Born in Poland’s Tatra Mountains and growing up in the Alps and Himalaya, Marek was destined to be a climber. He found his true passions, solo and big wall climbing, in Yosemite, but he doesn’t just climb big walls. “I move and live there, breathing in the rhythm of the walls,” he says. Fascinated by every aspect of climbing—the intensity of experience, the varied nature living on mountainsides, the challenges, loneliness, friendships and the way people can be overcome by their passion for climbing and adventure—Marek loves the simplicity of life in the mountains. “This is not an escape from ordinary life or sheltering because of fear,” he says. Rather, living a simple life helps him achieve balance, a state that brings him happiness. Marek’s favorite part of climbing is pursuing his ideal of the clean-climbing style (no drilling, no fixing from the ground, no support from other people, etc.), “which I understand as a process, as a road we walk on throughout our climbing life. At the end is the purest style, which seems to be untouchable, but we should do our best—and I do. “
