Additional Information

When we started making Pataloha™ shirts, we set out to celebrate Hawaiian tradition while reflecting our own diverse and world-traveling experiences. This season’s limited edition Opihi Man print takes its inspiration from Rell Sunn's nickname for Yvon Chouinard; the shirt is made of a soft, airy 60% hemp/35% recycled polyester/5% TENCEL® lyocell blend with a dobby weave for vintage texture.

Featuring our new Opihi Man print, this season’s Limited Edition Pataloha™ Shirt celebrates the affectionate nickname that Rell Sunn gave to our founder, Yvon Chouinard. Opihi Man was a reference to the tasty Hawaiian mollusk they both loved to eat—and to Yvon’s penchant for clinging to steep rocks just as opihi cling to wave-swept shores. Casual enough for all-day wear but dignified enough for family gatherings on the lanai, the shirt is made from soft and airy 60% hemp/35% recycled polyester/5% TENCEL® lyocell fabric with a traditional fit and a dobby stripe across the weft for a vintage effect. A notched collar, single left-chest pocket and polished coconut buttons round out the details; the print is finely matched at the front pocket and placket.

Wrinkle Resistant

TENCEL® is a branded lyocell fiber that comes from the pulp of trees that are grown on sustainably run farms certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

The eucalyptus wood pulp is dissolved in a non-toxic organic solvent. The solution is extruded through fine holes to produce fiber and the solvent is recycled in a closed-loop process – more than 99% of the solvent is recovered and reused. We ensure that the fabric processing of TENCEL® lyocell fiber does not utilize any harmful chemicals (like formaldehyde).

TENCEL® lyocell is a high-tenacity cellulosic fiber, which gives high strength properties to the fabric which can then be used in place of other regenerated cellulose fibers such as viscose rayon.

Hemp

Hemp is an alternative natural fiber that’s cultivated with low impact on the environment. It requires no irrigation, uses no pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, and is harvested and processed by hand. It’s one of the most durable natural fibers on the planet, and results in a fabric with a wonderful drape, comparable to linen.

Unfortunately, industrial hemp is illegal to grow in most parts of the world because government agencies continue to associate it with marijuana. We currently import our high-quality hemp from China, and continue to hope that it might someday grow freely again.

Patagonia makes garments with hemp alone or blended with other fibers like recycled polyester, organic cotton and spandex.
