche in giornate calorose mantengono la freschezza.
This is my first pair of hemp shorts from Patagonia. That being said, I have been wearing the Stand-Up shorts since the early days and have managed to get many, many years out of the standard duck canvas. These are Heavy Duty! Over 40 years of satisfaction for me and will continue to recommend in the future!
Best shorts I’ve had in a long time. Comfy from the get go and the sizing is bang on.
The only niggle would be that if anything the top pockets are too deep as my wrist watch catches on the top of the pocket before my fingers reach the bottom of the pocket.
Hey Joe, we're sorry these didn't work out. These shorts are made for work wear endeavors, not the alpine per se; just a small detail we wanted to point out! You can check out our other short options [here](https://www.patagonia.com/shop/mens-shorts).

Strange Fabric
Unbelievably heavy. Odd fabric, I describe it as a cross between homespun and an upholstery fabric.
Definitely wouldn't work for hiking or running.
Hi Darlene! Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. We're sorry to hear about the disapointment with the shorts. These are designed as work shorts so they're built for durability. If you're interested in a hiking short we'd recommend taking a look at our [Men's Outdoor Everyday Shorts](https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-outdoor-everyday-shorts-7-inch/57436.html?dwvar_57436_color=SKA).

My new go to shorts.
I lived my life in baggies, now I am seriously retired but still spent a lot of time outside. Did not know that these were what I needed. Two of my former canyon buddies also bought a pair. Hate when they are in laundry cycle-might have to use a gift card for a second pair.
Hemp is the way to go! These are very comfortable and hardy shorts. I love the deep pockets compared to the shallow ones on other brands. At first I questioned that lack of snaps, buttons or velcro closure for the cargo pockets, but I have yet to make a final decision. So if you are considering these shorts, I suggest buying them. I Especially appr... Read Moreeciate the roomy fit. I dislike the tight (i.e., modern) fit. Let me breathe!
I wear these shorts for hiking while the weather is warm, about 8 months per year here in So. California. They are perfect for hiking with my dog, as I carry a lot of junk and I don't like packs unless absolutely necessary. Read Mores in the cargo pockets and the long pockets keep things in the main front pockets. They may not a sleek and stylish, but I don't care since I'm 70 and I want things to work above everything else. I just hope Patagonia keeps making them, and the pants too. I've been a Patagonia customer for about 45 years and have continued to be amazed at the quality of all their products.
I cant say enough good things about these shorts. They wear like iron but are soft enough to have on all the time. I only wish they came in more colors. Actually the whole workwear line is great. Maybe I should be on the pro care program?
Got these for my hubby after a recommendation and they live up to their rave reviews. He loves the fit, super sturdy material and loves the deep pockets, the stuff he keeps in them is astounding!! He uses them for work, home and hiking.
So I ordered him the other color and pants for Xmas.
I have been wearing Patagonia for decades and like so many of their products I feel these will last for years of use while being comfortable the whole time
These are heavy, like so heavy they get hot in the summer and tend to fall off me. Also, the sizing is generous. I measure about 2" larger than the size I'm wearing and they're still a bit big.
The pockets are enormous, but the flaps could really use some form of button or snap.
Miss your JNCO jeans? The fit of these shorts will cure your nostalgia. The waist is true to size but the rest will have you looking for your Limp Bizkit CD and old Sony Walkman. Still the superb quality materials expected from Patagonia! Little baggy but still great shorts
Very fine fit, of very high quality. I found the ordering process to be simple, delivery was on time and the quality of the two pairs of shorts are excellent. I like the piping that adds to the beauty and style of the shorts, I would certainly recommend Patagonia to others.
Very happy with the product. I think one of Patagonia's successes. The usual Patagonia quality and attention to detail throughout. I especially like the fabric - thick and durable yet soft and supple.
I garden professionally and as a hobby. My favorite go-to wear is cargo shorts. Ive tried many brands and was pleasantly surprised by the Iron Forge Hemp Canvas Cargo shorts. The cloth these shorts are made from is incredible! Unfortunately, the overall effect is marred by a few design defects:
1) you need to offer them in 9 inseam
2) the front pockets are 6 too deep
3) you need flaps on rear pockets
4) you need Velcro on all pocket flaps

Heavy duty material
The cloth is 12.9 oz and offers good protection. Pockets are solid and deep which keeps a wallet and car keys safe. Side pocket flaps are long and thick and so stay flat after washings leaving no need to iron. The fit in the legs looks good, not baggy and not too tight.
For a man who is doing real work but still wanting something clean looking, these are it. Gussited crotch keeps you comfortable when squatting and driving. Tough material holds up to the abuse of chores, kids, and does not stain easy. Overall great deal!
Great product..started with the pants..2 pair! Rugged yet have good feel. Now Im into the shortstrue fit and the giant pockets keep from running back to the truck/shop for tools.More colors!!
Ive had these for a few years and they are always my go to shorts. They are comfortable and durable. They look good both casual and with a nicer button down shirt. love the sturdiness feel of the work wear cargos! the deep pockets are perfect for tool carry and use and I don't worry about them wearing holes in them due to tool carry. great for work if a rugged work short is needed
I really appreciate the quality of the Patagonia products. These shorts are a good example of what I call old school craftsmanship. Not many clothing manufacturers still make clothes that last, cheers to Patagonia!!
These were the exact shorts I was looking for for casual wear and especially hiking. Super comfortable, nice deep pockets at the waist level. Useful cargo pockets but would not mind a button to secure the flap. The construction seems very durable- and I expect them to last a long time.
Been wearing two pairs of these shorts through the pandemic. They fit just a little loose/large, but that's how I like it. Great dog-walking shorts.
Drawback: Why does Patagonia always foist either funky colors or limited selection of colors on customers?
I am not the world's biggest fan of cargo shorts, but I wanted something on the longer side, so these work great. they are comfortable, and you can easily wear them all day.
Fabric material feels tough, fit is good. Interior of pockets for too wimpy for tools, knives or hardware. Belt loops are lacking in numbers, strength, width and support. Overall, perfect shorts if you want to look like you work, not so great if you actually do work.
Hi Rob, thank you for the feedback and we are sorry to hear that these didn't work well for you. We appreciate your feedback. We guarantee everything we make so please feel feel free to [return](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html) this.

GREAT! (Improve front pockets. All season weight?)
Agreeing with all reviews that call out the front pockets as small. My watch hangs up every time, and they are too narrow at the opening.
I would also love to see these in the all season weight hemp fabric.
Otherwise these are GREAT if kinda small in the waist - just an inch or so.
Overall I love these shorts. They felt heavy from the start but were just fine working out in 90+ degree heat. All the pockets are great to have when working but the front pocket holes could be much bigger. You need small hands to comfortable get things in and out of the front pockets which made wearing these a nuisance over my other shorts.
Really comfortable - seem very well made. Pockets are a little deep. Like the jackets from the same material they seem like they will be quite durable in the long run.
I really like the shorts. Needed a size 34, was not in stock so ordered 33. Did not work, so returned.
Waiting for 34s to show up. Great product, great company!
love these shorts, feel like they'll last forever. however, I think they're heavier than they need to be. I find the pair of cargo pockets to be overkill, unnecessary. My advice - make a workwear version of your old tenpenny design. Skip the cargo pockets, put a slash pocket along right leg for a phone. I'll buy a bunch of these!
This is the second pair of hemp shorts I have purchased from Patagonia. I love them! They are comfortable and very durable. The pockets are deep, the belt loops work well. They will last for many years. Thanks
Indestructible, yet very soft! Does need a coin pocket, somewhere...other than that...I love these shorts and they need to make MORE colors, so I can buy them all!
Bomb-proof! Not only tough but perfect for when the temperatures fall. Perfect for anything around the garage, barn or campsite. Mild break in period but as always- worth it!
I just bought a second pair after a year and a half of having the first pair......the first ones are still in great shape, but I find myself constantly reaching for these all summer and being bummed when I have to wear a different pair of shorts while these are in the wash.
Coming across Patagonia, I started to read more about the company. Really impressed with their mission, vision, and goals. I do wish that there were more colors to choose from. But overall, a very solid product!!!
This is the second pair I purchased.A little pricey for work but will last forever so totally worth it . Theres nothing that compares to the durability
Material is very heavy and seems like it would be hot in warm weather. Pocket flaps seem huge, heavy, and in the way. All in all I would have liked them to fit slimmer.
I am hard on work clothes. Gardening is my free time consumer. These are the best work shorts I have owned. I am 6' and wish these were offered in a 10" inseam version
Great cargo shorts; iron forge fabric is heavy and abrasion resistant as you would expect; the cut is full. It appears they will not shrink in the wash. Use for just about anything! Very happy with these shorts.
Like these a lot, haven't taken them off since they came except to throw them in the wash. Run a little big, thought I'd be a 35 waist, which they unfortunately don't make , but lucky for me the 34s fit great, no need for a belt. Thanks for putting them on sale at the end of the season, being a blue collar guy I appreciate that! Love all my patagonia stuff cuz it's so well made, keep it up.
Great shorts a little long for me but not bad enough to keep me from wearing. Pockets are great plenty deep . A 1/2 liter water bottle fits easily in lower pockets. Would like different color selection.
I bought some of these shorts at an outlet, and they felt really heavy, but once you put them on, I fell in love with them. They have extremely tough fabric (both the pants and shorts) I own two pairs of pants, and two pairs of shorts. My absolute favorite. I get bummed when I have to wear anything else
My husband wears Patagonia everything! Hes been wearing these and the other pair I got him since he opened the shipping box. Thank you for such amazing quality. Hes a happy guy!
I love the fact Patagonia offers inch increments for waist sizes. I detest belts and am an odd number sized person. The fit and the fabric are just what I hoped for. The pocket flaps having no Velcro or other fasteners is great, the flap keeps the stuff in and the debris out. I will be buying more of these.
I bought this for the super durability. I have a pair of the Iron Forge Pants that I use for tree climbing with topping trees on my property. The Iron Forge material wears much better that canvas duck.
These would get a 5 star rating, but the front pockets are so deep, I feel like the bottom of the pocket is near my knee! This is a terrible design. Other than that, I love the shorts.
The material is a bit heavier than I was expecting. I imagine I will recycle them before they wear out...they''re tough. More of a work short, too heavy for extended hiking.
These shorts are great. Deep front pockets to keep things from falling out. Side pockets perfect for dropping the tool in for quick retrieval. Back pockets for those tweener items that you need before you sit down. These shorts are meant to be worn and used just like the Workwear line.
I absolutely love these shorts. Their quality is exceptional. They are heavy, but once theyre on it feels just like a sturdy pair of casual work shorts and you forget about the weight. These are my go to shorts for all outdoor work pursuits. Long enough to protect thighs and short enough not to bind up while kneeling. Tough fabric Has proven & insures that I will be getting many days out of these shorts. I tuck the side pocket flaps into the pockets for the ease of multiple access moments.
I love the feel, look and weight. Wish they were a tad shorter in the leg but overall a great pair of shorts. I disagree with the pockets being too deep, I think they are just right!
These are the heaviest shorts I have ever seen. I'm sure they will be with me for many years. Love the dark ash color. Pockets are deep and strong. I might like snaps or buttons on the cargo side pocket flaps, there are no fasteners.

First feel, these are heavyweight, really solid fabric. You probably won't be wearing them in hot weather. Hopefully you have more technical gear as this is utilitarian through and through. I like the fabric and think the blend will hold up no matter what. The main reason I bought these shorts was their fabric and fair trade workmanship, and the front pocket issue definitely doesn't override those benefits.
These cargo shorts are a nice color and feel durable yet comfortable. They fit great, and the pockets are crazy deep! Lots of room for storage, the pockets literally go probably twice as deep as my other cargo shorts.
Love them, hard to find toughness with worn in feel first time out. I have the work pants that ran a little small these are more in line with true to size fit
I am impressed with these shorts. Tough, comfortable and feel like they will be around a while. My only complaint is they are a little hot for the hot humid Virginia summer we have had this year.
I’ve been buying Patagonia gear for years, so it’s a brand I really trust. I work for a roofing company and these shorts are great! Okay,I like my hemp jacket from Patagonia but I think the really clever idea was in making cargo shorts out of this blend. It makes for cargo shorts that aren't baggy and terrible. I love these shorts. I think they will only get better with age. Other than the cons listed,I think these will be my go to cargo shorts for years to come, maybe decades, considering how burly these are...
Fitment note: I do think the shorts fit on the baggie and long side, especially for Patagonia but the waist runs slightly small/ tight,in my opinion. I wear a 32 easy in the Patagonia board shorts but I ordered these in 33 and I am glad I did. Definitely not too loose in the waist. They hit slightly below the knee in length.
