We set out to make the most durable work pants that would cause the least environmental harm. To get the job done, we started with the original source material for cordage and work cloth: industrial hemp. The durable foundation of the Patagonia Workwear line, our groundbreaking Iron Forge Hemp™ Canvas Double Knee Pants are made from a strong and supple 12.9-oz 55% industrial hemp/27% recycled polyester/18% organic cotton blend that’s 25% more abrasion resistant than conventional cotton duck canvas and needs no break-in. As one of the world’s strongest natural fibers, the hemp content provides superior toughness and durability; the recycled polyester and organic cotton provide a soft hand and allow a tighter weave for increased abrasion resistance. A roomy fit and gusseted crotch offer comfort and range of motion for hard work; the contoured waistband sits comfortably under a toolbelt and has seven belt loops for extra heft if you’re hanging tools off a regular belt; the pants close at the front with a zip fly and top button. Two front drop-in pockets have horizontal gussets that hold a clip knife or tape measure, and the two deep drop-in back pockets serve as a double fabric layer for extra durability. The doubled knees have bottom openings that accommodate knee pads and allow easy cleanout, and the wide pant legs can be worn over boots or tucked into the boot tops in wet conditions. Inseam is 30”. Made with Fair Trade Certified™ sewing.

Organic Cotton

In 1996, with an increased awareness of the dangers of pesticide use and synthetic fertilizers in growing conventional cotton, we began the exclusive use of organically grown cotton in all of our cotton products.

The quality of organic cotton is equal to or better than conventionally grown cotton, yet organically grown methods support biodiversity and healthy ecosystems, improve the quality of soil and often use less water. Growing organically takes more time, requires more knowledge and skill, and, for now, costs more. But it’s worth it.

To ensure we are buying cotton that is organic as defined by the USDA’s National Organic Program, we require numerous certificates issued by an accredited third-party certification body for every step of the supply chain, from farm to factories.

Fair Trade Certified™

We pay a premium for every Fair Trade Certified item that carries our label. That extra money goes directly to the workers at the factory, and they decide how to spend it. The program also promotes worker health and safety and social and environmental compliance, and encourages dialog between workers and management. Fair Trade is one of the first tools we’re using at Patagonia to raise workers’ wages, improve their standard of living and move them closer to earning a living wage.
