I love the texture on this, very smooth and warm. Great base layer. I wish it was labeled as such. Used it once as a mid layer (tshirt underneath) and immediately put a hole on it. It is super thin and soft, not abrasion resistant though.

Perfect layer for me
I now own five: two light weight and three mid-weight. Outstanding in every way: very comfortable; durable; quick drying; cold water machine washable. Another Patagonia Winner
Truth be told I wear this baselayer golfing. Which I do 300 days a year. In Oregon this garment is the perfect 35-40* rainy baselayer. Its warmer than earlier models but thats fine. For days when I wave a stick in the middle of the river I use the thermal weight. Best company out there. I support Patagonia every chance I get
Turned into everyday wear
Purchased this mid-weight top for cold morning runs and and as a base-layer for cooler hikes/climbs. Turns out its become a standard to wear sweater like over a t-shirt and looks good over a pair of jeans. First one was beginning to show some wear after a couple hard years of trail runs, hikes and multiple days of skiing. Not to mention innumerable... Snags on everything.
Good fit and great base layer, unfortunately the material snags on everything including the layers worn over top. After its first use it looks terrible.
Thank you for your feedback on the Patagonia Men's Capilene Midweight Zip-Neck . We are of course sorry to hear that it did not work out for you. You are always more than welcome to [return](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html) any item that does not work out for you.
Snags easily. Thread pulled out and ruined the shirt visually the first time I wore it. As a bass layer, its still no doubt quite warm. However, the fabric seems just a little bit too sensitive, not durable.
Hi John, thank you for sharing this review. We're sorry to hear that fabric hasn't performed as it should! If you would like to return this shirt we'll be happy to help you [return](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html) it.
The fabric failed on both shirts within two months
I purchased two of these shirts on November 19th and by January 19th (after wearing each shirt about five times), the fabric on both shirts is falling apart on the elbows. I wish I could post photos so you could see! FWIW, I am medium-size male, only wear the shirts while skiing (under a Nano puffy), wash them in cold water and hang to dry. I'... Not typical quality
I bought this shirt for my husband for a winter running layer. The product is called mid weight but it is more light weight than mid weight. It looked good, but after the first wear developed a pull in the material. After the first wash it came out with many more pulls. I love the Patagonia brand and garments usually last forever. One of the Best Baselayers Out There
I started off with the Capilene Midweight Crew and loved it. It performed phenomenally while skiing in all conditions. After a couple years, I decided I wanted a baselayer with a 1/4 zip because the zipper gave me more control over my temperature and I wanted my neck to be covered. I originally bought Smartwool's 250 Merino baselayer because... Read More 1) it seemed more comfortable and 2) it's a much more stylish garment but I find that Patagonia's midweight baselayer is still superior. Although they are boring looking, their baselayers fit snugger, wick moisture better, regulate my body temperature better, and are noticeably less expensive. The thumb loop is an underrated feature too, especially for myself because I have long arms and it helps with coverage on my wrists. My one and only complaint with this garment is that the fit is such that at the bottom of the zipper there is a massive horizontal crease that extends all the way around to my back. It looks weird and feels annoying, but I'm willing to put that aside because the Capilene Midweight material has kept me comfortable in all weather and conditions, and the zip-neck version generally made it even better.
I bought this one size up so I could layer underneath, Im using it as a mountain bike Jersey great by itself on a cool day, also great with a thermal underneath and a shell over on a cold day. Ripped after the second wash
First of all, I love Patagonia as a brand. I've purchased many of their lines of clothing and have been very satisfied. Hey Mark! Thanks for taking the time to write a product review and we're very sorry to hear about this issue. It sounds like you are caring for your Capilene Midweight Zip-Neck properly by washing it in warm water and tumble drying it on low heat. Regardless, this isn't the typical quality we expect from our products, so we are glad you received assistance with this warranty issue.
poor fabric, not waffle weave
i use my current 2 (purchased in 2017 and 2018) to slip over a t shirt if it's chilly. i'm a medium. but this large slips easily over my 78 yr old shoulders without bunching in the armpits. my current capilenes have a waffle weave interior to the fabric. the 2021 version? the fabric is junk. i didn't even try it on. just returned it.... Thin Material (lightweight, not midweight) & Tight Fit
Quality is excellent, as always with Patagonia clothing. But guys, you're just not consistent. Yeah!!! Sleeves are long enough and the body fits too!
I am 5'11" and finding women's clothes that are long enough is impossible. I end up buying men's long sleeve shirts/coats and men's pants (I have a 36" inseam). Dependable layer for being active
My previous Patagonia MW cap's are old but still work fine. However, they don't have odor control and I wanted one garment to work for a multi-day race without being too stinky. This is exactly what I need. It improves on my older caps by adding thumb loops and a more reinforcement around the collar.
I'm struggling to size things with my latest Patagonia purchases. I recently received a large R1 as a gift and returned it as it was too baggy. So i bought this in a medium to get a trimmer fit and it was too tight under my arms. Not sure what's changed as I didn't use to have this problem.
Hey Tod, we're sorry to hear about the issues you've experienced with sizing. Excellent for Layering
I normally wear a men's size medium, but I ordered a large in this shirt because I wanted to use it primarily as a layering piece. Worn without an outer layer, I was surprised that this medium-weight capilene also blunted a fair amount of wind chill; however, this shirt BREATHES. The outer fabric is smooth, and the loops just inside the sleeve cuffs allow you to slide the sleeves into an outer layer quickly and easily. The long neck zipper makes it easy to take this very lightweight shirt on and off, and the tall collar offers a decent amount of extra coziness from the elements when needed. I now have three and rotate through them almost daily in every season; yes, it's even good for chilly summer nights.
I am reviewing for my husband. He likes the weight of the fabric for layering, a layer underneath and on top if necessary. Great for running, great for casual wear
First off, I don't know what it is, but I love this particular take on the camouflage print. It's a great light-weight option, and, as I found it to run a little small, as a great under-layer. Lastly, this may seem odd to point out, but this is the deepest zipper I have ever seen on anything that could be called a "zip-neck;" this comes in handy when you're getting hot (and as a playful jest to wear it very low out and about with your partner).
Weight of the Mid-Weight
Yes, it is true that the mid-weight is heavier in actual weight than he thermal. That is because the thermal uses a waffle-type weave that traps a lot of insulating air but is very light weight. The mid-weight is more tightly woven and thus weighs more. But they are both great products when used in the right conditions and the mid-weight is as vers... Read Moreatile as it gets. I already own the Light Weight and Thermal Weight base layers from Patagonia. Sometimes I want that in between layer. So I finally purchased this Mid Weight layer. It is well constructed. I bought the midweight zip-neck on sale and wore it for three days of skiing in temps from 26-34F and felt fantastic. I love this sweater!
Despite living in Minnesota, I have never been one to spend a lot on clothing. I am going backpacking for 2 months this spring and decided to treat myself. This updated version is very comfortable! I haven't worn it hiking yet but it was perfect for my run in the 36F temperature coupled with my breathable hard shell.
