I've had a size small fitz roy parka for several years, but after putting on a few extra lbs I was no longer to effectively layer underneath it, but before I could buy a medium Grade VII, Patagonia got rid of both the G7 and the Fitz Roy Parka, and in doing so made something that is too generic for serious alpinists/mountaineers. While the alp... Read Moreloft supposedly has nearly as much down as the old G7, I don't find it any warmer than my fitz roy and it seems less lofty. They additionally cheaped out on a few areas, got rid of the mesh internal pockets (you need mesh to help dry wet gloves/other clothing), and it seems like the sleeve rollup system doesn't work as well as some of their other items.
It's clear what they're trying to do: put out updated versions of the G7 and the fitz roy at more accessible price points. That's fine for people looking for Canada Goose alternatives, but these are supposed to be serious products for serious activities. At the very least I'd recommend that Patagonia's product designers look at putting a few extra bucks into the items I noted above, or ideally bring back the old fitz roy parka and the G7. You're never going to get rich off of ultra warm specialty down jackets (unless you're Canada Goose I guess), so you nail the last 10% of little details and charge an extra 50-100 bucks.

Good Idea, too generic
This parka is a great idea and I do like mine which I wear to and from skiing, winter camping and everyday when I want the cozy feel of a sleeping bag when I'm out in the elements. The design and description fall short in setting the expectation of a very pricey piece of gear. It should be designed in men's and women's and the sizing... Read More should find commonality with the rest of the Patagonia lineup, or the uniquely oversized fit of this piece should be fully explained in the description. I normally wear Large but was swimming in the Large Alploft and had to order a Medium. Perhaps if this was offered in a men's and women's version it could be refit as a more technical/performance piece, which could reduce some of the bulkiness.
It's a good jacket but would benefit from a couple tweaks: Metal zipper sliders on main zipper, full zipper sliders with pulls on exterior pockets (not just tie on pulls which could come off), slightly beefier zippers all around, slightly larger pockets with mesh bottoms, and maybe 2-3cm more roomier width. I'm 5'9" and a small ... Read Morefits well mostly but is a little tighter through the torso than I expected. Design is very nice and I like the two tone blocking but I'd like to see darker colors too. Also, the main seams across the front can make the baffles look different sized. This may be jacket size dependent but nonetheless gives the jackets an inconsistent look from one to another. Haven't had a chance to test warmth against my G7 but seems like it would be comparable or close to it. Nylon materials are very nice, seem durable, and I prefer them to the G7. Overall a nice jacket that seems like it was slightly dumbed down to meet the accounting department's metrics. With just a few changes it could be a great parka. I'd pay more for that version.
Unfortunately I did not get to wear this jacket out in severely frigid conditions to be able to atest to it's warmth but I believe the AlpLoft should keep you warm in temps down to the teens and single digits with the right gear underneath.
What I can speak on is the jackets design, feature implementation and simplicity.
The stitchless face... Read More fabric with no stitch holes creates a windproof and highly water resistant barrier.
Storage is another plus. 2 chest, 2 hand warmer and 2 drop-in pockets allow you to store any and everything you like.
Wrist cuffs were snug against the wrists. The hem drawcord which is raised and out of the way is neat, efficient and simple to adjust. The cord lock is embedded and raised to be out of the way and easy to use.
Lastly is the well designed hood. The single pull drawcord cinches in the right place and evenly around the circumference of your head and face.
Fit is generous without being excessive which is harder to accomplish than people think. Patagonia did a really good job with keeping this jacket light and straight to the point.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a cold weather parka.
Thankfully I was lucky enough to see and test the Grade VII Parka last year so you know I had to pick this up. For now the AlpLoft is it's sucessor. (no offense please bring back the Grade VII)
If you can get past the colors you will see that you have a nicely appointed cold weather jacket. It's been unseasonably warm so I did not get a... Read More chance to test the jacket in really cold weather.
I greatly appreciated the fit which wasn't too baggy or excessive. It was comfortable and roomy for layering. The "kiss baffles" on each side of the front zipper adds to the comfort and helps block wind from entering the jacket when it's unzipped.
Hand pockets are roomy and set back a bit. Wish they were positioned forward a few inches so you don't have to reach back to put your hands in.
Collar and chin area are roomy when zipped up and the single-pull adjustment on the rear of the hood cinch the hood down cleanly and evenly over the head and around the circumference of the face.
One of my favorite features is the raised imbedded hem drawcord that is anchored on the inside of the jacket. It's so cleanly implemented and easy to adjust you say why can't ALL jackets be this clean and efficient.
Another great feature is no stitching holes on the entire body of the jacket being no stitches holes on the face fabric which greatly improves the outer fabrics wind deflection and heat retention.
Even though I didn't get a chance to test this jacket out in some severe conditions the feel and quality of the jacket as well as the stitch less fabric allow me to believe that this piece can handle severe conditions.
Patagonia please bring back the Grade VII and see which jacket sells out first. I like both versions.
The AlpLoft seems like a streamlined version of the Grade VII.
Almost an Amazing Jacket for me, Could be for you.
I was really excited about this jacket when I first purchased it, however, after wearing it some I've come to find the fit and warmth haven't quite met my expectations. I purchased this jacket for ski mountaineering as a safety layer, something I could ride out a cold night in, and while it is warm, I'm not confident that it would ke... Read Moreep me warm enough while staying stationary in temps less than 10 deg. There seems to be a disproportionate amount of down in the sleeves which make them feel bulky, and not enough in the core.
I'm 5'8 and 145lbs. I originally purchased a medium, which had a baggy fit that I liked but the closure system around the waist (I have a 30 in waist) couldn't securely synch enough to keep the heat in. The size small fits well, though there is still a weird bulge of extra material in the belly that looks like a bit of a ponch, and I wish the jacket was about an inch longer. In future versions of this jacket an improved synch closure system around the waist would be nice. The thin cord doesn't feel substantial enough.
As other reviews have mentioned. The detailing is excellent. The zipper is nice and smooth, the external fabric is water resistant, and the inside lining is silky. This is an excellent jacket with a few small caveats.
This jacket is unisex. I didnt see that anywhere in the description online. I ordered a small and got a mens small. Ive sent it back twice for a smaller size only because it was a gift.
Thank you for this website feedback, Glennis; we are sharing it with the appropriate teams. Unisex sizing is fairly new for us, so we are still working through how best to communicate details on our website. Please reach out to us if we can help with any of these returns!

Top Shelf
Fit and trim on this jacket are very good. I oversized slightly for under layers, but it still fits with just a tee on. Material is tough enough to stand up to a 10 week old gnawing puppy, which probably wasn't tested in the lab. And needless to say it is very, very warm for cold winter weather. Would definitely recommend.
This parka is toasty warm and I wanted something worlds warmer than my down parkas BUT it fits like a sleeping bag and a muumuu made a baby. Not sure if its the unisex sizing (it looked almost as bad on a masc body shape). Planning to return.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review and we are very sorry to hear about the issues that you encountered with the fit of this parka.
